I had an idea and need some help

With the fact that I'm not getting any Patrick Eaves cards this season and only been buying Blackest Night comics I want to do a card project. So yesterday when I was watching the Senators game I came up with the idea of getting every current Senators player Young Gun or equivalent.

So my big question is how far back do Young Guns go back? and what would the equivalent be for those who don't have a Young Gun?

young guns were first issued in 90-91. i dont think they were SP'd until 98-99 though.

back in the day, Star Rookies were the other main rookie subset.

Maybe you can do a project when Young Guns started to be short printed? So that would take you back to 99/00 I believe.

The Young Guns subset in its current form started with either 00-01 or 99-00, depending on how you look at it. The 00-01 year was the first year that the entire YG set was True-RCs, while the 99-00 set had a number of non-RCs. 98-99 had the analogous "Rookie Star" subset, but only a few of those cards were actually RCs. UD bucked the trend in 02-03 and issued a bunch of second-year cards (not a good move) but since then has only deviated during the lockout year.

As was mentioned, there was an early incarnation back in 90-91 and maybe a couple of the other early 90s sets -- but those were really no different than other base cards from the set, and were not short printed.

I've noticed that the year Alfie was a rookie the Young Guns were in the Collectors Choice set. Pretty funny stuff when I found that out.

I've decided to go after all the players who do have a Young Guns card and then get the best rookies for some players that don't have a YG, like Fisher and Phillips.
