IF Alexis LaFreniere is allowed to be in Series 1, what will be the value of his Young Guns card?

ok people are saying hes 100 percent in series 1....... nothing is gauranteed . training camp injury and bam hes series 2 depending on severity of injury ... it could happen
also season is scheduled to start dec 1, so ud series 1 will be delayed until january or february

unless the rules change that laferniere does not play an nhl game

but i personally think there will be a second wave and may delay the season and production

as for values on his young guns .... it could be worth more than crosby mcdavid mathews etc if ud is limited on making sets and not put out the umpteen amount they do every year because of the possibibility of a shortened year

but if everything is normal then i would say 150=200 out the gate

id like to know how and if billy is guaranteeing this because a lot of people may buy cases to just sit on and resell years later... if hes not is series 1 than there will be a lot of pissed off people that preordered cases on his advice like myself... and dare i say redemption like artifacts
He is going to be in UD1, there’s been all sorts of news about it. It’s everywhere. Yes, an exception to the rule was made, otherwise there’s no way he could be in UD1, like you said.

My prediction is that they’ll use a ‘Draft Day’ type of photo for his Young Guns card.

And then I’d like to see him have an ‘action shot’ Young Guns in Series 2.

“But which one is his REAL rookie card?”, people will ask.

Simple - they both are.

I've had this thought and I really hope Upper Deck does NOT do that and I would be extremely disappointed if that is what happens. It would decrease the demand for both IMO because a lot of people would be confused why there needs to be two versions. I think the correct way of doing it would be have a YG in UD1 with a unique photo embracing the situation and then feature a stunning action photo on his YG Canvas in UD2.

If there are two normal YGs, I see one of two things happening:
1) People gobble up the UD1 version for a high price. Once UD2 comes out, the value and demand for that UD1 card drops substantially because it does not have an NHL game action photo.
2) The UD2 version is released and people have little interest in it since it's basically just an update card.

I 100% agree with Aaron's thought above. Lafreniere NEEDS to have a YG in UD1 to drive that product, period. Could it still be a solid and worthwhile product without? Yes, of course, but the first overall draft pick, especially one of Lafreniere's talent, is a must-have for the product.

I don't want to spoil the episode, but Aaron and I talked about this exact topic in depth on Center Ice Card Cast. The episode will hopefully come out in the next day or two. I'd strongly encourage everyone part of this thread and interested in the topic to give it a listen.

Billy, I know you're seeing this, so do the right thing! UD1 YG embracing the situation (do something unique with it) and let it be. No one needs two different YGs. ;) Haha

His YG need to be an action shot IMO. Even if it means UD flying out to his local barn right after the draft and getting him to skate around in circles with Rangers gear on for a few pictures. Then they can both get him pictured on the ice for the YG and also use the jersey(s) for player-worn memorabilia cards.

Again, don't want to ruin too much of our Center Ice Card Cast episode, but I really hope this is not what happens even though I can 100% see this being what does happen. I think it would be a missed opportunity to do something unique. Rookie photo shoot photos are a big turn off to me because 99% of the time, it's obvious they are not game photos. To me, that actually hurts the collectibility of the card. I fully see what you're saying about the memorabilia component, and that's an excellent point. At the same time, with the lingo UD uses now, there's nothing stopping them rom mailing Lafreniere 50 Rangers jerseys, having him put each on for five seconds, and mailing them back. Still "player-worn" even if not worn on the ice.

To be honest, I'd rather a draft day shot than an action shot in a random rink. Some of the YG in the past have been in a practice rink or from an exhibition/preseason game not at an NHL arena and it looks pretty bad and amateurish. Reminds me of a lot of the football/baseball college rookies where they're basically in practice get ups.

Yeap. Personally, I love the Patrice Bergeron Young Guns. Doesn’t need to be an action shot to make it a nice card!

I'm not sure where you're sourcing your info but Byfield and Stutzle are also being talked about as future elite players. This draft has been talked about for a few years now at being one of the best from the last decade.

Looking at the last 10 1st overall picks, I think he's got more potential than 7 of them:

Jack Hughes
Rasmus Dahlin
Nico Hischier
Aaron Ekblad
Nail Yakupov
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
and likely Taylor Hall

Well I hope he is better then the guys listed because that group is not impressive. Best player is Hall, who is great, but is a 70 point player and has little hobby impact. RNH is a 2 C, Yak is out of the league, Ekblad can’t defend, Hischier and Huges TBD but have started slow.

Dahlin is a stud.

So thats kind of my point, going 1, lighting up the Q etc is not a lock to be a star.

But I think we may have a different idea on what elite means. I have him as a 70 point winger fwiw. I think he will be a great player but I don’t see 100+ points / 50 goals. Elite to me is being a consistent top 20/ 25 player. Crosby, Price, Malkin, Hedman, McDavid, Panarin, Weber, Jones, Josi, etc.

I think he going to be a superstar and have immediate impact on the game. Maybe not Mcdavid or Crosby level but close. Will him being a winger hold back his value.

I say $200 out of the gate. I noticed his Team Canada Autos are going for crazy money right now.

The hockey analysts are comparing him to Brad Richards. Same junior league and same Rimouski team, and Richards has 186 points in 63 games (actually more points than LaFreniere)

I haven't follow LaFreniere... would he be better than Auston Matthews or in the same category as Mitch Marner.

Richards made his numbers playing with Vinny Lecavalier.

Serious question... Assuming the NHLPA does allow him to be included, what’s the initial value on his Young Guns RC?

I think this is already stated somewhere but I DO have confirmation from a credible source that LAF will be included in series 1. Further more this applies to other bubble rookies but how they are dispersed between series 1 and 2 is for UD to determine. Not that this is different than how they operate now

Bingo. This has been known for about a week now, folks!
