The question...if you could pick one player to build your franchise around, who would it be?

28 of 30 GMs responded.

15 chose Crosby.
7 chose Luongo.
5 chose Ovechkin.

I do not know who got the other first place vote, but the segment did show highlights by Phaneuf and Lecavalier, so I assume it may have been one of them.
 
It depends if your main goal is as GM
Obviously you are going to get the pick of the litter but from a strictly marking standpoint - I don't think anyone is going to put meat in the seats and get a community excited like Crosby will. Ovechkin is great but he doesn't have the marketing draw that Crosby does.
If you want to put together a defensive scheme and draft goalie and build a defensive team around him - you would probably be more successful from a wins standpoint but I don't think you would have the marketability you would with an electric player. And if I'm running a team - I want to make money, as much as humanly possible.

Not so sure I agree with this. I think Ovy might even be a little bit more marketable. The guy is crazy talented but he is also very interesting off the ice as well. Don't get me wrong I am not a Crosby hater, but he is a little on the boring side off the ice. Always says the "right" thing and just doesn't have the same personality Ovechkin has.
That being said I think I would still pick Crosby because he is the better all around hockey guy, just not marketability wise.

I am not a huge fan of either - I'll just say that they are both rediculously talented and I can understand arguement for either as best player in the league...that being said.

Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh, 825,783 (1st overall)
Alex Ovechkin, Washington, 475,297 (3rd for forwards in the Eastern Conference))

2008 All Star Voting
I can't find the exact results however I can find that Crosby once again led the voting - as of Dec 8th it looked like this
Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh, 326,131 (1st overall)
Alex Ovechkin, Washington, 106,121 (6th for forwards in the Eastern Conference)

While I think the talent level can be argued - I think popularity cannot.
 
I still don't understand the dislike of Sidney Crosby, especially from Canadians.

He is multi-talented and hockey is his life, he loves to play, practice and talk about hockey. If Mario concentrated on that as much as his wife, kids, golf, smoking and wine, he could have been the greatest ever. If Jagr gave 100% every day, he also could have been the best ever. I congratulate Sidney on his devotion to hockey and wish others would do the same.

Biggest need for a new franchise is putting fannies in seats.Got to go with The Kid but Ovy would be a close second.
 
I have always been brought up to build your team around the goalie. However like most have said. Sid Sells Seats...EVERYWHERE. If the Pens could build a 30K seat arena, they'd probably fill it.
 
What I find amusing is the two people who have picked another goalie over Luongo (the biased fan excluded) are both from Alberta... ;) Just kdiing around.

That being said, I can't disagree with any of the three players picked by the GMs. Each one brings attributes that any 'building' team would love to have.

This sums up my feelings exactly. Nicely said.

I can answer your query about why Canadians turn on him by pointing out what Don Cherry was talking about on Coaches Corner tonight...

Just like Tim Horton's and Molson, there is another tradition we live by...we eat our own.

We will find some reason to hate every Canadian superstar (and when I say we, I am talking about the majority of fans, not myself).

Tavares is just starting to get a taste of it, as Don was saying. I'm sure if he gets too good, he'll be the next most hated/loved player in Canada.

I wonder how many Canadian anti-Crosbys will be changing their tunes when he gets the Olympis gold medal he just delievered for us around his neck. You watch then how the tide will turn, just as it did for Gretzky after the '87 Canada Cup.

Gretz was the most hated/loved player in Canada for a decade before he united the country with a huge international victory (with Mario, of course). I suspect Crosby will have to do the same, because although he is not a whiner at all anymore, people cling to that ridiculous charactaristic with all they've got...because it is all they've got.
