Is NOW the time to sell?

Hello all,

just a question for you fine folk - do you think now is the time to part with some of your collection?

Since my time of collecting (started late 90's) I have never seen sales so inflated/crazy!

Is this a one-off phenomenon? Is the bubble going to burst? Is this going to level off and maintain a steady pace?

I don't need to sell, but with what cards are going for, am I crazy not selling?

I'm curious to hear the thoughts of others :beer:

I won’t tell you what to do (no one should, that should be your own decision), but my own prediction is that 2021 will be sheer insanity when it comes to cards. If you’re holding high end basketball, baseball, football or any GOAT RCs, this year is the year to sell. Hockey is just starting to be noticed (Gretzky is almost out of reach, Lemieux is exploding and Patrick Roy is on deck) and should follow, but are still way behind the rest.

I personally will be selling most of what I have this year and if there’s a correction in the next year or two, I can buy them back later. If not, I still make off like a bandit.

I've enjoyed selling off my Prime Colors PC the past month or so (shockingly, it's been profitable), and it certainly has me thinking of opening up the vault a bit once I'm done selling the Prime stuff. I don't really understand the insanity of the RC market, but I'm not really involved with that stuff anyway. But it seems Superstar/HOF stuff has gone up quite a bit, as well as rare parallels, and selling it off for a decent amount and eventually buying it back again for cheaper certainly sounds appealing to me.
 
Everything I've sold in the last 3 months is worth significantly more then what I sold it for. Now with that said I've taken those proceeds and put them back into other cards so its not a total loss (if you can even call it that).

Currently I'm not selling much and buying up bargains that I can find on facebook and ebay. However I do need to start parting with some non-PC stuff pretty quick here. Its just tough to do with prices constantly rising week over week.
 
There's never any shame in locking in a profit. A win is a win. Just have to not look back when the market continues to climb after you sell.

The way bigtime investment money is starting to pour into certain blue chip hockey RCs I don't see this slowing down any time soon. Might only just be starting since hockey was one of the last sports to catch the train and out of the big four sports it's the lowest prices to buy in at relatively speaking. The people spending $3k on a PSA 10 Crosby YG are probably the same folks who filled their pockets with $10k basketball RCs and see hockey as a bargain in comparison.
 
Just noticed while doing my facebook and ebay rounds that nearly every single PSA 10 of early 90's Upper Deck rookies (Bure, Fedorov, Forsberg, Hasek, Kariya and probably many others) have been bought up off ebay. The only ones left on ebay are auctions or way overpriced/just listed. And some French versions sold for $400-$500.

When I see stuff like that it gives me some worry that there are shenanigans at play. How do none of these cards sell for a month (or barely none) and then dozens all get bought up over the span of 2-3 days?

Same thing happened with the Jagr OPC Premier PSA 10's starting a couple weeks back.

And this is coming from someone who love the 90's cards and thinks there is some long term value there. It all very confusing and defies logic.

It's mostly the high-grade and top names that are going up. I wish all the lower-end stuff could go up, I have about 2000 inserts/parallels/GU/autos/RCs to move, but 50¢ cards are staying 50¢ cards.

I'm in this hobby for fun. I love 80s and 90s rookies, still a lot of raw HOFers and stars rookies affordable. I'm slowly building a collection of those. Got Jagr OPCP, Damphousse, Carbonneau, Peter Stastny, Pierre Turgeon, Clark Gillies, ... lately. I also have a Sundin incoming. Fun and cheap :)

When it comes to investment, I prefer to live debt free and I see the potential and safety of land and precious metals.

If you have cards that are really valuable now and you can sell them and use the money for something that enriches your life more than maybe you should. Otherwise, just hold onto your collection. I wouldn't make a decision based on what future prices might be. No one can really predict the market. Just my 2 cents.

^ this 100%. Everyone's approach is different from investment to entertainment expense for the hobby. I look back and laugh at some things (i.e. selling a LBJ #/99 Exquisite 3clr ARP for $10k). Pretty crazy right now and it's nice to see more people in the card hobby and especially hockey getting some recognition as well.

Guys like JeremyL with his show have created great, lasting content for newbies to get in as well.

Hey Greg!! You old dog!

As you know, a while back I set a new hobby goal (get PSA 5 Orr RC). With that, I sold off the dusty stuff I didn't much care about till I had enough for the Orr.
Don't sell unless you know what you want to do with the money. And as I know you do, keep the money in the hobby.

(Market sucked at the time, but no regrets)

Sportcards in general have gone crazy, I think it has to do with Celebs getting involved with collecting. So many new collectors and some with real deep pockets. In the last few months we have seen a few million dollar cards sell and this prizm craze just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Like it was said, if you have high grade GOAT RC it may be time to sell. There is no easy answer but I have not been buying anything in years so I have started selling my high end basketball and soccer.
 
Does anyone think that the recent sale of OPC Gretzky RC of over $1 million fueled the market? I feel like it has.

The sports card market was already a huge, raging bonfire.... the Gretzky sale was just a jerry can of fuel getting tossed into it haha.
 
As crazy as hockey is getting it still pales in comparison to the other sports. And is still very much civilized in comparison. The cards taking the biggest leaps are the all time greats and the best of the best modern players. The very cards that have been undervalued for years and years and are just now getting their due.

In basketball for example if one random player drops 40 points in a game his cards immediately go like 4x or 5x. That's the kind of wild swing that would make me nervous. Seeing Gretzky and Lemieux and Crosby and Ovie and these generational guys finally getting respect from not just hockey collectors but the hobby at large, I'm not worried about that growth.

If a random third liner you've never heard of scores a hat trick in the first game of the season and his YG card triples overnight then stay away from something like that lol. Very different situation than what we're seeing with GOAT cards.
 
It depends- veteran game used and auto mid/high end (non rookie), I'm selling. Rookie cards of guys who could benefit from another season (I'm think Farabee or Frost on the Flyers), I'm holding. Rookie cards of future 1st ballot HOFs such as (for me anyways- patrick kane), I'm keeping. I wouldn't be selling Sid or Ovi unless I really just needed/wanted the cash. But like some have said- a bird in hand is better than two in the bush...

That’s the shot of rocket fuel the hockey card market needed.

For anyone listening, hockey is the last of the big leagues to get noticed. If you want to flip or if you’ve had your eye on a card for a while, now’s the time to buy. If hockey explodes the way the other leagues have, you’ll regret not buying in on your cards of interest. One of my good buddies wanted a hockey card to buy in on. I told him a PSA 9 or 10 Lemieux or Roy. He bought a PSA 9 Lemieux. They were selling for $1k when he bought in, now it’s over $5k. I’m his best friend in the world right now.

My wife suggested that I get a new turntable. I listed 36 cards on eBay and had it paid for in a day.

I had a goal and I achieved it; nothing to regret there.
