Is this an IP auto?

I traded for this card a while back and was under the impression that the auto version was part of the set. I now have someone that is interested in it but I can't seem to find anything that indicates that it is.

Did I buy an in person auto or an auto version of the card?

I think it is an ip auto, but pretty easy to tell. Check the back of the card, does it say congratulations, UD guarantees this Gretzky signature...if not, it is ip

I concur. When I first saw it, I thought autopen immediately.

Is there any sort of COA on the back of the card? If you go to http://www.kingofmcdonaldscards.com/1997-99.html you can see on the back of his autograph gretzky there is a hologram sticker on the card. I don't see that on yours. Pretty sure you have an IP auto.

Definitely auto-pen. Check out this video for a more detailed explanation - any time you see that "tail" at the end of the Y, you can be pretty sure it's an autopen.
