Is this card still "tradeworthy"? What do you think?

Hi,

I received the following high-end card that I won on eBay today. Besides the little damage in the lower left corner (green oval) of the card, I also noticed 3 lines near the patches (red ovals):

Unlike the "damage in the green oval" which was visible in the seller's scan, the "damages in these red ovals" are not visible in the seller's scan:

The card was sent properly in a soft sleeve, thick toploader with extra cards, team bag and bubble envelope. So I have no idea what caused it and whether or not the seller knew about it. Perhaps it went wrong in the manufacturing process or when UD put it into a pack. Or it's common with (SPGU) multiple patches that are different in thickness? Any idea's?

Anyways, the seller has a return policy, but I have not contacted him (yet). Please note, I am not looking to take advantage of this and back out of a deal. I still think it's a great card for a good price, but my intention was to use this rare card as tradebait for Jere Lehtinen cards I still need, so it is not for the PC. However, I am not sure whether or not the card is still usefull as tradebait.

My questions: What do you think? Would you consider the damage on this card acceptable (when trading/selling)?

only if you are upfront about the damage, and both parties agree to proceed with the trade/sale.
 
It's possible it went through some kind of rolling machine during transit.
It's possible it was like that to begin with.

Those extra thick toploaders are too flimsy IMO - spring for a 1-touch or a screw-down and be done with it

If I knew that kind of damage was on the card, I wouldn't want it.
Notwithstanding the ding at the bottom, which is clear in both scans, if it was me, I'd return it.

agreed with this...to me if the damage isnt huge and its a card i want...ill take it (maybe at a reduced price/cost....or not) an upgrade after if i get the chance

but again as long as both parties agree and are upfront
 
Sweet card its a patch card not a Rookie Card I think you'll do fine if you want to move it Just be up front about the damage Keith
 
I am currently stuck on that the original sellers picture doesn't have those creases in it. Did the description of the card include anything about those creases? If they didn't I would request a refund, you return the card..get your money back, and wait for another rare card to cross your path...grab it and hope it doesn't have damage so it'd be easier to move!

That being said if you were going to trade it, I think that's okay as long as you fully disclose the damage prior to the deal. No harm no foul, in that case. If someone really wants it, I can't see that really deterring them as the card is /5 and it may potentially be their only pass at it?

It goes without saying that I am upfront (always has and always will be;)) about the condition of a card when dealing.

My only concern is that I will not be able to move this nice piece of tradebait because of this condition. As a collector, I don't think it's too bad, but when the rest of the HI community says it is, then that is something to consider.

P.S. In the item description there were not any remarks about the condition of the card; just a reference to the attaches scan.
 
I would contact the seller and send them the scans that you are showing us.

I would also state that while you are happy with the card in your collection - you are disappointed in the received condition. You would be happy to keep the card with an appropriate price deduction - or you could return it - although that becomes expensive for both sides.

Normally I ask for between 20% and 25% off for a nicer card that is received in less than stellar condition. Howver based on the rarity of the acrd - and knowing it can not be replaced - I would consider a lower % discount........

IF AND ONLY IF YOU BELIEVE THAT IT WILL NOT IMPAIR YOUR ABILITY TO TRADE THE CARD.


For example - I know that I would be happy with that card if it were a Zetterberg rare card and it contained similar nice collection of patches as that one does.

Well said Bruce, but this is bait to him and nothing more.
Any other collector may not feel the same way, and as such, I think it's in the OP's best interest to return the card and get his money back.
 
IMO if you need this card as a player or set collector, your taking it, its numbered to low to risk it not showing up again.
However obv the damage would need to be discussed. Thats my 2 cents
 
I hate to say it but It sucks when things go through the mail system. I looked a the listing for sure no visible damage on the scans. he does say

"Cards will be shipped in a toploader and bubble envelope. I will not be responsible for lost, damaged or misdirected mail if you have not paid for Xpresspost shipping or bought applicable insurance."

I know it sucks that canada post or other postal services may have caused the damage. And I would hate to get a card damaged like this myself but after it is out of the sellers hands who knows what happens, especially if he did all things he could to ensure it would arrive properly.
 
Maybe people should really think about paying and extra buck or 2 and ask the seller about sending cards in one touch magnetics or screw downs? If I'm making expensive purchases I always request the cards to be sent in one touch magnetics or screw downs.....but that's just me!!
I'm one of the few who don't definitely mind paying more for extra for shipping and insurance as long as my card makes here safe and sound. I just factor the shipping costs into what I want to pay for the card and always email and ask the seller what his shipping methods are.
Was the card shipped with insurance? If I were you, I'd ask the seller and see if a refund was possible (or take abit of a discount for the damage) and see if he could proceed to show Canada Post with the before and after pics that the card was likely damaged during the shipping process. Work together as he'd probbaly appreciate it as a seller!!!

I also just looked at the auction, and was suprised to see who the seller was. For what I am about to say, please don't take this as sticking up for the seller. I know the seller personally and have dealt with him on over 100 cards over the past few years. I can honestly say that I have NEVER had a problem before with the quality of his cards or ever found anything that led me to believe that he even remotely misled me about the quality of a card. I'm sure he would have said something if the card had those creases in it before.

Having said that, I'm also sure that he will do whatever it takes to make you happy. If he doesn't get back to quickly via emails, you may have to wait a bit though. I know he is in the military and is scheduled to head to Afganastan soon. IF that happens to be the case, I WILL BUY THE CARD BACK FROM YOU and deal with it with him when he gets back. I wouldn't say or do that for many people out there, but like I said, he is one of the "good guys" in the hobby (or was before he got out) and I don't want to see his name get smeared because of something like this. Let me know how things go.

On the contrary to what people think, I have been told by my post office NUMEROUS times, that with Canada Post, insurance does NOT cover damage done by them...just lost items. Kind of defeats the purpose of insurance...doesn't it :)

My main concern and question was how these creases on the card would affect the tradevalue and the possibility to move this card in the future.

I would like to point out the following:
1. I'm NOT accusing or bashing the seller for this matter. I deliberately left out the name of the seller or a link to the auction.
2. Generally, I DO NOT have a problem to pay extra for better shipping. But in view of the auction price of $55, the fact that insurance was not an optional for me (since I do not live in Canada), the only option of better shipping was Express Post (at least $25). In view of the price of this shipping method and the import duties (also at least $25) that would likely follow with it, I decided not to do that. So, we are not talking about paying a lousy $2 extra. If that was the case, I would agree with deankal.

koondog44 - I appreciate your offer!
