Maybe in the NHL, yeah. I think there has to be either money, draft picks or another player on the line in the NHL. The only (somewhat) similar trade I can think of in the NHL's history was Ray Sheppard. As I recall, Buffalo traded him to the Rangers for $1 and Future Considerations. I believe the "Future Considerations" were the Rangers paying the Sabres whatever Sheppard's salary was destined to be in 1990-91.
Harold Ballard sold the Hamilton Kitty Cats for $1. The highlight of Hamilton sports lore.
I believe the Jets also sold Kris Draper for $1.

why would a team do this?? surely an NHL player is worth more than $1 ??? do the managers scratch eachothers backs ???
The GM at the time ( I forget who) promised Draper that if he couldn't crack the Jets roster, he'd move him to a team that could use him. When the time came, Draper wasn't able to get a spot, and the GM honoured his word, moving him for a buck. I don't know the whole story, but I know that the GM was aware that Draper had talent. I don't know exactly why anyone would offer that to a player, but look what happened in Anaheim with Bryzgalov.
You have got to be kidding me?
I've seen them play. Someone overpaid.
Glen Sather is hosting a BBQ for the Rangers at his home, and he's the chef, but he's running low on potatoes. So he calls out to his good pal Petr Prucha.
"Petr, I need you to run to the All-Natural Food Mart on Long Island, and ask the owner, a good friend of mine, to give you a bag of his finest organic potatoes!"
Being a loyal guest, Prucha gets in his Porsche, and speeds away to Long Island to find the All-Natural Food Mart.
A little while later, Scott Gomez arrives at the BBQ, late as usual, and goes to have a beer with the boys. He notices Petr Prucha is nowhere to be seen.
Alarmed because he had seen Petr leave the arena early for Slat's house, he calls out, "Hey Slats! Where's Petr Prucha?"
Sather calmly replies, "I sent him to Long Island for a sack of potatoes."
From somewhere in the back, Henrik Lundqvist yells out, "Good trade, Slats!"
