Sorry if this has been mentioned already.

In some long shot kind of way, would ITG be able to approach Panini and get some type of sub license through them to produce even just one set with nhl logos etc?

I've wondered about that myself. I think if Panini got the exclusive, then they could sub-license. If it's non-exclusive, then not.
That being said, if they are paying for an exclusive, there is very little incentive to turn around and let someone else produce a competing product.

Not likely, I would say that there would be express language in the contract forbidding such subletting of the license...

There wasn't any such language to my knowledge in the previous exclusive. Likely won't be now. There wasn't any sublicensing agreement under UD - but that's all we can say about it. Brian would know more.
