Hey everyone. I saw that Dr. Price wanted a thread started on the years labeled on the label of Ultimate collection. So I will start this with I would like to see them labeled with just one year (I.E. Ultimate 10th should be labeled as Ultimate 2010 and so on)

Let me know your thoughts.
 
I like they way they label them (though I might suggest putting the 'season' they are released as the year).

Hockey is a 'split' year season. I like that the cards reflect that.
 
Personally, since ITG does not produce NHL rookie cards I don't think the split year format is really necessary for the majority of products. With a licensed product rookie collectors need to know the season the set was intended to represent in order to designate the rookies, with ITG the products tend to represent the sport as a whole as opposed to a particular season for a particular league.

If there are CHL/AHL rookies in Heroes & Prospects for example then maybe the split year format should be used, for the rest of the products I think the year alone would suffice and reduce confusion.
 
I'd say that you change the title of the thread to "Ultimate Memorabilia" -- after all, there is ONLY ONE Ultimate. LOL.

But I like it how it is. Don't fix if it isn't broken.
 
I say leave it as is. The current year designation matches up well with the way seemingly everything else is labeled. For what it is worth, after 2003-04 I stopped referring to it by year and use the edition numbers instead.

I agree, everything you need to know is already clearly printed on the label.

ITG UM is my favorite product and the only one I collect anymore.
Don't change a thing unless you want to cut back on the future stars and load up on the vintage instead.... that works for me :)
 
Obviously, the biggest impact on a set's year designation is the status of RCs. Since ITG products are unlicensed and do not have any rookie cards, that part of it is irrelevant to the discussion.

The second biggest issue, though, is how accurate the set's year designation actually matches up with when the product was released. In that aspect, for example, releasing a 2008-09 product two months into the 2009-10 season pretty much doesn't make any sense at all.

ITG Ultimate doesn't need a "hockey season" designation. It's not a set that ties itself to a specific season of current hockey anyway. ITG would be best served to officially name the set with the calendar year it came out -- for example, this November's release would be 2010 ITG Ultimate 10th Edition.
 
I don't collect much ITG, but I think any set release should correspond with the current hockey season. Anything released from October until June should reflect that hockey season. I really don't see the need to release products from July to September.

I will continue to monitor this thread and comment when necessary.

So far, it's exactly what I would have predicted. Some like it the way it is and some would like changes.

For the last three years we have released Ultimate at the Fall Expo and we plan on continuing that, please keep that in mind.

It doesn't matter. Products like 1972 and Franchises. Does it really matter what year you designate them as?

H&P is a little different as the set does represent junior and AHL hockey and should try to cater to the specific season it's being made for.
 
Why does it need a year or season at all? It has a built in number in its title, ie UM9 or UM10 and as long as a standard time period passes between each release that should be all the indication of "time" that's required. Upper Deck has UD series 1 and 2, they're released as "2009-2010 Upper Desk Series 1 or 2" cause it's the first or second version in that season. To call it 2009-2010 or 2010 UM10 sounds like it's the 10th version in that year or season, which it isn't. If you want to label it with a year or season, then remove the version numbers after or leave the version numbers and get rid of the season or year.

EDIT: Superlative seems to be doing just fine with volume numbers or theme names and no years mentioned.

leave it as 2009-10 regardless of being released in November. same as with UD's delays, the timing of the release doesn't really bother me. it's being represented as a product for the 200X-XX season and as such, that's what i'll go with. if anything, i find it more uniform to keep the year's continuing as they have been.

Since these sets typically come out at the end of the year or even offseason, match the year with when the Stanley Cup is awarded. When you say UM10, it would be Ult set ten issued with the season that resulted in the Hawks recieving the Cup? Or is that too much use of "The Cup"? lol
I have been often confused with ebay ads and card backs that only list one year.
