Just got done reading an interesting article in the new Sports Illustrated entitled "The Last Iconic Baseball Card" and was surprised (well maybe not) when I read this sentence: A lawsuit by UD challenging Topp's exlusive deal is also a possibility.

UD has no problem having the NHL exclusive deal but wants to possibly put up a fight against Topp's for having the baseball exclusive. Sorry, but give me a break. Almost makes one want to stop collecting cards altogether.

What do you guys think?

I don't know what kind of credibility Sports Illustrated has on the sports card industry, but they're pointing it out that it is a "possibility", its nothing UD has stated or hinted at doing.

I think you need to know all the facts about why UD would challenge the Topps exclusive before you insinuate or draw comparisons to the hockey exclusive.

And since we will likely never know all the facts, we should at least recognize that we don't know all the facts and therefore all we have is random speculation.

I say put all of the owners of card companies into an electrified cage with random weapons (tasers, blunt objects and an assortment of sprays - pepper, acid and lemon Pledge to name a few) and let them fight it out until there's one man standing. The winner gets their choice of contracts and the losers literally have to suck eggs.

Can't we just go back to the way it was in the early 90s and let everyone print cards? Hands up those of you who miss broder cards? Me too, me too.

I honestly can't draw a connection between UD wanting to stay in the baseball card market and challenge Topps in court on it, and interest in collecting hockey cards.

Maybe UD could give Dr Price a call for ideas on how to be successful without a licence haha. UD are barely successful with a licence.

Basketball is gone exclusive to panini, baseball might be going to topps...wow.

MLB cards are going to topps. UD still has access to all of the 'PA contracted players and any legends they have. this isn't the end of the world for UD. Just be on the lookout for more Michael Buysner cards.

i think the quarreling among the companies has no effect on my desire to participate in this hobby nor my love of the game.

what is your measure of success? i understand the UD vs ITG debate but i don't think there is a question as to which company has done more business.

for hobby collectors who collect a certian player.... and especially those who dont sign often i think in my own opinion that this would be a nightmare.

You would have Dr Price, UD, Topps, Pacific, OPC, ETC wanting ovechkin and crosby to sign there cards.
You'd end up with like 4 autos of crosby and ovechkin in each set. Maybe its a good thing for the people who pull them, but not for the ones who want them

I dont get it, why do some hockey players dont like signing.
I mean i could sign my auto all day if i had to.... and there paying me!!!!!!!!!!

Chances are that you don't already have a salary in excess of $1 million. You probably also don't have the lifestyle or busy social calendar that they do.

Its all relative and that's why you would do it (as would I), and some of them don't.

Gomaz, stop being so defensive. We all know your connection to UD; and we all certianly appreciate it.

But the OP simply made an interesting point/statement. I don't think the OP gave us inaccurate information or made it out like he was reporting a fact. He specifically wrote "possibility."

Your first post made you sound like you were UD's attorney. Your second post wasn't far off.

Speculation is chatted about all the time on these boards. When it's all said and done, most intelligent folks recognize that speculation is just that and nothing more.

Unfortunately, there are some who would take online posts as gospel - and then it eventually degenerates into an I hate UD thread.

Assume for a second that this is true - do you really blame Upper Deck for this?

I personally wouldn't - they are a business and are trying to take advantage where they can and mitigate damage where they do not have that advantage. They saw an opportunity and sprung when the NHL was desperate and willing - it works a bit different on the other side of the fence so they have to act accordingly. There is no hypocracy here, just a business trying to maximize markets. Not so sure what is shocking here.

Seconded. There's not nearly enough information to infer anything about UD's intentions. They've only stated in a press release that they're going to continue making baseball cards, but nothing about a lawsuit, IIRC.

So you will tell me to stop being defensive, within your own defensive oriented post?!?!

My "connection" with UD has been accompanied by an understanding of their business that many others do not have. Should I remain silent? Or should I attempt to make a point? I think I will continue with the latter; but thanks for giving me the opportunity to consider my options

My career is in the area of law. My nose is buried in legislation all day long, (except when I am in here :D) which I then interpret and include said interpretation in memorandum and issue to clients. Hence, the tone of my posts. It is how I communicate, especially when I am at work.

If my posts offend you, please feel free to skip over them. No loss for anyone that way.

No worries, if anyone should be offended it should be me... cause it was in regards to my comment. But i'm not offened. Your right.:owned:
I mean crosby's makin 8.7 million lol. and most players who sign are making $1 million plus.
I mean i dunno what UD and ITG give their players when signing, but you would think they'd say its for the fans who cheer us on every night at home and at the arena, i'll take 1 hour and sign what ever you need me to sign. i mean how long does it take to sign a auto(ilya zubov ring a bell? lol) He must have been sleeping when he was signing the cup rcs!
But you have to hand it to UD and ITG for always getting them to auto most cards even if it is a redemtion!

Thanks for your post, but it actually was not in reference to your post. He mentioned my first two posts which came before your first post did. Hope this clears that up :D
