I'm not a gambling man but something tells me that this almost certainly was purchased by Leaf.

Upper Deck doesn't need it. They have (and get away with) photo-shoot garbage.
 
Maybe I'm on my own here, but I will respectfully disagree. I really hope that jersey gets left alone and not chopped up into pieces. IF (and remember that's if) he turns out to be what he is supposed to be and ends up being one of the greatest Sabres of all time, I really hope his original jersey ends up somewhere on display instead of chopped up into 1 inch squares for cards.

Just my opinion of course though
 
Totally agree. Something like this should be kept whole and preserved somewhere. Not chopped up into pieces and end up selling for $50 each piece. Ten years from now each piece will be in a dollar bin at some show.

I think that with Leaf's deal with Eichel they already have access to some of his jerseys. If memory serves one of the Brians said they have one already.

If UD intends to go ahead with game-worn material in a set like UD Premier or The Cup, they will certainly need it.
 
Though I wouldn't be one bit surprised if Leaf bought this, I sort of hope they didn't. The first jersey of a star like this should not be chopped. Cut up another rookie year jersey instead.

Agree! Chopping this jersey into little squares would be a shame.

That happens a lot, but there's no mention of it in the auction description. Just that it has the first game tag.

Then again the NHL is pretty lazy when it comes to listing these jerseys. Hardly any pictures, poor information... Put some effort into it NHL.
 
I wouldn't be all that surprised if Adam Martin (as in Dave & Adams) was at least one of the last bidders on that.

Jerseys aren't Jack's to give away. They belong to the team. He no doubt got one of his first jerseys as a gift from the team but the rest will likely go through NHL auctions or whatever other avenues Buffalo uses to market jerseys.

Unless Leaf has a deal with the team itself they probably have to get jerseys via secondary market. They can probably get other pieces of equipment from Jack though.

Upper Deck on the other hand, with the new deal they appear to have in place with the NHL, will have no trouble getting a jersey. At the half way point of the season I'd be surprised if they didn't already have one.

I'm curious to see if Brian from Leaf weighs in here in regards to this (or other) Eichel jerseys.

I would laugh so loud if Leaf signed an exclusives deal that doesn't involve at least one game used jersey in the deal!!

Like I said though, it's not necessarily up to Jack to make that promise. And since Leaf isn't an NHL licensee I doubt they can negotiate an autograph deal with a player outside of the NHL/NHLPA umbrella and demand an NHL gamer from the team.

In a normal situation players don't get to keep their jerseys, they are property of the team. There are exceptions, like maybe a Winter Classic or All-Star jersey worn during one period of their respective games, and maybe a Cup finals jersey or special milestone jersey here and there.

The average regular season jersey is retained by the team or turned over to Meigray if that team happens to be part of the Meigray program. A player can't just say "I'm keeping this jersey to give to Leaf" unless the team is flexible enough to allow it.

Maybe Jack asked for a Sabres gamer on Leaf's behalf and being a high-profile rookie perhaps they allowed it, maybe Leaf worked something out with the Sabres separately, or maybe they had to buy this jersey via auction. Since the Sabres are not a Meigray team it makes the acquisition a little more complicated but certainly not impossible.

Connor McDavid on the other hand plays for a Meigray team and his rookie jerseys would have been preordered by buyers well before the season even started. I wonder how they're handling all those orders since Connor has been out of the lineup so long...

No doubt Leaf has been down this road a million times and if there's a way for them to easily get an Eichel rookie gamer they would have already done it. I would love to hear from Brian Gray about it because I find this stuff very interesting.

I suggested before but can you imagine a real licensed game used jersey set! Upper Deck game dated or something like that where you know from what game the jersey is! that would rebuild the jersey card reputation big time!
 
I'm hoping that it wasn't a card company who bought that jersey

It would be horrible to see such a big piece of Sabres history be chopped up
