Jared Staal traded to the Hurricanes

I love the pickup! The Canes traded a 5th round pick acquired from Nashville for a prospect with upside.
Now, my understanding of why Phoenix traded him is not because of his on ice performance. He had not signed a contract with Phoenix and was set to go back in the draft on June 1st. The Hurricanes have until that time to sign him to a contract or they basically traded a 5th rounder for nothing. I have every expectation that they will be able to sign him (especially with his brother captaining the NHL team).

Now this is the second draft pick that Phoenix has not been able to sign in the past couple of years (see Blake Wheeler).

Here is a quote from the Hurricane's website;
"The Hurricanes have until June 1 to sign Staal to an entry-level contract, or he would re-enter the draft. The pick traded for Staal originally belonged to the Nashville Predators, and was conditionally acquired by the Hurricanes on June 19, 2008, along with Darcy Hordichuk in exchange for Carolina’s fifth-round pick in 2009."

Not saying it's a bad deal, necessarily. But after watching all four of them in the OHL over the years, Jared has been underwhelming to say the least. Hopefully he proves me wrong though!

Sounds like you have real comparable perspective with seeing all 4 of them. Thanks for sharing about him.
Hopefully he will end up living up the name!

I totally misread that and thought it said Jordan....

I thought it said jordan too up until I read this post :|

I have heard that Jared has, or had, the biggest upside. But after seeing all 3 of the others, I am finding it less and less likely.

The only reason he was even drafted was because of his last name. :rolleyes: And he was supposed to be the "best" of them all too.

Yup. I remember seeing a special on the Staals a few years back and their father said Jared was the most talented. I think this was during the Canes stanley cup championship.

Looks like a good move by the Hurricanes. They are light on RW prospects. Seems silly for the Coyotes. They have hardly any RW prospects. Unless they are sliding some of their Centers over but they dont have a ton of those either.
