Junk wax, or the evening redness in the west

I've been on a nostaglia run lately with my baseball card collecting, picking up boxes or sets of early 90s Topps, Donruss, and a few Fleer. Haven't been super happy with the latest offerings from UD after jumping back into the hobby a few years ago. With that, I went back to some early 90s in hockey too. Grabbed a box of 90-91 Topps and UD.

We ripped the two boxes and it was a lot of fun telling my family about cards used to be produced, how sets were comprised, and when inserts, memorabilia, and autos would begin making regular appearances later.

I wasn't able to build a base set out of either box but they weren't expensive so buying a second wouldn't be horrific. We were able to build the Team Scoring Leader set from Topps and pulled 2 Modano RCs. The gum did stain the cards they were on so that was not so fun. Only pulled 1 Modano RC out of UD, pulled 5 holograms - 3 Gretzky stopping and 2 Yzerman. Also, the gum does not hold its flavor after 35 years and was a bit crunchy.

A lot of fun for fairly cheap rips. Bunch of memories of a ton of former players and going "Oh yeah I remember him". There is a LCS that has some junk wax boxes that I plan on checking out in the future and posting here. Thank you for looking.

I got a few UD 90-91 packs from repacks at Dollarama last year. Fun stuff! I opened a lot of UD 91-92 back in the days.

There are some classic cards in those. I love the Modano UD rookie even if it’s not worth much.

Fun stuff, both great sets. I personally still love the 90/91 and 91/92 Topps/OPC sets, kind of the last of the regular card stock sets (until they started doing retro stuff). And heck, 90/91 UD will always be a classic. Have fun with it, and if you still end up short on the 90/91 Topps hit me up, I have a couple hundred dupes sitting in a box.

Still have an unopened box of series 1 myself buried some where.

I might take you guys up on your offer. I picked up another box for the era, this time a box of 91-92 Topps. Some changes from the previous year: no gum, cello style wrapper instead of wax, cleaner finish not as rough, brighter photos. Its a nice set, one team scoring leaders glossy card per pack (21 total). Larger set, 528 vs 396, featuring players for the new expansion San Jose Sharks.

Had fun ripping this box. Cleaner packs and cards. Didn't complete the set but did complete the Team Scoring Leaders insert set. Hard to believe this was 33 years ago and there were only 22 teams. Still fun to rip and revisit childhood memories.

Went by the local shop today and scooped up a box of 92-93 Topps. If you noticed the trend, I'm kind of a Topps guy but I'm also limiting myself so I don't just buy everything in front of me. Set wise, same size as the previous year 528 (factory set got 529, Lindros). The one per pack insert is replaced by Topps Gold at one per pack. When I was a kid the Topps Gold was my favorite.

Didn't get the entire set but that's okay. 36 gold, no dupes. Pulled one Modano, the gold version so that was nice. Overall quality has improved over the previous years. Its fun grabbing big set boxes with little filler for very cheap. Thanks for the look.
