Kaapo Kakko Signs Exclusive Autograph Deal with PANINI! Woof!

just saved me a ton of money at least... can't wait to barf when i see that plain blue jersey with all the letters photoshopped out.

I really thought we were done with this nonsense.

The only winner in this deal is Kaapo Kakko (surprise!).

And what products will his cards be featured in? Some crappy Panini version of Goodwin Champions?

This blows.

Can't wait to get his FWA from 2024-25 SPA.

Maybe this is part of a larger plan to give Panini some leverage in getting back an nhlpa license.

Why does the NHLPA allow this? Should they not tell their players to sign for the company that pays them a licensing fee?

You cannot force players to sign autograph deals with any company. They have to be in sets due to group licensing - so unless the player chooses not to participate in the group licensing, which may not even be possible as a member of the PA unless you want to give up your share of royalties from jersey sales, video games, shirts etc.

No matter what side of the fence you sit on, Panini, UD, etc. The reality is this:

As soon as the exclusive was handed out in the first place - the door was opened for this nonsense.

Until the exclusive is made history, we will continue to see these scenarios and in the end the collector loses - every single time.

Upper deck signed ben simmons to an exclusive deal and still have lebron and jordan when they do t produce basketball cards. Good for panini i like that move f*** upper deck

I see that Al Muir tweeted the link earlier today too, so it must've been somewhat legit.

For anyone that viewed the article before it was yanked, check your browser history/cache. You may may be able to view your local copy. If so, take some screen shots and share with the rest of us :-)

Bingo!

PA does not require the players to sign, with anyone.

PA COULD bar licensed manufactures from signing PA members to an exclusive.

Shame on the NHL and the NHLPA for creating this new culture . Not only are we forced to buy the one company's products to get licensed cards but we have to continue to deal with other companies exclusives that hurts even the future licensed releases.

We the collector suffer once again. This Kakko signing isn't the best for the hobby future but I'm sure you can't blame him for making it.

The NHL basically just rubber stamps what the PA has done - the PA is responsible for maximizing revenues from group licensing. If that's what an exclusive does, they'll take the money and run. At the same time only having one company to deal with simplifies things for them.

The NFLPA and NBPA have done exclusives as well - to them it's all about receiving what they want out of a category. Hit or exceed their targeted number - they will take it and move on. The MLBPA has licensed Panini for cards in the last few years, but Topps still has the exclusive for MLB and MILB logos.

The PAs have also seen headaches over the years from dealing with multiple companies for whatever reason - whether it's royalty payments or purportedly game used materials or just plain dealings.

Unless you vote with your wallet, along with a majority of consumers enough to make a difference to their bottom line... nothing will change.

As I open more and more products from years ago it makes me realize just how watered down the market is currently. Even Panini was doing a great job just a few short years ago but with an Upper Deck exclusive it’s just the same rehashed garbage year after year. The loss of In The Game and the subsequent “Vault” release was the end of the Golden era of collecting in my opinion.
