Doug Gilmour is back with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHL team hired its former captain on Friday to become the player personnel advisor to general manager John Ferguson.

Nice to see that the 'Buds are keepin' a link to their past!

It was rumored for a long time that the Leafs were looking to bring Gilmour back. It is also rumored that they plan to have Gilmour replace JFJ in 1 year or less...be interesting to see.

Brian - Like anything else, I'm sure this is just a PR move by the Leafs. It's kind of like Adam Graves and Mike Richter getting positions with the Rangers. Good for the teams to keep their alumni in the mix, but they probably won't really contribute much to the team's current on-ice product. Though, I'm sure Gilmour could do a better GM job than Garth Snow.

If you spent as much time reading my posts as you do whining about them, you'd know that I do contribute positively most of the time.

The Maple Leafs aren't going to make the playoffs. I think it's funny. Doesn't matter what they do, really. There is no other team in the NHL that has such dedicated fans who have never seen their team win anything. Every Leafs move is seen with incredible optimism, and every move ends just like the one before...with devastating disappointment and hopes for better luck next year.

I'd like to see DG put into a coaching role more than an office one, if they are actually considering anything like that with him. To me, he would be a natural as a coach. Has the leadership ability, but also the ability to kick butt when need be. Doesn't have to be with Toronto necessarily, but I think he would make a good coach for any team.

Hmmm.just like the Avalanche will be missing the playoffs this year.They just barely made it this year and each of the teams in the Northeast Division improved with key additions,the Avs didn't.I'm as big and loyal an Avs fan as you will ever find,but I don't see them making it to the Playoffs this year.Maybe I'll go for the Canadians and the Flames instead.At least those franchises are headed in the right direction.

Back to the topic at hand...this is a good move by the Leafs in my opinion.Will certainly help attract more fans as well as help with the younger players on the team (i.e. Wellwood,Stajan,etc.)

The Avs are not going to miss the playoffs. This isn't optimism, it's realism.

The Oilers didn't improve this offseason.
The Canucks improved in goal, but took a step back at forward and defense.
The Flames added a playmaker, but their defense took a hit in the process.
The Wild added a very good player, but he doesn't fit their system.
The Avs lost an expendable forward and an expendable defenseman, and strengthened themselves defensively (not to mention clearing ~$20m in cap room for next summer) in the process.

The Avs are headed in the right direction. They sacrificed starpower for depth, and they have a ton of prospects that are either coming off of good rookie years (Budaj, Svatos), ready to step in now (Wolski, Richardson), or will be ready to step in next year (Hensick, Stastny, Hemingway, etc). Not to mention several years down the road. And, as I said, they will have somewhere in the neighborhood of $20m to play with come next offseason.

The Avs haven't missed the playoffs in over a decade, and they won't do it this year. At worst, they will finish #2 in the division.

As for the Avs just barely making the playoffs this year...the Ducks and Oilers just barely made the playoffs too. As a matter of fact, every lower seed knocked off the higher seed in the first round last year in the Western Conference. All you have to do is make the playoffs and anything can happen.

But nice troll attempt anyway.

Attracting fans has never been a problem for the Leafs.

Although it sad it could still not be as a player but is any one else(leaf fans)happy about yesterdays signing of Killer to the MLSE JUGERNAUNT with a management position.

This is a good move IMO should be good and could not hurt to have him around ,Killer will probally make it behind that bench one day aswell..

Remains to be seen if it will be a good move. A good player doesn't necessarily make a good front-office member. As I said, it's not as if they needed help selling tickets, or that having him back will generate much interest. Michel Goulet works with the Avs, and I don't think anyone cares, nor would they if the Avs were still in Quebec City.

It does make for a good story though.

And heck, back in the day, I had a Gilmour Leafs jersey.
