Leave it to Jets fans to come up with the best chants in hockey.

Pretty cool that the two top goal scorers are this years top two picks (along with Killorn and Panik.)

Also pretty cool that the leafs top 4 point getters are all rookies.

But as for the title, and what isn't cool (for the Leafs at least) is that so far in Matthews' NHL career in games where he scores a goal the Leafs lose 100% of the time. I'm pretty sure this won't continue that much longer but does make you feel for the kid.

As for Laine, he may be a more electrifying goal scorer than Ovie only 7 games into his career. Can he win the Richard trophy this season? Sure seems like it.

Which rookie do you think will lead them all in goals and points this year? I'm going with the obvious - Laine for goals and Nylander for points. Hehe

I have to agree that Laine looks amazing and i'll second your pick for goals but I am going with another leaf for the rookie points lead in Marner. He's a little behind so far but, wow, he looks good!!!

I agree Marner looks good and his feed to Bozak last night was a thing of beauty.

I think Laine will start having a bit of a harder time as the season wears on because teams are going to start denying him that top of the circle shot the same way they do Stammer and Ovy, if he finds another way of burying the biscuit he will likely have the most rookie goals. I think the Leafs trio of Matthews, Marner and Nylander could all outpoint him though.

Yes combined I think you are right.

I enjoyed his celly last night, he is certainly an entertaining player.

On a side note, who had Matthews, Laine, Panik, and Killorn as your leading goal scorers this far. Anyone? Anyone?

Probably more people than would have predicted the Wings 3rd overall in the standings. Lol.

I have to agree with you Jeremy. I was watching the Jets game last night, and I don't think I've seen someone shoot the puck the way he does, in a long time!

I got reamed for taking Laine in the 7th round 70th overall in a 10 team roto league by a guy who is suppose to be a hockey expert, He told me there was no way he would finish top 70 in points this year overall. I think he will, so we'll see.

I usually don't take much interest in arguments on who is going to be better, or in the case of history, who was better (Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux, Orr etc), because there is no real way to have a correct answer, as it's subject to opinion, and if it is an opinion, one's opinion cannot be wrong, it just may not be agreeable to everyone.

I think both players are gonna hit the 50-60 point level this year, barring injury, of course. I wouldn't expect it any higher, but would not be shocked if it was. Laine is comparable to Ovechkin, IMO. A pure goal scorer, or sniper, if you will? Matthews is more a complete player that can play in both ends, somewhat similar to someone like Crosby, for example. Both are extremely valuable for what they bring to the table for their teams. I'm not gonna justify making a choice on who will be the better rookie at years end.

If you look at my board name, you'll see who I'm rooting for, but in all honesty, I'm more interested in what my guy is gonna bring long term when this team is once again respectable.

I agree and was thrilled to get Marner in the 11th round of our draft for my rookie pick.

Like I said some times earlier that Laine will become a much (IMO) better player than AM in the end and the scary thing is that his shooting ability will only becoming better and better for every year since he's almost "still a child" and not fully developed yet!

So many talented kids on the ice this year... It's an exciting time for the future of hockey.

Here here. Every year we see the talent get higher at a younger age. I won't lie, sometimes I miss seeing guys like Probert and McSorley and Twist roam the ice, but todays game is more about the actual speed and skill which in my opinion is what the game was always meant to be.

At the end of the day (career), whoever can win the Stanley Cup will get the hobby love... Just like Crosby vs Ovie in their Rookie Year. You can get the goals like Ovie... or win when it counts.

TML have a bigger fan base so card wise Matthews wins lol. JK, both are great players. I get a kick out of the Jets fans, I love their passion and those chants are fantastic.

I think they are very different players. Crosby - Ovy are a great comparison. One is flashy and screams look at me I want to be noticed while the other one goes about his business and performs. I just hope Matthews is a winner like Crosby.

After a quick start to the year by both players, both have done pretty much nothing since, and in all honesty, Matthews has been outplayed by his line mate William Nylander, and teammate Mitchell Marner the last few games. Throw in Zaitsev, too. Too early to write off Laine, or Matthews, but they are sure finding out the difference of playing in the big leagues.
