Hey all, happy end of 2018 from the Larry Murphy Guy. I hope everybody had a great Christmas. Well, it's that time of year again. Sure, there are a few more days left in 2018 which might see me add to this, but I guess if that happens, I can always update this post later. Things have slowed down to the point where I think it's pretty much a case of "what you see is what you get".

It was a fairly quiet year for me hobby-wise, at least compared to years previous. A lot of you know I have slowed down out of necessity and have continued to liquidate some PC cards in order to focus on the best, most unique pieces I have. I'm still adding, mostly smaller value pickups, but I will always make exceptions and pony up for the occasional must-have piece that fills a niche, as you'll see in this thread.

So yeah, even in the slow times, I'm always a lurker with one eye open and one ear to the ground. I figured I'd catch you all up to speed on my pickups since August and end with my "Best In Show". I hope you enjoy...

Now, I can complain about the lack of headshot, nameplate or the GU not matching the team the players are pictured with, but the Murphy is at least right, and it was a quality Detroit patch at a great price, so I'll roll with the punches on this one.

The release of Leaf Hockey brought me a bounty of new cards to chase. For all the cards out there, I admittedly haven't done too well yet. I have my eye on a few, just waiting for the prices to come down to reflect the market. But in the meantime, here's what I "have" picked up:

And now for my favorite pickups of 2018:



I use the term "pickup" very loosely because it took no actual effort on my part to pick this up. No, this one's all on my great hobby friend, HI's own Ranfordfan Sean. It popped up on epack, and I casually showed it to Sean and mentioned I was going to try to contact the owner and pry it loose to complete my own "Quincy". Well, Sean did me one better. He secretly went behind my back and acquired it from the owner for a Laine YG (!) And to top it off, he wouldn't even take anything in return for it because I hadn't specifically asked him to acquire it. That's just the kind of guy he is, which leads me to the next pickup:



This card was an adventure to acquire and only enjoyed a brief stopover in my possession before making its way to Sean as a small token of thanks for his hobby help over the years. How does it compare to the Murphy? Well, it doesn't. But if you've followed Sean's all-time Oilers collection, you know how elusive this guy's signature was. I knew this simple card would mean a lot to him, and being able to surprise him with this made me as giddy as a parent on Christmas...I assume. I can't do the big gestures many in this community are known for, but this was something I "could" do and it made me feel good to give back.



Nothing to do with Larry Murphy, just a custom 4x6 signed photo of my former university History professor that I found on Ebay.

Yes, the jersey and the patch don't match, but for such a small window, it's a great and easily identifiable Leafs patch.

For a long time, I didn't have a stick card picturing Murphy with Detroit because there wasn't one. When I saw Leaf's Twitter preview of 2017 Lumber Kings, my wishes were answered. Realistically, I had only intended to pick up one or two quality copies from this rainbow, but as more parallels kept popping up, damned if they weren't mostly quality...

I coveted it if it ever hit the open market. For a while, it didn't, and I was prepared to content myself with my other copies. But when I saw it hit COMC earlier this year, even though the seller wasn't very flexible with the asking price, I had to suck it up and reel it in.

Finishing this pesky Motown Madness Murphy nameplate is still an ultimate goal of mine, but had been at a standstill at 7 of 12 for some time. Are the rest still in unopened product? Are they owned by random people who just have no idea they could make my day with them? Who knows. This product shows up so infrequently now that if I hear ANY mention of it, I have to follow up. When our own redwingfn7 mentioned a recent break, I did just that. He hadn't listed this Murphy publicly, but PMed me saying he had it. He wasn't keen on moving it at the moment, but a change of heart later, he quoted me a price he would be satisfied with and we had a deal. Thanks again so much for helping to keep my dream alive.

When I first tried my hand at completionism, this team issue was one that came up on checklists but I hadn't actually seen. I didn't know if it existed. But when a Google image search turned this up on a boutique auction site, by process of elimination, I realized it had to be it. The only problem? The site was asking $400 US for it. I kept tabs on it for a few years, but even with moderate site sales, it was nowhere near reasonable.

Over time, the price gradually went down, and the site even added a "make an offer" feature, but the math still didn't add up. I told myself if it dropped to under $100 and they were more flexible on the offer side, I would take a stab at it.

In the meantime, I lucked out and acquired an unsigned copy in a cheap 4-card listing I found from a Russian seller on Ebay. I had my copy, but this signed one was never far from my mind. Finally, this year, it dropped to under $100, and I decided to offer them 50% of their ask. If they took it, great. If they didn't, I could wait some more. They took it. I still ultimately overpaid, especially considering the shipping cost me as much as the card. But I love it and had to bring it home. It's in very good shape, especially considering its age and the fact it's basically on photo stock.

And now for the crown jewel...

When I saw this card in Leaf's Superlative preview on Twitter in 2017, it immediately shot to the top of my wishlist. Shields are shields, and I didn't have one picturing Murphy with Detroit. License or no license, Murphy is clearly recognizable as being pictured with the Red Wings. Plus, though it is a sticker, it still had a signature, and signatures were my first love and the initial foundation of my PC, so I always have a soft spot for them. This card checked all the boxes, so budget limitations be damned - if it ever surfaced, I vowed I would make it mine. In January of this year, that's exactly what happened. A few offers later, and I brought it home. So glossy and shiny; these look great in person. Thank you Leaf for creating what may well be my new favorite card in my PC:

I don't expect anything I can get in 2019 will rival that Signature Shield in terms of quality. Maybe something will be created in future, but I don't think such a card exists right now.

So many nice cards in there.

For the recent pickups - Those Crystalline signatures are my favorites. Leafs did an awesome job with those. I think I said it to you at the time of getting the first one... and others can chime in here if they want... Does it make me weird that when I see those cards the first thing I think of is a particular episode of Stark Trek TNG? (From season one. Here's a reference).

For the 2018 review of the top pickups: The Auto Shield takes the cake. I was happy to land the Ranford from the same set... but kind of wish they'd held off in making it, so a picture / auto could have been included (Leaf since got him to sign again).

And I was really happy to have landed that Game Gear card for you.... and thrilled when that McDougall showed up in my mailbox. Thanks again!

Great show, Joe. I really like this recap of all your pickups. I think posts like these are great because it shows us, as collectors, to be thankfully for what we all have in our collections I think. I mean, a card here or there would have been nice to acquire, but seeing all your pickups in one place makes you think just how lucky you were to obtain all of these sweet cards.

Great stuff, especially that shield, Game Gear, and rare team issue. Those are my favourites here!

My favorite has to be the '89/90 North Stars ADA, I'm a big fan of oddball stuff like that, followed very closely by the Signature Shield. Thanks Sean...nerd Yeah, I hear you on the Ranford. The one disappointing thing about Murphy's first appearances in Leaf products in 15/16 is the lack of contract with him, so no headshots or signatures. That includes his 15/16 Superlative Shield. Obviously they've since rectified the problem for both of us, but it could've made some of those earlier cards that much nicer. Luckily a shield still speaks for itself.

And you're right - I may not have had a big year in terms of volume or quantity, but put them all together and at the end of the year, I still had some nice pieces to recap. And I may do the same or even less in 2019, but I bet come this time next year, I'll still have something worth showing.

Thanks Al. I'm a fan of the oddball stuff too, which is why the ADA caught my eye ever since I found it. I'm sure many people wouldn't even want it because of the signature, and on Ebay it would go for a fraction of what I paid. But it wasn't on Ebay, so I had to pay the piper. And I'm all about the "story behind the cards", so I try to give everyone a bit extra to document my process and show why pieces that might not mean something to anyone else do to me.

Thanks a lot, I do too. Still not a fan of para-hell and multiple low-numbered parallels to create artificial value, but I managed to find a quality copy of each of those stick parallels across the board and completed the rainbow anyway.

Yeah, I'm a fan of them too. Both would've easily cracked my list of 2018 favorites if I'd acquired them in 2018. The Cup EoE was high on my 2017 list, and rightfully so, but the Ultimate came a few years before that. I'm always keeping an eye out for more of these if they can match up and fit my budget.

That Murphy Leaf buyback auto is my favorite as I love that set. I remember putting it together, a master set at that, broke a ton of boxes. Still have the set and love it with the skylines on the card backs!
