Hi everyone,
It's been a long time since I've been on the board and I hate to have to return under these circumstances but I have been asked by Patricia, Laurent Monette's longtime girlfriend to let people know what has happened as a lot of you knew him quite well.
For the past year Laurent has been battling cancer. It started in his tongue but over the course of the year it continued to spread and show up in different places in his body. He underwent many treatments and some hellacious surgery to try to beat this awful disease. This past fall we found out that the cancer had returned in a very aggressive form again in his tongue and also his lymph nodes and lungs. The doctors gave him an unfavorable prognosis and he faced that down with a lot of bravery and courage and Laurent was determined to fight this disease and prove them wrong.
Since the fall his condition continued to decline and about 3 weeks ago Laurent was admitted to the hospital as he had contracted pneumonia. This past week Laurent took a turn for the worst and was moved into palliative care. I got to sit with him a couple times this week, even as recently yesterday. It is my very sad duty to tell everyone that Laurent passed away peacefully this afternoon surrounded by loved ones.
I have counted Laurent among my closest friends and will miss him dearly. He was a larger than life character and will leave a large whole in many people's lives. One of his loves was this hobby of sports cards and he loved his bi-annual trips to Toronto where he got to spend time with a lot of you. He loved wheeling and dealing and the challenge of coming out ahead on every deal he made, well at least he felt he did. Even as he was terribly ill he made a point of going to the Toronto show this past fall. I begged him not to go because I thought he wasn't strong enough but he knew what was coming and told me he had to go because it may have been his last chance to say goodbye to some friends and he was right.
So please take a moment, those of you who knew him, to remember him. Whether he made you laugh, made you angry, got the better of you in a deal, he thought of all his "card buddies" very fondly. Please keep his memory in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for reading this,
Sean Sandler

I am saddened to hear about this. Please give my condolences to his family.

Wow. Sorry to hear about this. I wish the best for his family and thank you for bringing this to the attention of his hobby friends.

He will be missed.

Extremely sad to have learned this news earlier today. Laurent was one of the great characters in our hobby and someone I considered as a friend. I will certainly miss seeing him at Expo, walking up the aisle towards my booth and then slapping a hearty handshake and big hug on me. I will especially miss the late Friday night steak dinners with him at the Keg. Lots of great memories, only a shame there will be no more. I am very thankful he made the trip to Fall Expo so many of us could see him again and we knew at the time that it may be the last time so there were lots of tears and lots of hugs.

My heart goes out to his family and his friends. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to watch his battle with this unforgiving cancer. I am glad to hear he fought as hard as he could, yet sad too.

You will be missed big man. We will be thinking of you and toasting to you for many years to come.

*I feel lucky to have a short video of him that he texted to me just over 4 years ago. It makes me laugh every time I watch it, which I have done several times today. The pic above is the first frame from that video.

I'm sad to hear this. Laurent was always cool with me and while I didn't have the friendship most of you shared with him, it's tough knowing that a familiar face won't be seen at the Expo again. My condolences to his family and to his friends.

Very sad to hear that another member of the HI family has left us. Sincere condolences to Laurent's family.
RIP.
Dan.

I don't think I ever had the chance to talk to Laurent in person but this hobby is one big family. My thought's and Prayers go out to his Family and Friends...

RIP in Paradise Laurent ,

Wow, I am beyond sad to hear this. Laurent was such a great person. My fondest memory of him was when I flew to Montreal with a friend and he came to pick us up at the hotel in his 2 seater Ferrari. LOL, he forgot there was 2 of us coming. We laughed it off and took a cab to his place and from there jumped in his Escalade and continued on to the card shops in Montreal and Laval. Finally ending up at Quecan? (I think thats the name) to open 85 cases of that years Cup. (Yes you read that right, 85 cases)

Anyways, rest in peace my friend! Thanks for the memories.

I dealt with Laurent on more then a few occasions , He was a true collector , from his Superbowl ring , Cars , Watches ,etc.... , but his true love was Hockey.

condolences to his family.

Sad to hear the news of someone I met both in Montreal and at Expo. A great collector and exhibitor that will be missed.
RIP Laurent

Never nice hearing one of our own has passed on. My thoughts are with his family and close friends. May he RIP.

Sean.

this truly is a sad day and my condolences to his family and friends..... I seen Laurent at so many expos walking around and even behind the booth as a dealer in the infamous money pit.......... even though we never made a deal in cards we did share some laughters and some conversations.

I seen him at last expo and heard about the terrible news and was hoping that he would fight the terrible disease and kick its ***............... RIP Laurent , You will be missed

I didn't know him as well as others but I did have the occasional chat with him.
One that comes to mind which makes me laugh to this day.

Laurent was buying a card off a guy in front of me.
All I know is that 30 seconds later, Laurent looks up at me and says.
"Hey Fawad, Give me change for this $1000 bill".

I had no idea what to say. Given that I had prolly less than $250 in my pocket at the time. I just stared at him and he was staring at me. All I did was throw my hands in the air and say
"Sorry man, I am fresh out of change"

He looked at me as if he was in the twilight zone and I shared that memory with Jeremy later that evening. Then I learned who Fawad was. lol

It's always sad to hear about people passing on. We are getting to that age, I am in my 40's where I am starting to hear about this more and more. So sad.

I met Laurent going back to 2008-09, he was such a great person with a larger then life personality. I will never forget the long talks and texts over the years we used to Have about the hobby and also more times then not about life....
Ha was the type of person that people would be drawn to and my life is better having know him along with the rest of my family.

We did lots of deals over the years and loved our meeting spot at the halfway point between toronto and montreal at the kingston keg. Even though it would have been cheaper and eaiser to just ship and do deals online it was always worth the drive and spend time with him cause after all the thing that makes this hobby so special is the people that are in it. And yesterday we lost a person that will leave a big hole in this hobby. Laurent may your legacy live on, my thoughts and prayers go out to your family
Danny

I had some deals with him over the years. We seemed to compete for some of the same cards. He was a shrewd negotiator with a big personality. He will be missed at the expos. My condolences to his family.
