Leaf Ceo Q&a W/ Collectors On Eichel Exclusive

Thanks for the feedback....

#1- 1970's football cards were not licensed by the NFL (look for LOGOS?)... Yet, they are rookies.... I consider the whole TRUE RC moniker brainwashing by licensees... YOU are the collector. YOU get to decide which card is a players best.

#2- We reached out to UD before they signed Connor and promoted a NO EXCLUSIVES position. They did NOT agree to do so. I would still agree to no exclusives if UD would... Think they would agree to do so?

#3- Lastly, you will still have UD rookies to collect.... they just may not be signed... (FYI, I reached out to UD to discuss Eichel and they had no interest)

If they don't care should you?
BG

Can you elaborate on the bolded portion of your answer? You reached out to UD to discuss Eichel in what way?

I don't think it would be fair to elaborate at this time, except to say I have made efforts to discuss Eichel / McDavid situation and it was met with a lack of interest.

In other words, "we'll give you some Eichel autos for some McDavid autos"?

You don't have to answer that

And thank you for the answer on the memorabilia cards

First, congratulations.
Second, as a fan of vintage and a dedicated player collector my stake is limited in this but while we have you..

With regards to logo/uniform usage. Can you (will you) show, in this case, shots of Eichel in a Sabres uniform? ie. Unairbrushed shots but angles showing the player clearly in a Sabres/NHL uni without the logo visible?

Can the teams colours be used to accent the designs? Blue and Yellow to give the feel of a Buffalo issue if you know what I mean. Think 1984-85 OPC for example. One of the best designs that did not feature a logo

Speaking of logos. Are there any that you CAN use? Especially for vintage releases: WHA, defunct NHL teams, Team Canada, Team USA etc.?

Lastly, will we see throwback, niche releases like the former Between The Pipes, The Year in Hockey, etc in multipack form?

Thanks again for your time and consideration

Great questions...

1> yes, we only airbrush when necessary form a legal standpoint...
2> Love the 84-85 opc set... good thoughts...
3> possible, but cannot commit to what at this point.

Not sure if you can comment on this but this situation has got me thinking, did Leaf reach out to any of the other top 20 draft picks minus McDavid to see if they wanted to sign an exclusive?

What would stop Leaf or another company if they had the resources and the players willingness to sign to sign multiple exclusives?

Well, I do care because it's the only opportunity to grab what the hobby will label as RC's. I understand the whole "collect what you want" stuff, but regardless of if I think an Eichel card is cool it will never be labeled as a rookie card. I'd like autographs that represent my team that I'm a fan of. Not a picture of Jack Eichel where the Sabres logo can't be displayed, etc. I'm a big Sabres fan and like Sabres cards. Unfortunately this just won't be the same for me.

Love your response to #1. Indeed, two of the biggest football "RC's" ever - Montana and Payton Topps - were unlicensed!

Are you hoping that this will bring a new group to your products? I think ITG/Leaf is viewed as mostly star/vintage driven at this point. Will you be trying a rookie driven product now?

Since Eichel is exclusive to Leaf, does that mean all his autos will be on card autos? Or will there still be sticker autos?

Also a little off topic, but I seen the NFL jersey release that Leaf had done. Any plans on a hockey version? or would there be licensing issues with that?

Honestly, Eichel was our target. We did not even have a conversation with McDavid about an exclusive. We had no intention of signing anyone until UD made the decisions they made...

Does Leaf intend to run for a full NHL license in the future?

If the deal was fair and allowed us to continue providing good value, yes.
If the deal forced us to make products that did not provide adequate value, no.

Totally understand your position... however, the definition of an RC is complete garbage frankly.. BG
