Leaf Player photo options?

But the same logic applies to the questions. You've summarized my entire time on this board as being a ITG/Leaf basher. If you, a high level card exec can somehow have the time to remember the individual dissidence on a specific website than I would have to say that the reception of your product must be pretty positive overall.

It has been positive yes! I actually didn't remember, I just checked past posts you have been involved in. Nothing sinister, I didn't take down notes in the past.

Yes, most of your displeasure revolved around ITG vault and some other after market issues. Duly noted.

So send a photographer all over to get casual photos of the player? That'll keep costs down... Should they also take photos at cemeteries just so they can get up to date photos of vintage players, which Leaf remains keen on including?

We need to start a TMZ for hockey players. Get them while they're filling gas or ordering coffee or Christmas tree shopping.

"Hey Phil Kessel tell us what it was like to win a Cup."
"Hey Phil Kessel isn't it great to be out of Toronto?"
"Hey Phil Kessel don't you miss those hot dogs?"
"Hey Phil Kessel why did the HBK line break up last night? Who hurt you?"
"Hey Phil Kessel why does your Starbucks cup say 'Fill'?"

I've exchanged emails with Dr. Price personally for several years. ITG/BAP was my favorite product for years. The only "bashing" I've done on this board in regards to that company is a vault release that was a slap in the face to collectors who spent thousands of dollars chasing hard to find inserts of their favorite players.

Is this a forum to discuss the hobby or an advertising platform for Leaf cards? I find it interesting that a post in a several page thread was made into its own thread. Seems to me either one of the mods agree with my position or you've requested to address this position in its own thread.

I'm pretty sure this turned into its own thread after the posts kinda hijacked the other thread completely. I'm not sure why we're on this topic. We all know the struggles Leaf/ITG have with the limited amount of images they can use without the NHL/PA license. They do what they can with what they have to work with. I much prefer head shots or the back of a jersey over a full body shot that is airbrushed. And the suggestion that they hire a photographer to take pictures of these guys in street clothes is ridiculous

Don't find it too interesting William. A handful of off topic posts were removed from one thread into their own to keep the two discussions separate.

Trust me it wasn't because Gregg asked for anything or because any mod agrees with your position.

Its only ridiculous because you've accepted lack of innovation in the hobby. And to your point of preferring jersey backs to player head shots doesn't address continuity. In my example 7 of 8 players featured a headshot, using Dryden at that point was a poor choice.

Lol. Pictures of players in street clothes is innovative? It's been done before and it was terrible. This will be my last post on this subject. You seem like that kid in school who just wants to pick a fight with everyone in class lol

my 4 cents.

-I don't care about the air brushing, I understand why it has to be done.
-I wouldn't want to see a hockey product with people in street clothes, especially a high end product.
"On the front of this card is an authentic piece of memorabilia worn by Sidney Crosby. Photo taken in Wal-Mart"
-That card with all the goalies on it that was posted earlier. I look at the memorabilia pieces mostly, the players are just part of the background. That is how a memorabilia card is suppose to work isn't it?
-I had a fourth point, but I forgot what it was.

Funny, we actually have cropped our images much tighter the last few products to lessen the airbrushing situation, especially with upcoming Ultimate.

I really like the new close-up cropping you've done for the newer releases. And I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Lumber Kings!

Personally I'm not a fan of using street clothes photos in any product.

Is it just the logos/patches that aren't allowed? Are numbers with team colours allowed? Is it any part of the logo that isn't allowed? Player names? Partial or illegible?

There are some pictures where the logo isn't shown due to the player's positioning. Or close ups (i.e. on the bench, penalty box, etc)

Or for patch cards, would it look good to have it over where it needs to be airbrushed? So right where the logo is supposed to be, the card has a GU part of the logo. Even if it's a jersey card, have a swatch the colour of the logo. Or have it spell out something like 11/12 UD Authentic Fabrics. Can the cut out be the shape of the logo? Player's initials or number? Do something that can combine with the teams sets. For retired players, have year that they won cups, or HHOF year, etc.

So for team sets, there could be 5 players from the Kings/Wings, that spell it out KINGS/WINGS, and the swatch would be over where the logo would be. It would make the airbrushing less noticeable.

just my 2 pennies.

Its your product so I would hope you feel that way. Heres a perfect example of what my post was talking about. Again, I didn't start a thread someone turned my post into a thread for some reason.

Dryden besides not even being pictured basically shares no affiliation with the other players selected. Really didn't even play in the same era and only played in the league for one season with any of the goalies pictured.

It seems to make more sense not to include a player if you don't even have the rights to use their photograph especially on a 1/1 piece where 7 of the 8 players use photos.

In this example, personally, I would like the players to be cropped higher on the jersey (or zoomed in a bit more), so that it looks like the jersey ends before the logo, instead of looking like the logo was air brushed. Or strategically place the players so that it looks like it naturally blocks out the other player's logo. Or the swatch to block the logo.

Plante, Sawchuk and Durnan's photos look the most awkward for me. The Dryden jersey needs to be addressed differently somehow, but I've got no ideas.

For players that don't allow their image to be used, does that include masks? Sketch cards?

I think it would be a great idea to feature players in photos not wearing their jerseys (e.g. at award ceremonies) to spice things up. Though I have noticed that Leaf is doing a better job of reducing airbrushing which is nice to see.

Seems to be a pretty standard here for people to post criticism of a card company and then a bunch of other people will respond by blowing it out of proportion and call someone a Leaf-hater or UD-hater, etc... It's just cardboard folks, relax please.

I like the idea of putting swatches in place of the airbrushed logo a lot! I think that would make a pretty cool card.

Hey guys, that is actually something we looked at but the issue is the diecut has to be in the same spot for each card where getting images to line up with that just doesn't work for each image. I like the thinking though. I think the best option is just getting the NHL to let us use logos! :)
