Sportsnet.ca has learned that the Maple Leafs have acquired goalie Vesa Toskala & Mark Bell from the San Jose Sharks for the Leafs first and second-round picks in 2007 and a 2009 fourth-round pick..

If it comes to pass that the Bud's didn't give up any roster player's... Then IMO they made out very well!

A 1st and 2nd in a weak draft? YES!

We needed a #1 goalie and I believe Raycroft+Toskala can compete for that job. Hopefully Bell turns it around. He did score 25 2 years ago.

Toskala is $1.365M and Bell is $2M... very affordable.

I actually really like this deal. Essentially we got a starting goalie and a 2nd liner whos 26 for a 1st in a weak draft and a 2nd in a weak draft.

Good move for once JFJ!
 
Bye Bye Raycroft, this might open it up for Toronto to sign Joseph as the back up. This is after Ferguson signed to Raycroft to a somewhat big contract. The man needs to be fired.
 
Ferguson is the same guy, who could not trade Anthropov for a bunch of pucks, then re-signs him to a 2 yr. contract, Bye Bye Fergie
 
The Leafs potentially gave up the rights to ANGELO ESPOSITO in this trade. Still a good trade I think. ESPOSITO was slated to go in the 10-15 pick range based on the so called "TSN Experts" I think Montreal picking before the Leafs would have taken ESPOSITO anyway.
 
JFR has really lost it this time. He unloaded Rask, has Pogge waiting in the wings and brings in another young Goalie for his draft picks. As for Bell, he is a head case that couldn't cut it in either Chicago or San Jose so how do you think he will do under the media scrutiny of Toronto?
 
Another goalie I was hoping the Bruins went after!
1st Giguere, now Toskala, who is left?
I don't believe Fernandez can do anything more than Thomas did last year. IMO all the elite(if you can call them that) goalies are now gone for the B's to pick from.
Oh well, let Rask start ;)
 
Sigh.............another bone head move. Don't JFJ get it. The leafs need to get better in front of the goalie. Welcome aboard Vesa I hope you have big broad shoulders and a really strong back, you will need it.

It pleases me to see JFJ give away a potential #1 goalie in Rask for Raycroft and then to trade a ton of picks for another goalie a year later.

And the Bobby Clarke award goes to JFJ. Clarke never could figure it out either. He kept trading for goalies that never worked out. Thump, thump, thump, thats the sound of another nail going into JFJ coffin.
 
I agree with some of the above. A great pickup for the leafs but goaltending wasn't their problem. Bell could be a first line winger on the leafs, that shows their problem completely. Nice pickup but some more scoring is what they actually need (not to mention a couple of d-men that actually play d)

Are you kidding me? Did you watch the Leafs play?

Raycroft had a .894 SV% (worse then any starter in the league) and your saying goaltending wasn't there problem?

Goaltending was 100% the Leafs weakest link. They averaged 7th least shots against and they were 27th in the league in goals against.

They show undoubtebdly that Raycroft was one of the worst goalies in the league.... check the goalie SV % charts... he's brutal!

I actually laugh that you say goaltending wasn't there problem but we need scoring. Ummmm, please see all Leaf message boards (we are all in agreement).

We were 27th in goals against and 7th in goals for... but no seriously, we need more scoring ahead of a goaltender :rolleyes:

Edit: And whats more... had we signed Smyth this offseason you would have heard, "sure he's a good player but the Leafs need to stop the goals against more".

Take it from me, a guy that has watched almost every Leaf game for 5 years running, goaltending was absolutely positively 150% the Leafs biggest problem last year.

Hes is doing exactly the right thing with Pogge. Goalies don't generally break in as soon as out players they need some time to develop. I say they take their time with him. Which is another decent reason to get rid of Rask, maybe they could ahve gotten someone better then Raycroft but it is pretty hard to develop to guys for the same position.
Leave Pogge in the minors for another year then give the kid a chance.

I agree that top line wingers are a problem also...

but man TRUST me goaltending is there problem. Please view the links I showed you... it breaks it down very easily. Have a look....

Raycroft is absolutely brutal. He was easily the teams weakest link. His glove hand is abysmal. I'm not going to argue this with you as I am 100% confident that I am right. I've never felt so strongly about an issue with the team to be honest. We allowed less shots then the freakin Wild (who are a trap team) yet are 27th in goals against!

As my 6 year old could be heard saying "Razor can't stop a beach ball" :cool:

Top Shelf its in, very poor glove.

Having said that Raycroft was just okay, the problem is that he doesn't seem to have the ability to make tha "BIG" save. Also, I was at 10 games last year and not once, did the fans chant his name or support him like Cujo, Potvin, Belfour....Any talk of Razor was how he was a 1 year wonder.
 
Ya, stats say it all. Stats are for those that don't actually watch games. There were games he was brutal but stats won't make me change my mind.

I agree... I go on countless Leaf message boards, watch 80+ games a year, tape games for crying out loud and 80% of Leaf fans have all mutually agreed that Raycroft stinks. It took time for some people to admit it, but you have to call a spade a spade here.

His glove hand is that of a junior B's glove hand. Check the chart I showed you..... his glove hand is far below league avg for crying out loud.
