Leafs acquire Toskala

No offence, but when you have the vast majority of Leaf nation clamoring for Raycrofts head on a stick, the GM just trades a 1st round pick for a goalie one year after getting Raycroft in the first place, every stat in the world goes against you (32nd in GAA 35% in SV%), , and 2 Leaf fans in this thread alone back to back ask you if your kidding, then your obviously pretty far off on this one.

Stats just support what I'm saying... Having watched basically every game this year I think I have a very fair opinion and probably better ability to pass judgement then you do.

Time will tell, but I still think the problem is deeper than the net meaning dmen who can't play d. so many times last year teams had forever to pick their spots. Do I think Toskala is an upgrade, yes, but having a backup at Raycrofts salary is going to kill them, plain and simple. Should have given him another year rather than throw away next year with the same old, same old.

Do you know how much Raycroft makes?

We have Raycroft ($2M) + Toskala ($1.375M) for a combined cap hit of $3.375 and thats going to kill us? Come on, I know everyone hates the Leafs but lets think logically here...

We are paying less for both our goalies combined then the Sens pay for backup Gerber! ($3.7M). Emery is in for a huge raise (likely $3M or more). Huet makes more then both combined... so does Vokoun (5.7)...

What about Philly? They have Biron making $3.5M and Nitty making $1.225M totalling $4.725

We may not have the best goalies but we have a reasonable duo now and a MORE then affordable cap hit. I bet you if you add up both the starter+backup the Leafs have one of the cheapest duos in the league.

If you look at it another way he did free up more cap space to sign free agents. Not always a bad move if he puts the money to good use.

If leafs don't sign Toskala long term then what was the point? We will see what the salary will be soon enough.
 
The Leafs could have had Cherpanov and go into next season with two back-up goalies instead, duking it out to see who will play more. You Leaf fans can try and put whatever positive spin on this you want, but to the rest of us it is still hilarious

The Habs skipped him ... so did the Oilers... hell why don't you ask the other 16 teams why they didn't pick him?
 
Isn't cherepanov playing another year in Russia? Anyways, I am a big time leaf fan and dispise JFJ but I think he made a good move in picking up Toskala. Raycroft was a bust and proved he cannot be the starter on THIS team, granted the leafs D was nothing to write home about but that's why you need a solid goaltender to make up for the inefficiencies in the D and Raycroft isn't up to the task. Even having arguably the worst starting goaltender in the league the leafs still only missed the playoffs by 1 point. I think Toskala will be an improvement and lets face it the D can't get much worse so that equals the leafs squeaking in. Who knows maybe this guy turns out to be the next Kiprusoff and nobody will be talking then about the potential draft pick the leafs could have had.

Solid trade in my books and it's been a long time since I could say that about a JFJ move.
 
- The Flyers trade a 1st round pick for NEGOTIATION RIGHTS to Hartnell and Timonen, proceed to sign them to ludicris deals and are heralded as creative, ahead of the curve, great moves. Nobody questioned it.

- Today, the Blues just traded a first round pick for... NEGOTIATION RIGHTS to a 37 yr old Keith Tkachuk! Yes, thats right...

- Both Philly and St. Louis could have waited until Sunday to try and sign these guys but they wasted picks (1st rounders no less!).

- The Leafs trade a 1st (in the weakes draft in recent memory mind you) for who will become their starting goalie, is 47-19 in the last 2 seasons, is the best bang for your buck goalie in the entire league at $1.375M and is only 30 years old with potentially several good years left.... and people complain.

It's fickle Leaf fans and the hurdes of Leaf haters that find something to complain about for every move. Seriously, I hated the Rask for Raycroft deal. I'm on record as saying as much. This deal makes much more sense and I give JFJ credit for it.

Hi Piper, don't know you but your address says "Ottawa", I assume you cheer for Ottawa, so, remind me who was the back goalie for Emery? What was his salary? As I recall, he couldn't stop a beach ball, at least we know Toskala can coming from beautiful San Jose:p

I don't cheer for the Senators as most in the hockey collecting world know and my team has three goaltenders to choose from to start next season not one or zero. ;)

Now JFJ signs Clemmenson too. Let's see, JFJ already dumped Rask, Pogge is a bust so what is he trying to create this time, a three ring circus in the Leaf's crease for this coming season? :p

One thing that Toronto has always relied heavily upon espeically in the playoffs is a GREAT goalie. Donno if Raycroft could have done this single handedly. He is a lot younger than previous Leafs goalies like Joseph and Belfour.
I think it's great that Raycroft will now have a bit of competition through the reg season with Toskala to see who is the starter.
Will help both starting goalies to become better!
