Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently fired Brian Burke as general manager. Working on official confirmations.

Kypreos confirms - timing especially curious - although nothing MLSE does is surprising on any level. Yesterday, they hired a coach for Toronto FC that will apparently still play the rest of his season in England, but has no real coaching experience or certification...

I am somewhat disappointed. Even though Burke comes off as a tool he took a team with no prospects, nothing to trade and a pile of overpaid players and former buyouts. He has since landed some big names and the Marlies have some great young talent...lost in the Calder cup finals last year. When he first came in he said it was a 5 year plan and IMO it was starting to take shape. Oh well bring on the next GM that will survive for 2-3 years.

I bet they wanted Luongo and Burke didn't. It will be an interesting next few weeks.

haha brian burke got fired

it's about time the leafs saw the light,he was way too much old school ,wouldn't trust his rookies on the ice in key situations, kept playing those old washed up vetrans

This makes absolutely no sense though - the entire management/coaching in place are clear Burke loyalists - so they should also be out. There definitely is more to this...

Wondering if Luongo was a source for contention between ownership and Burke one way or another.

^^ i was thinking the same thing. he prob got fired as he was ready to pull the trigger on a Lu trade today haha

So I guess the Leafs are pretty much writing off this season on purpose. GM's are about to have a tough time as it is trying to fire up idle teams before the puck drops, now they have to find someone else and throw him right into a frantic mess of a shortened season. I'm not really surprised he got fired but why, WHY do they have to do it now? Drama? Attention? Gawd.

There are rumours floating around that this was not a "hockey" related issue, but a conduct issue.

Can anyone find more info?

Why are people shocked? He had a 5 year plan, and all 5 years are no playoffs. He's done. MLSE saw this season's schedule and knew they weren't going to make the playoffs. 5 straight years of no playoffs means 5 year plan was garbage. A least they made it to Jan still in playoff contention. Better than last year when they were eliminated in October when the puck dropped.

You heard it hear first, Leafs make playoffs and have a better record than Montreal...

Apparently, not fired but removed from GM duties and is now a senior advisor to the MLSE board. (Otherwise known as, damn it, you have a contract and we have to pay you anyways but don't come into the office)

Interesting to say the least.

Burke fired in Vancouver, replaced by Nonis. Nonis brings in Luongo.
