League's Best Announcer

I enjoy HNIC with Hughson with Craig Simpson as its a great announcing tandem together.

For Oilers telecasts, I'm quite used to Kevin Quinn and love some of his favorite sayings such as:

a) Hemsky with the puck, in the slot.....shot....scores!!!! Ales Hemmmsky!
b) Fernaaandoooooo Pisaniiiiiii
c) Andreeew CogLiAnoooooooo!
d) and my favorite.....OVERTIIIIIIIIIIMMMME.....WINNER !!!

I miss Dave Strader when he used to Announce the Red Wings game with Mickey Redmond many moons ago!

I liked Dave too - until I got used to Ken Daniels, He knows more about hockey than Starter ever will - both past history and juniors and IHL. I think he may be one of the better announcers around the league - at least of the younger guys.

The best play by play announcer I think I've ever heard for the sound of his voice and the way he capitivated his audience is hands down Jim Robson. He had one of those "Shut up and listen to me" voices when he play called. I was pretty sad to see him retire, but everybody's gotta retire sometime I guess :)

Right now...I'll agree with Ern and say Chris Cuthbert. The guy is so good at what he does that he could make senior shuffleboard into the most exciting sport to watch if he wanted to. I would put Hughson second, and being a complete homer, I'd put John Shorthouse 3rd...there's nobody else I've heard recently that calls a game better than Shorty...made better by the homer crutch of Tommy Larscheid sitting next to you screaming for an opposing team too many men on the ice penalty during the pre-game warmup.

I can't believe only one person has mentioned Doc Emrick!

Mike Emrick and Jim Hughson are by far my favourites right now. But noone will ever replace Danny Galivan, and **** Irvin. Or Canada CUP and Dan Kelly

Yep, all my favorites were listed in this post. I also liked Mike "Scratch my back with a hacksaw!" Lange, but not for a whole season. He was always fun for a few games here and there, though.

who was the guy that had the famous "he shoots and scores" for the penguins in the 90's. he was pretty good. john davidson and doc emerick are awesome when paired together, except i think they only get paired up for nationally televised games.

Mike Lange is the one. One of his better calls for Mario was "he beat him like a rented mule". He still does radio for the Pens.
My all time fav was Danny Gallivan for the Habs.He coined the phrase "cannonading drive" when Boom Boom Geoffrion fired a slap shot. Yes I think he also anointed Geoffrion as Boom Boom.
I enjoy Jeanneret because he keeps me interested in the game. Heck I remember when he started out doing "Bowling for Dollars" on local Buffalo TV. That's when he was Baddddddddddd.
Best guy today is Bob Miller for the Kings. With the way the Kings have performed for the past 4 years by just showing up for each game with a positive attitude he gets my vote

Best on the mic: Curryman

Di ck Irvin was sooooooooo Habs-biased it wasn't funny, just like Bob Cole is so Leafs-biased. However, Irvin was a legend and could call a great game. Cole's just a useless twit.

Jim Hughson used to bug the snot out of me, but I got used to him and eventually really enjoyed his game-calls. Sportsnet Pacific will miss him tremendously and he's a HUGE snag for CBC. Once you guys hear more of him you'll like him more too.

Shorty has a kind of whiney voice, but he knows his stuff and is a phenomenal hockey-minded caller.

But I have to agree with Ernie... Chris Cuthbert is fantastic. TSN snagging him when CBC let him go was the coup of the hockey world. Just wish TSN would broadcast more Canucks games! :)

Ed Whalen with the Flames.. Heh I remember going as a kid to the games sitting up in the nosebleeds bringing along a portable walkman so that I could tune in to listen to Ed Whalen call the game as I watched it live..

Didn't he start out doing Stampede Wresting in the 70's??

I can't believe no one even mentioned Jimmy Fox and Bob Miller. Two of the most knowledgeable and un-biased announcers in the league. If you have center ice you should listen to a few of their broadcasts. One of my favorite lines was in 03\04 The season opener in LA against Detroit. I was calling my dad with updates because he was late coming home from work. So I call him with about 3 seconds left to tell him that it's going into overtime, but when he answered the phone Yzerman had something different in mind. HE scored with (correct me if I'm wrong) less than a second left to play. Jim Fox said, "I hate to say it, but I'm going to...that hurts." Anyways...long story long, those are my two favorites.

P.S. I also like the extremely biased Mickey Redmond :D

In post #29 I said Bob Miller was the best of today's announcers but for different reasons. I also agree that he and Jimmy Fox go overboard on being unbiased but I've grown to accept that. Now if only the Kings could ice a competitive team all would be good.
