Licensing For Next Year 2014-15

On a different forum, there is a rumor thread that even Dr. Price has lent some insight to that we could very well be seeing an exclusive manufacturer again in hockey starting with the 14-15 and un-surprisingly it isn't going to be ITG.

What would everyone think if after four years of two major licensed companies, it goes back to just one company with an NHLPA license?
 
as someone that is a huge fan of continuity, it would suck if UD looses it.
 
Yup, if UD isn't that said exclusive license holder I'm out for good. I have yet to buy a Pannini product since returning to the hobby.
 
I'd say from a hobby collector perspective, I'd like to see both companies continue with the products that each manufacturer releases. It would give a more balanced attack of the market place and plus it would keep competition going strong.... my opinion but I give up trying to see how this will all work out and will accept whatever happens moving forward..


I'd surely miss the cup releases if that were the case. Should be interesting nonetheless.
 
Lots of rumblings going around and it seems to be pointing in the same direction. I guess really all we can do is wait until the official word but if the rumours are true it's going to mean the return of a lot of popular products that had to be shelved due to the limitations of the past agreement.

Several larger distributors we in NYC at the Toy Fair and the rumor that has come out of that encounter is that there is an exclusive and it is not Panini.

I guess it's easy to figure what that means to us.

Remember this is a rumor nothing more.

i wonder what that means to the wax pricing of the company that looses its license
 
At this point, UD would have more to lose by being squeezed out. I'm curious what the #s are like for their NCAA products in football and basketball, but they can't be anywhere near as profitable as the pro licensed sets.

The unfortunate side is what happens to guys like Karvin, Vegas and others who were in the hockey brand.
 
Rumour is the world that sticks out the most for me.

Considering panini has the only product geared to kids (panini hockey stickers), I hope this is just that - a rumour.

My question is this - was it not that long ago they invited ITG to the party (albeit, a limited number of products)? Why go from inviting everyone to having an exclusive? You would think the NHL & NHLPA get more exposure through multiple partnerships.

As a store owner, I want kid friendly products just like I want products that attract the entire spectrum of collectors.

My only issue is the inability to meet release dates (now we have 3 products releasing within a week which creates cash flow issues and takes the steam out of marketing opportunities) and why so many similar products (titanium, totally certified, SPGU)???
 
Hell yeah i hope its true.

I was one of the few that wasent thrilled about another card manufacturer, and most of my fears came to reality.

It was ok while it lasted i guess, ITG and UD raised the bar to offer more.

Other then retro anyone can think of a UD product that was heavilly dicounted 6-8 months after release ?

People where complaining about UD redemption and customer service, most where saying `bring on panini`, but the same people are still waiting for there 10/11 redemption or are complaining about the poor coalition.

My guess is that of the parties invited, one brought a bigger Brinks truck with them.
 
I dont think UD handled the exclusive well at all last time they had it. They took on more then they could handle and it showed with their customer service and redemptions. If it is them again, the same issues will arise.
I had to deal with them when they had the exclusive and it was like trying to deal with Rogers when on the phone with them.


I dont think exclusive deals work well at all. It is best to have some competition. It forces them to try and do better then the competitors.
 
To Stadium Sports point about Panini Stickers, I believe they produced the sticker sets during the UD exclusive years so unless the NHL / PA change the licensing terms for card manufacturing to broaden it to include stickers it wouldn't surprise me to see Panini carry on there. I for one would be sad if sticker sets went away completely, the OPC sets from 81-82 through 83-84 are what got me into the hobby as a youngster.
 
Well I have nothing against Panini or ITG actually have had a couple of cards of theirs in my collection. However if UD were to get out of the hockey market, I believe I would be done also. I am more of a Team/RC collector and stick to collecting the same set year after year, when possible.
