Looking for help on choosing a set to chase

I've been looking for an autographed set to put together, one that consists of HOFers and retired stars.

I've found a few that look interesting, although I"m sure there are many others. My thoughts initially:

1) 2001 Greats of the Game - About 90 cards, so a manageable size. Design isn't bad. A fair amount of filler. Don't see too many on Ebay, so I'm not sure how easy they might be to find.

2) 2006 Parkhurst - Lots of star power, but a huge number of cards. Seem to be plenty around, but I know it was a popular set with collectors.

3) 2011 Ultimate Collection Legends - Goes nicely with the 1997 UD Legends football auto set I'm working on, and a smaller number of cards. Not much in the way of scope, though, because it's so small.

Any thoughts on these or other sets? I've got football and basketball HOF/retired star sets on the go, and I'd like to start one in hockey.
 
Lots of very tough to find short prints and super short prints in GOTG and Parkhurst, those would take a lot of time, money, and patience to complete. The Ultimate Legends would be much easier and cheaper. I guess it depends on your budget and patience, if it was me I would go for GOTG. Good luck and have fun with it.

Another super sharp set with big names is the 04/05 Ultimate Collection Signatures, really nice cards in person.

This. Forget whatever book values exist for the GOTG set. If a short print shows up, it's warfare. We watched an Henri Richard auto sell in person at an auction here for almost $200, which floored us. I even sold a Bryan Trottier not too long ago for $40, which was about $25 more than I thought it was worth.

What about 04-05 Legendary Signatures? Does anybody know how tough the short prints are out of that set? I don't hear many complaints about the base auto set so I don't know how tough some of the SP autos are to get.
 
The Ultimate 1997 Legends set is the best option. It's recent, so some of the SP's are still showing up on the market, plus, like the football and basketball version, it is expected to continue for at least a three year cycle. It's definitely a challenging enough set....I've been stalled at about half the set for what seems like forever, and about ready to give up on the darn thing...LOL

Well, that bolded part really sucks. I hope they at least keep the numbers low so it's not a huge number of cards to chase.

The second football cycle only had 14 cards, but they had SPs of Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith and other so I haven't even bothered trying yet. And the 2011 College Legends has about 150 cards, so I'm just grabbing those on the cheap when I can.

Thanks for all the input so far, there are a lot of great sets out there. I think the Parkhurst just has too many to go after with everything else I'm working on, so I'll look at GOTG, Ultimate, and those Legendary Signatures.
 
Craig, I say you pick a set from 04-05. Either Legends Classics or Legendary Signatures. Both sets have SP's but I believe both are do-able. It should be a long enough chase to keep you occupied for at least a full year I'd say and both sets have awesome checklists. There's obviously a few Legends missing as there is in any set but I think either of these will hold their value over time as they both had/have a large amount of collectors. Back in 04-05 I made the decision to go after the Legends Classics set because I knew Bruce was doing the Legendary Signatures set and would outbid me for all the cards, lol. If you do decide on the Legendary Signatures I've got a couple of the SP's to get you started ;)

I hear you there - I didn't start the 1997 football Legends until 2011. Makes it tough to find some of the SPs because they're tucked in PCs, and nobody is busting wax.

Probably too high-value with all my other things on the go. Awesome cards, but that's a seriously pricey set.

I've got a few of them, but they're the non-hockey guys.

Like Rod above, I *really* like the Legends Classics from 04/05 - both the regular Classic Signatures and Signature Moments /125. I've sputtered out on collecting it for a while but every now and then pick up another piece. Might be too old and all the SP's have found a good home already, though, making it really tough to complete.

Or...how about the 03/04 Parkhurst Original 6 issues? Again, super tough but I don't know how much of a challenge you are looking for.

Finally - did you get my message on the other site?
