Haven't been hearing much about it.
Media doesn't like Luongo obviously.
Thomas gave up 3 Horrendous goals tonight and Panger still wants to say he played a good game.
if Luongo gave up those goals and lost the game like that then the media would be all over Luongo.

Kesler was MVP of Nashville series by far.
Henrik Sedin MVP of SJ series
Bieksa very strong playoffs.
Burrows great game in SCF but bit finger....

Luongo......one bad game against Chicago and has never looked back.
Incredible numbers, positioning, etc.
Gives the team confidence, and has played solidly. Hasn't given up a bad goal in a while.
It's a no brainer as far as I am concerned.
What do you guys think?

We were talking about this after our rec game last night - should Vancouver win, there are a number of people that could legitimately win the Conn Smythe - Kesler has been the media favorite for sure but has been average after the Nashville series, Daniel is leading the playoffs in goals and Henrik in points, Bieksa has been very good and I would argue that Hamhuis has been a rock with little press - Luongo has done everything that has been asked and more. Should Vancouver win, I think there are a lot of candidates.

Should Boston win - there is one. Tim Thomas

well seeing as the playoffs aren't over yet...i'de wait...

Thomas is pretty much the only reason Boston is in the playoffs...he's deserving enough as well

Luongo was largely at fault for the almost-lost-series against Chicago

Though I do believe he would win it

Definitely agree that Thomas is the MVP although Krejci/Lucic/Horton line,.,....mainly Krejci are also in the mix.

Lou had one bad game against Chicago and came back stronger than ever.
I am sur ehtat Toews went scoreless in a game LOL. Conn Smythe is for playoff MVP and Luongo is the Canucks. Of course with any winning team there will be lot sof candidates and all of the guys mentioned above have played a huge role in one series or another. But overall....Luongo is it.

I never thought he got the media attention he deserved in Nashville. He gave up bad goals and the media magnified that. Rinne would be caught out of position and either make a spectacular save recovering or give up a goal. Yet all anyone wanted to say was rinne this, rinne that, etc.
But in reality when you look at the goalie numbers from that series...Luongo was the better goalie. Been that way all series. Niemi this, Niemi that. Never his fault. blah blah. Now it's Thomas this and Thomas that.
I LOVE Thomas. He plays so hard, is a likable guy for media members and fans alike. But he gave up 3 bad goals tonight. If boston wins, I agree Thomas will be a main reason why and if they win because of him, no brainer as well as no other Bruin....even Krejci or Horton with OT goals has been more important to his team.
Just my opinion.

......:dizzy:

I agree he has played spectacular, but he was not the MVP during that series...thats just my opinion. I still think he has been phenominal in the playoffs overall and been a main reason they got where they are

Vancouver has many potential candidates, and Lu is definately near the top of the list.

As far as boston goes...sure the top line has come up big at times, I just dont think we would be anywhere near where we are, if not for Thomas. But yes, arguably, Krejci, Bergeron, and Horton have all been big in this run as well

As much as i'd like to see it, I don't think it happens. The world like to rag on Luongo. He is the Rodney Dangerfield of the NHL. When he wins, it's because his team scores a lot, or he has great defense. When he faces 40 shots and loses 1-0, it's because he screwed up. Every mistake he does is magnified, while most of the amazing play he does gets swept under the rug. You can pick out pretty much any stat (and he's usually among the tops in the league), and people find reasons to say the stats lie. It is sad, but true.

I honestly don't know who i would pick though. Every series for the Canucks seems to have a different hero. As for the Bruins...they have Thomas and Hornton being their "heroes" I guess, with Thomas leading the way. Without him, the Bruins are out of the playoffs over a month ago.

Right now, even if the Canucks win the Cup, I think Thomas wins ala Ron Hextall many moons ago.

Dude. Not a friggin chance of this!!! He's played well but not better than Luongo so why would he win it over Luongo who has outplayed him??
But perfect example of what Lou is up against.
It's funny that when Luongo was on Florida and they sucked and he lost 8 billion games and made 30 saves a game at least ...he was considered a great goalie.
Now when he makes 30 saves and wins....he's not? Why?
Because of the media. It's the power of the media.
Let's face it. His 2 years as captain where the media made him out to be an arrogant guy who blamed his teammates is why he isn't talked about the way he should.

Luongo has been great! He has always been money in playoffs when he plays against someone else than Chicago :giggity:

Career Playoff Stats against teams other than Chicago:
35 GP, 23 W, 12 L, .936 Sv%, 1.90 GAA.

I think that if he can continue to limit the Bruins to under 2 goals a game for the remainder of the series it will end up being him who earns the Conn Smythe. As has been stated the Canucks have a great pool of guys that have stepped up in key moments and situations to help the team win. Kesler, Bieksa, Burrows, the Sedins - all have been excellent on a rotational basis, stepping up at times and then having someone else take on that role. But Luongo has been very quietly consistent. He's got 3 SO's, a sparkling 2.16 GAA, and a SV% of .928. Those are great numbers through 20 games (19 starts). From round two onwards, he has only allowed 4 goals against in a game twice. I think it could still be anybody, but I would put Luongo in front-runner status.

Luongo,Conn Smythe.Hardly!!!He's played well no doubt
but he hasn't exactly had to stand on his head to often.
He probably will win if and when Van City is done toying
with Boston.Personally,I'd give it to Bieksa for such a solid
playoffs.Let's face it.This team is so stacked and efficient
in front of Bobby Lou they'd make "RED-LIGHT" Racicot look
like a Conn Smythe winner.They're 3rd and 4th lines are a lot
of teams 1st line. They're just so damn deep and talented. That's
just my opinion.

Is the series over? Did miss 2 games? Seriously though the Bruins could just as easily be up 2-0. I will wait to give my vote, IMO the Sedins and Kesler are leading for the Nucks, Thomas and Horton are a head for the Bruins. A lot can happen yet.

They could be, but they're not.

It's all idle speculation and such now, but hey it's fun and gives us something to talk about on the off-days. Which is good, since this is a discussion board and all. :)

Even if the Canucks win I don`t see Luo winning the MVP. His team has played great in front of him and I don`t think he has been great. I think Kevin Bieksa has been great as have the twins and Kesler.

Its a triple edged sword.

Luongo probably doesnt have to play his best game for the canucks to win. Nor do I think he has really proven anything due to the team in front of him. I am not knocking on Luongo at all, but think about the RedWings of the 90s. Could the Wings have won without Osgood despite his respectable record and stats? The answer is yes, the wings could have won with Lidstrom as their goalie...

At the same time, there is no one canucks forward who is carrying their team (like StLouis did to tampa)

That being said, without anyone 'carrying' the team offensively it leads the way for the last line of defense to steal the award based on stats alone. Luongo's stat line is awesome, and I think we might be able to ignore the fact that he has not really been tested too much.

Finally, just a thought, how nasty would it be for Daniel to win the regular season MVP and Henrik to win the playoff MVP? Media field day?

It is just curious as to this train of thought that people use. Why did Fleury get so much credit when Pittsburgh won? The Pens obviously could have won without him. Right? So he's obviously not a top flight goalie, right?

Anyways I've watched every Canucks playoff game and does Luongo give up a bad goal more frequently than some? For sure. Is he an elite goalie? For sure. From what I've seen he has the ability to make tough saves look easy. And to say he hasn't been tested is to ignore what he actually has accomplished. In the words of Dennis Miller: That's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

I think we might be able to ignore the fact that he has not really been tested too much.
yeah, see I don't know why you would think that. Ask SJ if they tested him much. What did they throw like 56 shots his way in the OT win?

In this series he has faced 66 shots and has a shutout and 2 goals against.
Thomas has faced 67 shots and given up 4 goals.

All 4 goals that Thomas gave up, would be classified as BAD goals if Luongo gave them up. All 4. On the Torres he was waaaay out. The Burrows game winner was a horrible decision to lunge out at him. Burrows first goal....c'mon....any NHL goalie would be pissed to let that one squeek in from that angle. And the goal by Sedin he had no clue where the puck was and flopped.

It's pretty obvious that Thomas and Luongo are great goalies but I'd have to say that most GM's when given a choice would take Loungo ahead of Thomas.
That being said, there is a lot of series left and Boston has come close to winning both games. Could end up going back to Vancouver 2-2.
We shall see!!

unless luongo shuts out boston in games 3 and 4 by making remarkable saves, he WONT win the conn smythe.

as most ppl here know, i AM the biggest Luongo HATER in the world. i mean i actually hate that greaseball but, i havent complained or criticized his play these playoffs (mainly cuz he hasnt deserved it) and its been working so i wont.

with that out of the way, here are my arguments as to WHY he WONT and SHOULDNT win the conn smythe up to this point now.

unlike previous goalies who have won the conn, luongo hasnt stolen many games. hes stolen exactly 3 games. games 4 and 5 vs SJ and game 1 vs the bruins.

besides the 3 games mentioned above, luongo has hardly been the reason why the nucks have won the other games. he was merely a footnote. im not saying he didnt play well, because he did, but the team in front of him did their job and played REAL well.

luongo has Edler, Ehrhoff, Bieksa, Rome, Hamhuis, Salo, tanev, ballard. any goalie in the league would want that front 6 playing in front of them. ultimately though, the whole team has been playing VERY good in the post season. it is amazing at times, how this team, forwards, defense and goal, have had such control over opposing teams.

you can argue numbers all you want. yes he has amazing SV% and GAA numbers, but like i said the other night in chat, those numbers are somewhat skewed.

quantity of shots does not = quality of shots which does not = quality saves.

I think Luongo will be strongly considered based on his play in the SCF's. You have to remember who is voting. A bunch of the votes are coming out east, and most didn't really bother watching Canucks rounds 1, 2, 3. They'll just look at his numbers in the finals, double check the stats since game 6 of the Chicago series.

Kesler should be one of the favorites IMO, but Burrows is making more of an impact in the SCFs. Same with the Sedins.

I don't know why everyone is raving about Bieksa's play. I think he's been okay, but not Conn Smythe material. I think he's looks better b/c of Hamhuis.
