09/10 Black Trophy Cut - Maurice Richard 1/1

I'm happy to have pulled this today from a box of 09/10 Black but there's something about the card that makes me think it could have been done a bit "better". You decide.

So, off to a good start huh?

If you've been collecting long enough you know where his auto is from. Now, I realize Maurice isn't exactly available for signings right now but recycling an autograph like this really makes me wonder. I guess they've done this before in other sets but something about it just bugs me.

My scan is watermarked since it will probably go to that other place. Drop me a line if interested.

Thanks!

" (even if UD cheaped out on the Rocket auto)"

Yep that's it. On the other hand this looks like a way better pull than I originally thought so woo hoo!

Personally I would rather they use a unnumbered back stock that way then sending them out as a redemption replacement.

As much as I slag UDs decision making over the past few years, this is a very good idea IMO...they took backstock and cut it up to get the autograph and put it into this card. If you were someone sitting on backstock of cards you couldn't do anything with (this is the one /25...releasing it as a buyback would make no sense and would anger the masses), this would be the next best idea.

I'll admit, I was kinda thinking "why would they do that?" but when you stop and think about it, it's better than shredding the card and much better than releasing it into the marketplace unnumbered (09/25 anyone?).

Triple B, I think you're right on. They most likely didn't have a lot of great options with an older card like that. And for all we know the card was damaged in some way. This really would be the next best idea.

I don't know but I think it's a shame that they cut that card up, basically cutting Mr. Richards head off the of the original card to manufacture this card. With the amount of Rocket autos out there I'm sure Upper Deck could have found another signature to use. As for the Retro card from their stock pile they could have foil stamped in some manner, or embedded it as a whole into another card making a unique one of one. What they have done here almost comes across as sacrilege cutting off Monsieur Richards head. That's just my opinion though. -Mike

I can\t believe they would do that! Not because the original auto is so rare (or that I need it for a set I am doing) but because it is so freaking UGLY! TheRE ARE LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF RICHARD'S AUTOGRAPHED CHEQUES FROM HIS FISHING COMPANY OUT THERE! Then, at least, it looks like a cut auto.

You know what, ITG should go and buy some Gretzky auto cards and put them in their sets. Yes! That is the ticket.

Upper Deck fools....
