Magic Johnson Faked AIDS?!?

A talk-radio duo in Minneapolis claimed on the air that former NBA star Magic Johnson faked having AIDS.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, during a Wednesday broadcast KTLK Radio personalities Chris Baker asked Langdon Perry, "You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?" Perry responded, "I'm convinced that Magic faked AIDS."

Baker added, "Yeah, me too."

Perry then said: "It falls apart when you get into motivation. I'm not sure why, but I'm pretty sure he faked AIDS. ... Cause he's the only cured AIDS guy ever."

Johnson released a statement Thursday criticizing Baker and Perry's claims.

"I am extremely disappointed in KTLK in Minneapolis," Johnson said in a statement to the Star Tribune. "I am outraged that Chris Baker and Langdon Perry would minimize such a serious and deadly issue.

"Millions are dying from HIV/AIDS, and the fact that they would make jokes about my status is unbelievable. Chris, Langdon and KTLK should use their power in a more positive light by encouraging people to get tested for this disease instead of making up such ridiculous lies."

Johnson revealed that he was HIV-positive in 1991, when he retired from the NBA. He returned to the league twice after his initial retirement and was a part of the 1992 U.S. basketball squad that won gold in Barcelona. He left basketball for good in 1996.

Editorial--> He appears to be around the same size as he was when he announced this. Don't HIV/AIDS victims lose alot of weight and then die? I have often wondered if he had HIV or not. But I'm not doctor.
 
Magic Johnson doesn't have AIDS...he's HIV Positive. There's a difference, which obviously these two buffoons are too stupid to realize.

My wife has been making this claim for years. No proof or anything, just it was always strange that he never progressed to full blown AIDS. It was almost like they needed a spokesperson to make everyone realize HIV/AIDS was real and deadly, so somehow Magic became the high profile person to show the world that it wasn't just a disease that only homosexual men became infected with. I think it also helped cut down on the criticism and negative publicity he was receiving for getting caught cheating on his wife with so many women.

Magic never had AIDS. He was HIV positive. I believe, he has since actually become HIV free though, and he is, to the best of my knowledge (assuming my previous assumption was correct) one of an insanely small percentage of HIV positive people to later become HIV free - basically, comparable odds to winning the lottery. I also believe he has lived roughly 3 or 4 times longer than the average person who is declared HIV positive.

Combine all that, with a general lack of comprehension about HIV/AIDS even today, and it is understandable that some people might suspect something other than what has been stated. Personally, I don't see what Magic would have gained by falsely claiming he had HIV though? A cover for cheating on his wife.....? Wow. That's a bit of a stretch. NBA players are notorious for that sort of behaviour (Wilt - "the man of 5,000 women" Chamberlain, Kobe "what happens in Colorado shoulda stayed in Colorado" Bryant, Shaquille "Kobe told on me " O'Neal, Michael "BUT I'M MICHAEL FREAKING JORDAN!" Jordan, and many, many others. I don't buy it.

Also, keep in mind that as a very very wealthy, and highly public figure, Magic had access to treatments, and a lifestyle that are not accesible to most HIV patients.
 
Just because you get HIV does not mean that it will develop into AIDS at any time...

I think any theories about faking it or using it to cover up transgressions, is, well, ignorant.

All true, but I thought Wilt was single?? Either way I do find it odd, but liek you said, hes got the money and status to get whats not normally available.
 
There are a lot of ignorant comments being made in this thread alone. One of them being that Magic cheated on his wife.

Magic and Cookie had an on and off relationship for 14 years before they got married one month before announcing his retirement. Get your facts straight dudes. Magic is NOT Kobe or Shaq.

Yes, maybe he shouldn't have done what he was doing, but at least get your facts straight if you are going to judge him. And remember that it was a different place and time.

Obviously I am biased as I am a Magic Johnson fan and everyone has a right to their own opinion. But at least make that opinion based on facts and not assumptions.

BTW - I will leave open the possibility that Magic cheated on his wife in the one month that they were married. As I do not know him personally nor was I watching his every move then. But c'mon, dude waited 14 years to marry this woman because he just wasn't sure he was ready for the commitment. He finally does and then cheats on her in a month.

Highly unlikely I would say.
