The Toronto Maple Leafs have shipped forward Jiri Tlusty to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for the rights to center Philippe Paradis.

Tlusty will report to Carolina's American Hockey League affiliate, the Albany River Rats.

''This trade gives us an opportunity to pick up a young, skilled forward who is further along in his development, albeit still in the development phase,'' president and general manager Jim Rutherford said. ''We feel that Jiri has a chance to be with the Hurricanes sooner than Philippe, who is a good, but still very young prospect.''

Tlusty, 21, is a former first round draft selection (13th overall) of the Maple Leafs. The Slany, Czech Republic, native has played in 74 career NHL regular-season games with the Maple Leafs, scoring 10 goals and earning 10 assists.

In 105 career AHL regular-season games with the Toronto Marlies, Tlusty scored 43 goals and 60 assists, including eight goals and seven assists in 19 games this season.

Paradis, 18, was the Hurricanes' first round draft pick (27th overall) in 2009.

In 45 games played this season with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Normandin, Quebec, native has 11 goals and 12 assists with a minus- 8 rating.

This trade is terrible. Absolutely terrible. Worse than awful. Why trade a player that has offensive upside for someone that is projected to be at best a 3rd liner????

The Leaf's have enough 3rd liners on their team, why add another one? I don't understand this move at all. Tlusty didn't get a fair shot in the NHL at all. He had a breakthrough season last year in the AHL and should have gotten an extended look this year, but he only played 2 games? I'm guessing Leaf's management simply doesn't like his game b/c they literally gave him away for nothing...

this just exemplifies how the maple leafs have no ability to develop youth. play them a few games, then trade or let them go for nothing, no chance given. a few examples, rask, antropov and boyes. im sure a huge list could be built. when was the last half decent home grown talent that played for the leafs. wendel clark and.... so far most of burke's moves have looked terrible and i think this guy is a tv hungry overrated gm. oh yeah, lets sign a guy with a potentially serious heart problem, he will be our savior. end of rant.

imo, kulemin overshadowed tlusty last year...he just got buried in the depth chart after that.

Kulemin is a better two way player than Tlusty is and that's the only reason he's still playing with the team. If not he would be buried in the minors too. As far as the Leaf's not developing players, they went with the Draft Smaft ideology for years and years and Burke isn't any different...Just a quick word on Gustavvson I think people need to relax with him being the savior of the team. He is a rookie and his stats are not that great. Sure, he has shown signs of brilliance but let's be realistic here b4 we anoint him the #1 guy here..

^ my thoughts exactly. Paradis has decent numbers in the Q right now 18 points in 20 so games, so maybe he isn't a total plugger..

I thought these are Paradis numbers, not too great for a 1st round pick.

anyone want to buy a pile of tlusty ygs? lol

I'm not a fan of this move, when tlusty was on (which was rare I'll admit) I enjoyed watching him go

^lol. He looked pretty decent during his last call up. He showed speed in the offensive zone and had a defensive awareness that I had never seen prior. His major problem which is an ongoing thing on the Leaf's is that he doesn't work to get into the tough areas to score....

the first move by burke to help soothe the leafs so far sub-par season. The leafs give up a kid who had 100 points in about 105 games. Thats just about a point a game. This kid they traded for better be half-decent. Toronto no matter who's in charge gives up to early on young players no matter how they may turn out. IE Brad Boyes.
Why would they even make that move? He didnt make the team, and yet blake is still playing everygame on the fourth line. Could have atleast called him up and seen if he had anything better to offer this season. Too bad.

Even as a Canes fan, I'm not too sure what to make of this. Tlusty is exciting to watch, but not much of a "team" enhancement. He'll certainly draw the attention of the Caniacs, but seems to be nothing more than a younger Samsonov.
