Folks,

I've noticed something about the Fleury Team Canada patch cards from 2011-12 The Cup. Check out this listing as an example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-12-The...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Check out the bottom patch, which is clearly from the 2010 Olympics Team Canada logo:

This logo was only worn during the 2010 Olympics because Hockey Canada wasn't allowed to use their usual logo so a new design was created for the tournament.

The problem? Fleury never played in the 2010 Olympics, he was third string behind Brodeur and Luongo. The closest he came to seeing game action was backing up Brodeur in the game against the Swiss, and those jerseys were auctioned off, but they wore the white jerseys that game and the top patch is clearly from a red jersey.

See the white jersey and how the "Canada" letters are in red:

The first patch in the eBay listing above has white lettering which would be found on the red jerseys. Also the Fleury Scripted Swatches from the Team Canada jersey are signed on white number patches that are also consistent with the red jerseys.

Unless there's something I'm missing, the jersey used in the Cup cards could not possibly be game-worn.

what if UD won the auctions? and also won some exhibition games?

Fleury only acted as a back-up for one game, the closest he came to playing, which was the game against the Swiss where Team Canada wore white jerseys. The patches above are taken from red jerseys.

Another example:

White number patch from a red Team Canada jersey. Even if UD did win the auction for the white back-up jersey (that never saw the ice in a game) the patches on these cards are from a red jersey.

I'm also not aware of any exhibition games, it's my recollection that after training camp they jumped right into the tournament. I can't find any record of exhibition games being played but if someone has a better memory than me please enlighten me.

In the training camp they wore the regular jersey's with the Hockey Canada logo.

The jersey Fleury wore vs the Swiss was auctioned off on Classic Auction last year. I went hard for it for my Fleury gamer collection.. I was outbid at an insane amount, so I wouldn't be shocked if it was UD that won it.

Edit... Here's the auction... breaks my heart to think it got cut up

It wasn't cut though, that's what I'm saying. The patches in the Cup cards are from a RED jersey, not the white one he wore as a back-up. When I have a chance to sit at a computer to do a better comparison i will but if you look at Fleury Canada patches in The Cup they are from a red jersey.

Note the red patch border outside of the gold and the hint of red jersey in the upper left corner of one patch. That's a RED jersey that I haven't been able to find any evidence of Fleury wearing in any sort of Olympic game.

That white jersey may still be alive :)

Thank god it may still be alive... When I first saw the patch cards of his in Ultimate using the Olympic style patches, I was a bit upset... There's still hope :D

.....Okay back on topic....

After some more digging, an update:

It appears Fleury wore a red Canada jersey during the Red/White game in August of 2009:

I'm still trying to find out whether or not those jerseys were auctioned off or sold, but it looks like at the very best this is an inter-squad worn jersey. Whether or not you consider that an official game-worn jersey is up to your own interpretation. To me it's a glorified practice jersey.

I'll keep looking to see if I can find any evidence of those Red/White game jerseys being available to the public. Until then I still don't trust this particular jersey.

EDIT:

Here it is,

http://www.sirc.ca/news_view.cfm?id=30490

All Red/White game equipment was auctioned off on eBay. There's a chance most of the Team Canada Olympic jerseys used in The Cup - Marleau, Toews, and Staal come to mind - could be from this inter-squad game as well but I don't think there's any way to tell the difference.

What does everyone think of these types of jerseys being used as "game-worn"? Either way actual Olympic tournament used jerseys would have been cooler.

With UD having a Team Canada license - it would not surprise me if they got access to jerseys as part of the deal directly from Hockey Canada

That's a definite possibility too for the other guys with Olympic patches in their Cup cards, nothing they could do with Fleury though as he never dressed in a red jersey other than that red/white game with the Hockey Canada logo. Did the team wear a new jersey for every game I wonder? There seemed to be a lot of auctions for game-used stuff around that time.

It would not surprise me if there was. It was likely - if previous Olympic tourneys are indicative - one set was obtained by the PA, one set used for the Hockey Canada fundraiser, and the players on Team Canada always get to keep the jersey for the last game they play in a tournament. Given the potential value of GU jerseys- particularly internationally and the business machine Hockey Canada is - I would not be surprised if there was one for every game and potentially extra jerseys for some players who want a fresh, dry jersey every period due to sweating.

Fleury did dress for the Swiss game - he had to dress for at least one game in the tournament in order to qualify for a medal - but that likely did come from the summer camp scrimmages
