Verified Trader,
Hello all,
The following cards are pickups from the months of March. I was overwhelmed with the quality of this months additions, so I hope everyone enjoys the show as much as I did in acquiring them. As many are aware, I'm chasing very limited sets that are now 14 years old, so it is a daunting challenge to say the least. The aide I've received from the different forums and facebook group members in finding these cards has been superb, so thank you to everyone who has provided information leading to a purchase. Now onto the show, and stay tuned for the top 15 at the end!
2005-06 UD PROMO #45 Alex Tanguay and #51 Rick Nash
I can't even remember the last time I was able to add anything to this set, which is generally unfamiliar to most. These cards were released in Beckett magazines and the set mirrored the 05/06 series 1 base set, and featured a red "PROMO" stamp across the front. These two cards now give me 64/200 of the set, or roughly 32% completion.
2005-06 Beehive Matte Matt Jones #152 (12/25)
Its been a while since I added any new Beehive Matte cards, particularly rookie cards. While fairly inexpensive, I really like the design as the borders literally pop, creating a 3-D effect. Happy with the addition to the set.
2005-06 MVP Gold Parallel #404 Dion Phaneuf (89/100) and #420 Jimmy Howard (4/100)
Its always great to add gold MVP parallels, especially rookies, whenever the opportunity arises. Generally inexpensive add-ons to any deal, I can't wait to see the set completed all together someday.
2005-06 UD NHL Generations Dual Jersey Arnott/Ryder D-AR
I like to add these cards only if they have a multicolored swatch on either of the two windows. With a blue/white piece on the Ryder, it fit the bill and I am happy to add it to my collection.
2005-06 Ice Cool Threads Hannu Toivonen CT-HT (3-colour)
Its not often a 3-colour version of any jersey card comes along, but I can always count on older Bruins cards to have a few 3-colour jersey swatches in every set. This Toivonen demonstrates an almost evenly split per colour.
2005-06 Ultimate Jersey Joe Thornton J-JO (204/250) (3-colour)
What was I saying about old Bruins cards and 3-colour swatches? Although this is technically a Sharks card, it features a nice eye-catching bright 3-colour Boston piece which really stands out against the darker San Jose colours.
2005-06 Powerplay Impact Rainbow Parallel #6 Kari Lehtonen (21-32)
These Powerplay parallels have been popping up for sale recently but unfortunately I missed out on both a Tanguay and Lemieux as I was preoccupied with settling into my new place. Fortunately for me, I was able to snag this nice Lehtonen for my set.
2005-06 UD Series 1 Jersey (2-colour) Joe Sakic, Grant Fuhr and Owen Nolan
Given how long I have chased multicolored swatched versions of the 2005-06 UD jerseys of both series 1 and 2, there isn't much out there these days that I am missing. Its very seldom that I come across one I am missing, let alone 3 in one month! The Sakic in particular was an astoninshing find for me, given that I wasn't aware any multicolored versions existed! The Fuhr as well is a very rare find given the jersey piece and I was surprised I didn't already own a Nolan, I guess it pays off to double check!
2005-06 Beehive Gold Parallels #29 Guerin, #36 Pronger, #60 Hasek, #110 Wolski RC, #127 Franzen RC, #132 Ballard RC
I very underrated set in my opinion, the Gold Beehive set mirrored the Red bordered set, and has a print run of about about 15-25 copies per card. Its hard to say because I have never found definitive proof of the print run, all I know is they are quite rare. There is a good mix of superstar players such as Pronger and Hasek along with a couple rookies, I can't ask for much more from this nice find.
2005-06 ITG Ultimate Memorabilia 6th Edition Ultimate Hero Single Silver Jersey Terry Sawchuk (10/20) (2-colour)
Now this is something you don't see everyday! A nice dual coloured jersey piece of Terry Sawchuk from the inaugural season of the Los Angeles Kings and the only season in which he donned their colours! An incredible addition to my collection in which my enthusiasm for hockey cards from the 05-06 season and vintage cards cross paths!
2001-02 Ultimate Vault UM2 Green Emblem Attic Bobby Hull 1/1
This card was actually a bonus card which was given to me by a seller for being a little delayed in shipping out my order. I didn't mind the package being delayed given the circumstances but they insisted. While not from the 05/06 year, I definitely had to display it here as I absolutely love those vintage pieces, especially the patches!
Now onto the cream of the crop, the top 15!
#15. 2005-06 The Cup Signature Patch SP-JT Jose Theodore (70/75) (3-colour)
This first card from this set to grace my collection, what makes this card particularly special is that it not only showcases a 3-colour patch, it also has a dual coloured jersey swatch in the background on the left hand side of the window. Its very rare that this occurs on any card so I'm happy to add this to the fold.
#14. The Cup #160 Matt Foy (50/199) (4-colour)
While not a household name, this Matt Foy rookie comes from one of the most iconic sets in modern hockey card history. What I love about this card, aside from the eye-catching patch, is the fact that the piece is easily identifiable on the jersey. It comes from the then Minnesota Wild shoulder patch as can be seen in the reference below.
#13. 2005-06 Trilogy Honorary Scripted Patches HSP-KL Kari Lehtonen (2/5) (4-colour)
Another first to my collection, its not often you come across these auto patches from the Trilogy release. And, again, I love when the patch pieces are easily identifiable as was the case with the Matt Foy. The Lehtonen is no different with the "beak" of the Thrashers logo being featured in the patch window.
#12. 2005-06 The Cup Emlems of Endorsements EE-PH Dion Phaneuf (12/15) (4-colour)
DOUBLE DION!! (old Pierre McGuire call reference). The dual 4-colour patch on this Phaneuf card is quite the unique find. Not often do you see 4-colours in both patch windows, and this would have been a highly sought after hit back in the days of its release.
#11. 2005-06 UD McDonald's NHL Goalie Gear MG2 Jocelyn Thibault (11/50) and MG7 Andrew Raycroft (12/50)
These goalie gear cards from McDonald's are few and far between finds, so to find two of them in the span of a month is very rare. Both feature what appear to be pad pieces based on the leather but it could be the glove or blocker as well. If anyone has any of these in their collections I'd love to add more if possible!
#10. 2005-06 UD Series 2 Patches Ryan Smyth (11/15) and Mike Modano (5/15)
Two great additions to bring my series 2 patch totals to 52/93 or 56% complete.
#9. 2005-06 UD Series 1 Patches Vincent Damphousse (2/15), Came Neely (5/15) and Scott Stevens (15/15)
Incredible finds for my set, paricularly the Damphousse as the piece is from 2002 All Star jersey, meaning the piece is from his nameplate "O" or "S" since they did not have sleeve numbers that year. The Neely doesn't pop up often and neither does a multicolored Stevens so I'm quite happy with those two additions. The three new patches give me 63/142 or 44% set completion. Man there are a ton of patches in this set!
#8. 2005-06 Hot Prospects En Fuego #32 Brenden Morrow 1/1
A card I had on my wish list and had inquired about in the past, I'm delighted to place it among my other base and shield En Fuego cards from the set.
#7. 2005-06 Victory Black Rookies #256 Jay McClement (1/5) and #296 Steve Bernier (4/5)
Not only one but two rookie cards from this incredibly limited and rare set! The hunt for this set never gets old and I don't think it ever will. It just makes each and ever add that much more special!
Now the top 6 if you have made it this far, this is where things get truly special...
#6. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate Memorabilia 6th Edition Emblem Attic Silver Patches Mahovlich (4/5), Richard (2/5), Ullman (3/5) and Worters (3/5)
These are absolutely incredible to view in person! Again, a rare occurrence where my love for vintage cards meets my quest for 05/06 cards. The vintage patch pieces literally pop out of the cards! 3-colour Canadiens patch pieces of Mahovlich and Henri Richard are no easy find, followed by a wonderfully stitched Red Wings patch of Ullman and finally a 2-colour Roy Worters New York Americans patch! I can't say I've ever added a New York Americans patch before!
#5. 2005-06 ITG Ultimate Memorabilia 6th Edition Emblem Attic Gold Patches Ullman (1/1) and Abel (1/1)
What could be better than the Emblem Attic Silver Patches /5? Well the Gold Patches 1/1 of course! Two incredible Vintage Red Wings pieces take the number 5 spot on the count down!
#4. 2005-06 UD High Glossy Visnovsky (8/10), Witt (2/10), Halpern (9/10), Dunham (6/10), Weiss (9/10), Theodore (9/10), Sanderson (8/10) and LeClair (3/10).
Its an absolute understatement to say that this month's trail for these cards got glowingly hot! It may be the most High Gloss cards added in any given month of collecting this set, with 8 new additions featured on this count down.... thus far. An added note about this bunch of HG cards is that both the Stephen Weiss and Geoff Sanderson cards are serial numbered to their matching uniform numbers in 9 and 8 respectively.
And now the top 3!!
#3. 2005-06 Victory Black #269 Dion Phaneuf RC (4/5)
Its fitting that this elusive Phaneuf rookie makes its appearance at number 3 on the count down. The first of its kind that I have ever seen, this card had previously been part of an extensive Phaneuf collection and I'm very fortunately to have been alerted to its listing, thanks Eric!
#2. 2005-06 UD High Glossy #204 Corey Perry RC (8/10)
One of the last big High Gloss rookie cards on the want list for my set, this card had been on my radar for a few years now. I figured I'd inquire about it again and the seller was willing to let it go. Now it becomes part of my enormous HG set project, giving me a new total of 194/487 card or 40% completion! I'm drawing close to the 200 mark, only 6 more to go!
And Number 1...
#1. 2005-06 Victory Black Parallel #115 Martin Brodeur (5/5)
Finds like this do not happen often. I had no leads or even a reference picture for this card, when it suddenly appeared in my messages! Sometimes it just happens that way haha. Victory black cards from this year are incredibly rare, though it may not seem like it from this post, and to find a superstar and Hall of Famer such as Brodeur is like finding a needle in a haystack! I'm beyond excited to add this unique find to the collection, and with this addition, I now have 63/300 or 21% of the set!
Well if you have made it this far, thank you for the time and please do not hesitate to contact me with information on cards I need or those you are looking to sell. Looking forward to what April will bring, comments/feedback are welcome and stay safe everyone!
