One of the greatest NHL players in history is calling it a career.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have called a 2pm et press conference where Mario Lemieux will announce his retirement.

Well sad day in the ole NHL. Especially in Pittsburgh.

Sad day for me... My all time favorite player, and one of the best to lace 'em up. Here's wishing him a happy retirement filled with much golf, and a successful sale of the Pens to a group committed to keeping them in Pittsburgh.

Such bad news, and on the day right after National Pie Day, too.
 
Oh well he hasnt played in so long Im used to him not being around anymore and just bummed out it had to end this way :(
 
This is a sad day for the hockey community in general, Mario is truly one of the classiest guys on and off the ice.

I know a lot of people are giving him a hard time for retiring and unretiring and such but I honestly don't care what he does . He has EARNED the right to do as he pleases when he sees fit to do so.

The man is easily one of the top 5 in NHL history and I feel so fortunate that I got see him play. He was/is an amazing talent.

Good luck to you Le Magnifique in whatever the future holds for you besides celebrity golf tournaments! =)
 
He was a very good player. I got to see him score a goal in one of his first games back in the NHL against the Bruins. I was happy to see him score. Even happier that the Bruins won that night. Am I a bad guy for saying good riddance?
 
Yes. :) I was fortunate enough to see him play several times at the old Capital Center. Always a treat...

But where is the outrage for National Pie Day!?!?!
 
I hate to see it happen even as a Wings fan, as a kid I never rooted for players who did not play in Detroit except one (no not mario he was a baseball player) but over time I started really respecting what players do and Mario is for sure one of those players like him or not you have to respect what he has done for the game of hockey. He is has been one of the top three players I have seen play the game since I can remember hockey going back to the early 80's. I will miss him but it is time. So Mario this one is for you---Thanks for the memories, leadership, outstanding play and most of all the great person that you are on and off the ice. jason
 
Injury is not the way you wan't to see a Great player leave the sport, but his legacy as one of the greatest ever is in place. Also, we are not talking about a hip or back injury here, it's an irregular heartbeat. Why risk it? Get yourself healthy Mario, so you can live to enjoy your kids, grandkids, etc... Thanks for the memories. Mike
 
writing's been on the wall for this one for awhile, but it's still sad to see it come.

A great career, hurt by injury at many points and still remarkable when put together.

Sad that he can't have a final game and send off from the fans.

He'll leave a big hole in the sport of hockey much like Gretzky did. But it looks like the new kids in the league will fill those holes fairly well.

Gonna miss ya Mario!
 
I thought he should have hung them up in 03/04. Id rather remember the dominant Mario of the late 80's and early 90's then the guy who looked lost in 03/04 and 04/05.

I wish him all the luck. Hopefully he can now focus on the team not moving.

He was most likely the greatest talent to ever play.
 
It's a sad day to be a Pens fan! Lemieux was the heart and sould of the franchise for so many years. We knew this was coming but it's still a shock. The guy has given the Franchise so much and as a Penguin fan I appreciate every bit of effort he has put forth. Undoubtedly the best player to dawn a Pens uniform and arguably the best OR second best of all time. Mario it was a great ride...unlike last time this time we know it's for good!
 
Yup, with Mary-O's contract off the books, maybe they can buy out Gonchar and try to take steps to right the sinking ship... but they won't.
Hey, why don't the Pens try to lure Ziggy back with that $3 mil'? :)

On a more serious note, it ****s to see a guy have to retire due to a physical condition, but he should have said his farewells before the season started. He was a shadow of himself every game he played this season.

But as a Flyers fan, it's kind of fun seeing Pens fans demoralized even more... kinda like kicking a guy when he's down. ;)
 
Glad he's decided to hang them up, just in case his heart condition turns into something serious. Sad to see him go, but I'll always remember him letting the pass through his legs at the Olympics to Kariya for the goal . . .
