For those that attended the Expo, could you please post some comments about what was selling well? Or what wasn't? Besides the obvious McDavid, Larkin, etc. what was moving? Anything going for particularly high or low prices? Any sales that you were surprised by? What were buyers looking for? Any info is appreciated.

I will tell you that window shopping was trending hard.. lol

i was there on friday - i think i saw a few tumbleweeds - it was a ghost town compared to Friday on fall expo - usually a line at upper deck to open boxes, and i walked up with no wait - the ud guys looked lonely - when i asked a few booths if they were buying - they said...you have any mcdavid? and when i said no, they said, not buying. hahahaha

This was easily my best expo ever (I was a patron not a vendor).

On Saturday and Sunday the show was really packed and it appeared that most vendors did quite well (from the few I sampled). I noticed a lot of money moved around in all segments of the hobby (low-mid-high end) and people were buying and selling a whole lot. Interestingly, I found that macdavid wasn't the only thing selling and lots of buyers wanted stuff from 05-16.

I was pretty concerned about the hobby's future in the last couple months as it appareared that eBay prices were coming down. But this expo really reaffirmed the strength the community has and how many people young and old are really hyped about collecting.

For the record, I don't have any Mcdavid stuff and I still found myself able to make 15+ deals!

Wayne Gretzky Rookie Cards. I saw A LOT of action on RCs of the Great One and a few of the dealers that were carrying multiples had moved quite a bit. What happened to Michael Jordan RCs in the last year and a half is about to happen to Gretzkys.

So basically we've polarized the market into McDavid (which people want) and everybody else (which people will grudgingly take if they can't afford McDavid)

The future looks to be non cards.
WAY too many hat, sweater, jersey, framing, ice cream, salted meats & hockey D&D type game(?) booth's. The drop off in card vendors seems huge over the last year or so.

Young Guns of Crosby and Ovechkin (especially ungraded) seemed to be going pretty well. Most of the vendors I talked to said it was one of their better expos recently.

It was an Expo of extremes for us. We were either selling some nice higher-end vintage singles and sets, or it was stuff out of the Set Killer's Corner boxes.

As for buying, hardly anyone brought me anything to purchase. I did my best buying off other dealers.

How strange. I have set up at the last 20 Expos and I would say Friday was the busiest we've ever had a Spring show. We were solidly busy from 3-8 p.m. and had the best single day we've had in some time.

Wayne,

I think both assessments are pretty accurate. I was there all weekend as well. And I have to admit, by around 5 or 6 it was pretty slow. In terms of attendance. I think maybe the Jays game had something to do with that. But for the people that stuck around. They seemed to be pretty focused on what they were doing. As I seen several large sales/deals made Friday in the afternoon. Good too see you again, Wayne.

Cheers,

For those of us that only focus on hockey, can you elaborate on what has been going on with the Jordan RCs?

I thought it was great. I was set up and sales were quite good! Friday was the best day while Saturday was a tad quiet. I was told there was an issue with the parking lot being full and police were out and not allowing people in so that could have been an issue.

Lower-end binders did quite well, as usual. High end stuff is always tough to move at Expo. As for buying, I wasn't offered very much either. Looking forward to November already :)

Poor UD guys should put more effort into their products, a polished turd is still a turd.... The last 3-4 products released I've gladly passed on and watched others take a beating on breaks... I don't see any value in the recent releases, SPx namely #1 junk
