A mere 833 days ago I started a crazy little project... till then I'd been purely a player collector, but when Dr. Price shared his previews of Lord Stanley's Mug (especially the Mega Patches) I was hooked. Mug has virtually everything I could ask for in a set: it is dedicated to that time of year when legends are made - all about Stanley Cup Winners from the earliest days up to the present, a gorgeous base set, hard signed autographs, all game-worn memorabilia, and unmatched attention to detail - the cards specific to a given year feature a player photo from the right era and all the memorabilia matches the team featured on the card... oh yeah, and those 1/1's - so many beautiful game-used stick and Mega Patch pieces!
A huge shout out to 30ranfordfan30 for pointing me to the final two cards I needed to complete the collection - coincidentally both featured Bill Ranford of course. They were both listed just on ebay.ca and I never would have seen them without his help, so a hearty stick tap for a most appreciated assist! I've also picked up numerous cards from too many HI members to mention all by name, but thank you to everyone who helped me complete this milestone!
With the final cards in hand, I've now completed my first Master Set! Well... with a couple of asteriskes I suppose - I'll of course never own all the 1/1's... and while I did complete the 45-card foil-stamped redemption set, I exchanged that for a gorgeous replica Stanley Cup autographed by Bobby Clarke - since then I've managed to nearly rebuild the set of now-expired redemption cards, but still half a dozen to go. There were 11 replica mugs in total available, all 11 were claimed within the one year deadline - from the case breaks I've seen it seems pretty clear that 16 copies of each redemption card were likely produced, thus leaving 5 unredeemed copies of each card on the market.
Over the past couple of years, not only have I worked hard on completing the set, but I've taken my obsession a step further and worked at upgrading a lot of my memorabilia cards - a fair number of the gold parallels have at least some copies with nicer multi-coloured swatches so I've really tried to get as many multi-coloured as I can... and for the silver memorabilia cards I really like the look of non-plain-old-white jersey swatches so I've upgraded a number of those as well.
Before we get to the show, the requisite numbers... I've completed the following 100%
Base Set: 100 cards
History Inserts: 45 cards
Autographs (approx 35 copies made apiece): 285 cards
Memorabilia (ranging from x/80 to SP x/9's): 359 cards
Henri Richard Tribute (most memo, all auto, all x/10): 33 cards
Gold Memorabilia (all x/10): 175 cards
Decades Memorabilia Silver (expo-exclusive set, all x/9): 120 cards
And the asteriskes...
Expired History redemptions: 39/45 = 87%
Main set One-of-Ones: 163/460 = 35%
Decades Memorabilia Gold 1/1's: 13/120
