I think all teams were happy with what they got.
Ottawa really wanted Duchene, but they also needed to shed salary. It was obvious that an extension to Turris wasn't going to happen. Sens want to win, and they know their window is now. So giving up on draft picks, a C prospect (they have C. White, and Logan Brown), and dump Hammond. So easy decision.
Nashville got the #2C they are looking for in Turris and signed him long term. Although they had to give up a couple of decent prospects, but didn't have to give up their core d. Having players like Tolvanen looking like a blue chip propsect makes Kamenev expendable. Also signing Edjsell, who is also doing well, in the summer gives the Preds a lot of prospects. They also have Fabbro as a D prospect too. It really, really helps when you draft well, and are able to attract UFA and Euro players.
Sakic's patience paid off, and what also helped was that Duchene didn't sit and pout after asking for a trade. I believe Sakic was one of his hockey heroes growing up.
Now in terms of UFA rental prices, Turris could be seen as cheap. It could have cost Nashville a 1st and a prospect to land him at the trading deadline. Also, Turris' cap hit would have been less, and it would be easier for other teams to go after him. So giving up essentially three 2nd round picks is reasonable. Based on the quickness in which an extension to Turris was done, Preds knew in advance that Turris would sign, which makes what they gave up, totally worth it.
For Duchene, who has another year left under contract, a 1st, prospect drafted in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd isn't totally outrageous, especially if Ottawa saw Turris as a contract to shed (like Hammond's), instead of an asset to be gained from. So what they passed to Avs from the Turris deal, was bonus.
Avs have instantly re-stocked the cupboard. They bought themselves time to re-build and re-organize from the few mistakes they've made over the past few years. It'll be interesting when they decided to do about Landeskog, who has 3 more years left on his contract, but a Modified NTC kicks in next year.
