Anybody out there collecting Connor McDavid cards already? Is he guaranteed to be the first pick in 2015? I can't decide if they are a good investment or not.

Frontrunner right now last time I knew. As for his cards, his 1st cards came out in 12-13 ITG H&P so probably not the best ones to invest in at the moment as they are the only ones (forgot that Ultimate came out recently, he has some in there too). I'd wait until the next release where there will be more of him and you can pick them up cheaper. Last time I checked he was selling fairly high and I'm not sure how it could get higher unless he does something monumental in juniors next season. 2 JSY/Autos /40 have a bid on them at $150+
I'd pick them up next year when there's more out there and then wait until the 2015 draft hits and that season starts as i'm sure he'll play right away.

Does the fact that this years cards of him in H&P, being his first cards, will be worth more than next years?

Surely there is a better investment out there than tying up your money in hockey cards for 2 years to make a few bucks.

He was by far the best player at the U18s and almost all of his opponents were a year older.

McDavid ITG Patch Auto sells the same price as the Crosby Patch Auto from ITG of his junior years. It won't be an investment but nice pieces to own.

What if he gets injured? Are his cards already priced to factor in the hype already? What if he has an off year? There are so many things taht would be riding on the health and performance of a teenager - no guarantee of anything - as it is with anyone

I'd say he's a sure thing, when people are saying they would have picked him first overall this year if he would have been available, but then again if he gets severely injured in the next two years things could change.

I'm pretty sure many GMs would agree that they'd take him 1st overall in the 2013 draft if they could.
However, I really think that this coming year should be very interesting as there will be other 97s in the CHL to compare him to (He was already playing against a few late 96s).
But to say whether his card values go up or down? I'm not sure. However his hard-signed autographs from 2013 Draft Prospects would be one of my favorites to pick up along with his first Heroes & Prospects auto from 2012-13. Anything else, I'm not sure if they increase over the next 2 years as similar cards are released.

The hype is on this kid now. He seems legit but as a few years have come & gone in the hyped player drafts, he could be the 2nd overall if the 1st place teams needs a solid D-man & there is a NHL ready D-man to be chosen. A lot of these things usually don't come out to play until the draft year. Injury or slow development in the next few years (same production w/injury or production not much better than previous year w/no injury) could reduce his projection.All a guessing game.
If you do start chasing McDavid now, expect his hype to drive the prices. Wait for the beginning of the next season to get his cards at a reduced price if his production starts to suffer from less than adequate support on his team or a slump.
Crosby's cards even slumped a little in his juniors for a time before he made it big.

Every year there is a next big thing and their auto's sell for decent money. As soon as they are drafted and get a billion auto's out there the early minor ones drop like a stone...look back through from players like Crosby, Ovy, Stamkos, Tavares. Same pattern everytime.
