Just curious as I have an opportunity to pick one up. Nice logo patch on it but only two colour with a few breaks. I'm going to buy it, but just curious on how badly I may get fleeced or may be happy. Thoughts?

There's also an /5 version that's listed for $12,500. Heckuva card but wowzas that is some big coin.

Nice card but not worth that. That will come down eventually. They all do. They skyrocketed when the first wave came out but now they are a novelty and niche market. I think frank's dollar value is where they will settle for now. I assume they will drop once cup arp shows up.
But none the less, great looking cards.

I remember when people were paying crazy money for Nathan MacKinnon. Wow has he fallen since then. Not saying that will happen with McD but just wow on the $ exchanging hands.

This.

MacKinnon has dropped as much as 80% on some cards. This McDavid isn't even a true rookie, very much a niche card.

Look at it this way....are there any Crosby rookie year cards, numbered out of 25 that would even fetch four figures right now? Not a one. Crosby has literally done everything that McDavid could hope to do in his career. Why are people spending this kind of money on McDavid? It just boggles my mind.

The scary thing is the people that dump crazy money into McDavid will not get their money back. For example, my buddy spent $3,800 on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Cup RC and now a person can pick one up for $700

He also bought Ice Mackinnon RC /99 for $2,500 and one sold for $337 a few weeks ago.

Interesting discussion, I think I agree with non rookie material that there is a lot of long term risk.

The bigger problem is that every top rookies initial pricing is supported by the idea that they are the next Gretzky, Crosby, Toews (might be a little personal bias in there). Then 2 issues kick in. One is reality that very few rookies will register enough points in their first year to follow up the initial interest. The second is that the next season there will be a new flavour of the day. People will be chasing the new guy with their limited dollars.....thus prices on last years rookies typically sag.

From the quote above, while what happened to mackinnon is reality, it's not necessarily true for every rookie (just the majority)

I don't know the market on all high end Crosby cards, but I remember buying young guns for $100, and I paid $300 for my sp authentic auto rc.

Saying the same thing is going to happen to all McDavid rookies might be a little early!

Anyways back to your regularly scheduled posts.

Thanks!

I posted THIS a while back, just to show how far MacKinnon truly has fallen.

To be fair though, I NEVER saw MacKinnon in the same light as I do McDavid. Not that I would spend that kinda scratch on either kid, but McDavid vs MacKinnon? McDavid wins hands down.

Thanks for the input guys and it's turned into a good discussion. I ended up not buying. Not because I didn't want to but because the price jumped 4 times from the first offering until i said f this. I said yes to three different prices, each one obviously higher than the other. I basically told him i was done bidding and i do believe it's going to end up selling for less than my last offer. I only have so much time for a$$hats.
