Montreal Canadiens : Pierre McGuire, an NBC commentator, had interviewed for their vacant general manager position.


so maybe he won't be on NBC anymore
 
A) I could not be happier than if his 'personna' left the broadcast arena.

B) I can only laugh if anyone actually hires him - and Monreal should stay far away.
 
I disagree, I think he would be great for that job. I was hoping he would land the job in Toronto. He might be a bit of a dink but he knows hockey and hockey talent better than anyone.

Agreed. Pierre McGuire comes off as a bit of an excited fanboy with awkward body language during hockey broadcasts, but that aside is one of the smartest hockey minds outside of an NHL franchise right now. I wonder if he's hard to work with, or something along those lines? I can't think of any other reason he hasn't been snapped up by an NHL team in some form of managerial or consultant role (maybe he's getting paid more from NBC than what any team is offering him, who knows.)
 
My Habs fan friends will never hear the end of it if McGuire becomes their GM :D

The man definitely knows his hockey, if they can keep him away from the cameras so he has no reason to raise his voice he may actually do a good job.

Respectfully disagree.

This is the same guy who lamented the Habs for picking Carey Price (although he quickly changed his tune about a year later) and LOVED the Raycroft for Rask deal from the Leafs perspective meanwhile the fanbase was up in arms.

I'm sure you can youtube it...

Yeah I'll definitely look it up later on.

I usually go out of my way to listen to McGuire's weekly call-ins with the Team 1040 here, so that's what I'm used to listening to. He seems to be two completely different people on and off the TV airwaves. I don't know what it is. He's a complete buffoon at times when he's on TV, but in terms of the Team's guests, there's almost nobody else I like listening to better than him when he's speaking about relevant stuff.
 
Do not take what you hear on the airwaves as his 'knowledge' of players and up and comers. You are talking about a man who prepares very well - as most braodcasters do.

Evaluating talent and organizing a path for a franchise to return to greatness are completely different than knowing players and the game. That is why there so few success stories even with high draft picks year after year. McGuire looks at players and sees what they do well - not at how they can play and develop into a cohesive system.

The Habs best chance was Jim Nil - too bad his wife is fighting a health battle right now.
He is probably the best talent out there.

In all seriousness, He would be no worse than Patrick Roy.
 
Great. He'd spend the Molson money to devise a cloning machine, and the team would be 4 full forward lines, 6 defensemen and a goaltender all named "Dion Phaneuf".

As visible as this guy is, there is obviously a reason that no NHL franchise has hired him since he was punted from the Whalers. He probably drives the players as batsh*t crazy as he does the fans.
 
I can't stand Montreal, thus the perfect place for him. His ridiculousness in front of a camera has easily made its way into locker rooms; he'd lose the ear of the team in SECONDS. However, Montreal is the new NYI, so this decision would not be a surprise.
 
What McGuire knows is good for a scout, not for a GM position... and even then, I would question that role for him.

It's one thing to know what city a certain player played Peewee hockey and what his favourite brand of cereal to have before 5am practice, but it's another thing to actually know and evaluate that person, and a completely different scenario when managing an entire NHL team.

I can't wait until he trades Subban, 1st, and Louis Leblanc for Phaneuf or his many man crushes like Erik "he's going to be a 30 goal scorer in this league" Christensen just because he saw them live at the WJC or in some obscure Ontario hockey league game.

That and the fact that I really question how much this man is respected in the league. The guy is a joke in the league when he was in position. I've read articles that said players didn't even listen to him. He loves to name drop, but I seldom see or hear anyone acutally say anything about McGuire other than take jabs at him or in Hartnell's case and many NHLers, make fun of him any opportunity he gets.
 
I'm a fan of McGuire in the booth. With him being one of the finalists for the Minnesota a job a year or two back, and him interviewing for the Habs opening I think it is a matter of time before he does get a GM position somewhere.
