An unusually small "incoming mail" folder in my email inbox means that this might be my last mail post for a few weeks. I guess the bug just hasn't hit me to go all out in acquiring some of the new stuff. I'm continuing to focus on select rare items for my player and rookie collections, and am happy to share some of those new additions here.

10-11 Black Diamond Hardware Heroes Martin St. Louis (035/100)
Here's the reason for the purchase -- an awesome insert of one of my favorite Lightning players. Admittedly, the acetate section of the card doesn't look that great on a brown background. I should have put a piece of white paper behind it.
There are only 100 copies printed of this card, and it celebrates Marty's Lady Byng Trophy win from 09-10.

10-11 Donruss Boys of Winter Jersey Prime Mark Flood (082/100)
10-11 Donruss Boys of Winter Jersey Prime Jonathan Toews (026/100)
These cards were also purchased on ebay -- again, mainly due to being inexpensive. The Toews card features a standard two-color jersey swatch, while the Flood card has a pretty big white seam next to black jersey material. Sadly, the card backs are completely vague on where the jersey pieces come from. The statement (which would make UD proud) indicates only that the jersey pieces are guaranteed as game-used. The range of possibilities for where the Flood jersey piece came from is almost endless, given how long he's been in the minors. Or, could the jersey actually be from his six-game stint with the Islanders last season?
The Toews might be available, but I plan to keep the Flood as part of my oddball rookie collection.

10-11 Donruss Rookie Showcase Threads Joe Colborne (217/250)
Speaking of "oddball rookie collection..."
This card is one of the most infamous of the entire 10-11 production year. Joe Colborne has never played a game in the NHL, and is ineligible to appear on licensed NHL trading cards. That didn't stop Panini from letting this one slip through into packs of Donruss. I have not seen any of the parallel versions that other players in the set earned, so I can only assume that the base version /250 is the only Colborne card to make it into the marketplace.
I have no information at all on how this hobby faux pas was dealt with. It's probably safe to say that it's beyond just a breach of licensing etiquette, but is it grounds for a slap on the wrist or something more serious? I sincerely doubt that the hobby world will ever find out the answer.
As for me? I'm just glad to own this card that shouldn't have been. It was purchased on ebay with the two above, and is not available.
A further note -- I've seen maybe 20-30 copies of this card, and all but one had a black swatch. One copy went up on ebay with a yellow swatch.

While we're on the Parkhurst Rookie theme -- let's up the stakes with two rookie cards from the top tier! These next two cards were also ebay purchases -- from two different sellers.
This is Dan Fritsche's best rookie card -- it contains a piece of a Sarnia Sting jersey. I'm up to 29/35 for Fritsche RCs.

The big reason for the trade with Tatu was to pick up three Eric Perrin cards from the new Finnish Cardset. After just missing out on making the Tampa Bay Lightning roster out of training camp, Perrin returned to Finland for the 10-11 season.
My Eric Perrin collection stands at 51/52. The elusive 52nd card -- a late-90s International Hockey League team issue -- was on ebay not too long ago. I didn't exactly go easy on my bid, but I still lost the auction. Completion will have to wait for another day.
Tatu, thanks for picking up these Perrin cards for me -- looking forward to the next deal as always!

I was very lucky to find this tough German issue on ebay -- a card many years old from a second tier team in Europe is not something easy to find on this side of the Atlantic. Shawn Maltby (younger brother of Kirk) played for the Detroit Vipers in 99-00. I'm now listed at 9-for-11 on his cards, but to be honest, I've never seen either of the oddball UK issues that are still on my wantlist.

I never picked up any of these cards because every single one I've ever seen has a plain white swatch. I decided I'd better buy in when the buying's right -- so I made the purchase for all three of these from the same ebay seller.
I usually don't disclose my prices, but I will in this case. I received all three of these cards for a grand total of $6.49 delivered.

10-11 Upper Deck Game Jersey Patch Sergei Samsonov (08/15)
This one was a bit more expensive, but perhaps even more important. I'm still upset that I've been unable to get any of the Samsonov patch cards from 05-06 or 06-07 Upper Deck. So, I'm trying to keep up with the new stuff.
There are two obvious colors in the jersey swatch, with three layers -- black stitching, black patch, and brown "bear" patch. However, a close inspection of the card reveals that there is a very tiny layer of yellow at the top left portion of the window. It looks slightly shiny, so I believe it to be patch material. Since very little of it shows through, it's hard to tell for sure.
Time to finish out the post with Tim Thomas. There's just four cards in this mail post, but they add up to something great.

10-11 Black Diamond Quad Jerseys Onyx Tim Thomas (02/10)
Here's the toughest of the four Quad Jersey cards from Black Diamond. I now have the whole set. Of course, the Onyx (Black) version is not really all that dark in color. It's pretty similar to the "silver" on the regular card. Check out the base version of the same card to see what I mean. The colors are far too similar for my liking. I can't call it one of UD's finest decisions. That said, at least it's a slightly different color -- unlike most of Panini Limited's Banner Season insert parallels.

08-09 Between The Pipes Game-Used Emblem Silver Tim Thomas (/19)
This one is very nice! I only saw one or two copies of this card when the product was released, and didn't jump in to make a purchase. It has been since then that another one surfaced. This one has a great three-color emblem swatch. I do own the Gold 1/1 version as well.
Somehow, despite earning a grand total of 94 cards in various Between The Pipes sets from 02-03 to 09-10, I've managed to pick up almost every non-1/1 Thomas card from those sets. In fact, prior to this mail post, I was just missing one non-1/1 card from 06-07, 07-08, 08-09, and 09-10:
06-07: Emblem Auto /10 -- only copy I know of is being listed on ebay over and over and over again by a dumb seller for a dumber price.
07-08: Emblem /10 -- only copy I know of is owned by memoriesonice for a similarly dumb price.
08-09: See above!
09-10: Emblem Auto Black /6 -- never seen one at all.
What's perhaps even more important to me is the progress this helps me make on Thomas cards in the 08-09 product year. In terms of non-1/1 cards, owning this one leaves me with just five left on the wantlist from that season. Three are rare/expensive multi-player jersey/patch cards from SP Game Used. Two are UD Champ's Mini cards with different colored backs. Player collectors know very well how tough those can be.
Well, that wantlist is down to four cards now -- as one of the Champ's cards has also come home. It's a huge Tim Thomas milestone!

08-09 UD Champ's Mini Blue Back Tim Thomas
This is only the second copy I've ever seen of this card. I stupidly let the first one go shortly after the product was released -- and never saw another copy until now. It's the second-toughest of the Champ's Mini variations, with only the purple version being more scarce. I can't guess a specific print run, but to borrow an Al Muir phrase, it can probably be counted using just your two hands.
So, here it is -- just as Thomas earns his 600th official trading card in 10-11 UD Series 2, a milestone has been reached. The Champ's Blue Back is Tim Thomas card #500 in my collection! The half-millennium mark for perhaps the best hockey story (and hockey person) in years.

News and notes:
** This will likely be my last mail post photographed with my Olympus C-4000 camera. I have recently upgraded to a Canon EOS Rebel T2i -- a camera that is two or three leagues ahead of the old Olympus. I doubt the difference will really be noticeable on highly-cropped, resized, processed pictures of hockey cards. For my other photographic needs, it's like night and day.
** Good luck trying to predict who gets into the playoffs in the west. I can't believe how tight it is all the way from #3 to #12.
