Mikko Koivu signs 7 year deal

The bottomline, the guy can play hockey. Not sure if you see him play much I think he is one of the top 15 forwards in the league for sure.

He is great at faceoffs, back checks, penalty kill, passes the puck well and great in the shootouts. He is a team player and you can't beat that for the money he is getting paid.
 
I see it as market value. He didn't do the Wild any favours but he's not overpaid for what he can do.

(and I hate the Wild) :)
 
If he's worth that much money.....then Gillis stole the Sedins.
He's going to have to bag more than 71 points before Im prepared to give him the "top 15" label.
 
I like how everybody feels the need to call a player "overpaid" if he doesn't score XX amount of points. Does anyone consider overall talent, physical ability, playing both ends of the ice, and great leadership??? Mikko Koivu provides all of that and isn't the selfish hog with the puck and that reflects on his point totals. Now if the Wild could give him a decent supporting cast of players like him he would be putting up Pinky and the Brain twin-like numbers.

I wouldn't sweat other's opinions too much. If there's one thing I've learned from these signing threads its that any player that makes more than minimum wage is overpaid. Seems like a lot of fans would rather the money end up in managements pockets than the guys actually doing the job out on the ice.
 
Great stuff. I always fear for the fans of teams who haven't always demonstrated a willingness to lock up players long term.

At the end of the day, it's a lot of money over a long term. But it could be that much money for Wade Redden or Chris Drury or some other free agent with no connection to the franchise.

Great signing. Perhaps not worth that price tag for his qualitys as a player, but he sure does show heart every time he's on the ice. Not many players show that much willingness.
 
Solid signing for a very under rated player. He reminds me a lot of Hossa, who gets a bad rap for not scoring 120 points a year for some reason. They are identical players, good scorers, great passers, willing to throw the body, fore check like mad men, and play incredible defense. There are players making more in the league who don't bring as much to the table. I would take Mikko over any of these players who make the same or more; Dany Heatley, Joe Thornton, Brian Campbell, Marian Hossa (same player but Koivu is younger), Patrick Kane, Brad Richards, Shawn Horcoff, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Wade Redden, Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson, Daniel Briere, Kimmo Timonen, JS Giguere, Dion Phaneuf, and Roberto Luongo (who I still can't believe makes twice as much as Brodeur). Just my opinion, I just think he's a very solid signing for the price compared to what other players are making.
 
Good player but I think they gave him too much. I know he is better known as an all around player but that is some big money. I still remember when Brett Hull was trying to get a million dollars from the Blues and they told him he was crazy. His agent was smart enough to build in some clauses that earned him a pile of cash. As far as I know he was the first to work these type of bonus into a contract.

Again good signing, teams need these type of guys. I still think they gave him too much.

The current offensive center of your Franchise, Captain of your team, entering the prime of his career - he has to make more than anyone else on the team, doesn't he? This just puts him ahead of Backstrom on the pay scale.

Personally, I do think it's too much, but it's Minnesotas money to spend, and if they have identified him as the centrepiece with upside to build around, so be it.

I dunno, maybe because I'm a Flyers fan I'm always worried about the cap....almost $7 mill a year cap hit for a guy who only has 79 goals and +10 through 5 seasons?
I don't deny his heart eaither, but even Crosby had more hits than this guy last year.

If he's a fan favorite though, whatever you have to pay him to keep him I guess (I dont want to lose Gagne even though everyone says he's washed up and not worth $5.25 million).
 
Another good player getting elite player money. Anyone who thinks we're not heading for another work stoppage is fooling themselves.

Kane? Really? He just scored the OT Cup Winner. How much has Chicago made on t-shirts, hats, jerseys, etc. because of it? Granted the guy isn't the defensive player Koivu is and he didn't win the Cup alone, but his offensive skills are every bit equal or better than Koivu. Not to mention he's American playing in a huge U.S. market.

Productivity is a major factor in how most jobs are measured, including pro sports. This is not new.

Talent: Its a matter of opinion, Sheldon Souray probably thinks he is the most talented dman in the league. But what about his production?
Physical ability: How is this measured? Bench press? No.....its about productivity. Hits etc. As pointed out, Crosby hits more than Koivu.
Playing both ends of the ice: +5. He'll have to do better than that.
Great leadership: Look at the record of the team that he "leads". What is their win/loss record? Division titles? Playoff success? Stanley Cups?

"Pinky and the brain"?? :laugh:

I hate to break the news but one of them just won the Art Ross as scoring champ and the Hart trophy. :owned:

Now thats productivity.

Darren, bang on - I totally agree - this next one is going to make the last work stoppage look tame, especially if the NHL is still the owner of the Coyotes and possibly other teams.

Though the PA still needs to get their head out of their collective bums and hire a good leader. Fehr might be a decent choice, though I'm not sure he's really that interested...
