Modano to Wings??

Not PO'ed at Modano - I just think that the playoffs showed that we need young, fast and tough.

Certainly Modano can help in areas - but the playoffs are not Mike's fortay.

I Hope SO!!!! The guy starts his career with my favorite junior team and he can end it with my favorite NHL team. Please sign him Wings, please!! Modo has to be one of my favorite Raider alumni that this would throw me into a Modano collecting frenzy! lol

I was kind of hoping he would end up in Minnesota. Only because it will be odd seeing him wear anything other than green.

I was thinking the same.

Some players only belong in one color, and it would be quite nostalgic if he ended where he began. sort of.

I just wish he'd retire instead of going to a different team, it being weird that he's not a Dallas Star and then him being a bit player with a minimal impact.

I agree. I hate seeing stars hang on too long. The guy is now a 3rd liner at best and is ok on the PP. Other than that, does he really bring anything anymore?

I think a motivated Modano would bring the Wings what they need. A second PP unit point man, a good PKer and a guy who can win faceoffs. If he scored 15 goals and 20 assists I'd be thrilled.

I think he would surprise people if he played in Detroit. He'd play for a legit contender again and not have to be "the" guy although he really wasn't in Dallas anymore either. Nevertheless, he's still got some speed to go around and I think he'd be a great fit. As far as not wanting to see him in another jersey I think that's crap. Even if he wins a Cup in Detroit people will still always see him as a Star. Do people look at Bourque as anything other than a Bruin? If he still wants to play I'm all for him.

How many of us would turn down $1 million dollars to play hockey? Seriously. Dallas dumped him. Go play for Detroit Mike. Do it.

face it - detroit has been an elephant graveyard with some degree of sucess

Now that is certainly an understatement.

However - the league has changed, it is a much better product from a skill level. Younger faster and stronger. I know Holland thinks the Wings have a small window of 2-3 years to still excel. But with a healthy team and the addition of Hudler on the PP - I just do not think we need Modano.

If you look back to the thread about Dallas declining to offer Modano a contract - you will see that I suggested back then that it would be very cool if Minnesota took him in for a year. I would LOVE to see him in a throwback Notrh Stars uni a couple of times next year!!!!

I understand what you're saying, but I think when older guys are able to make these roles work for them, it works out as a win-win for the player and the team. And, honestly, I'd rather watch Modano fill this role rather than some of the rookies, journeymen, etc. that fill it elsewhere.

As a Wings fan, I'm always excited when they have a chance to get a player like this to fill any role. I think it may be doubly weird though to see Modano in Red AND wearing a new number!

Babcock is apparently convinced that he will sign with the Wings for 2 yrs - at least according to a tweet from Pierre LeBrun

If he does sign with Detroit, I have lost alot of respect for him. In my mind he will always be a Star. I can understand still playing for the love of the game, but it would be better to retire and start working in the Stars front office.

I hope he just retires. I can't think of many things worse than the face of the Franchise wearing a Red Wings jersey. It was strange enough with Hull, I think it would be unbearable with Mo.

Mike Mo will sign in Detroit and as a result of that signing Detroit will win the cup. Now I know what you're thinking, "Is this guy crazy, Modano is not the same player he was when the Stars won the cup. A guy who scored 30 points last season is not going to give that push that the Wings need." I'm not talking about his scoring or his play necessarily leading the Wings to the cup. I'm talking about his presence.

Just the fact that Modano will be there will be the motivation that the Wings need to push it to the next level and win the cup. Let's look at the last 4 wings cup wins

1997- They won it for the fans because it had been so long. They had the motivation and were able to take it to the next level

1998- They won it for Vladdy. Simple as that, Vladdy was their motivation and as such, he helped them take it to the next level with just his presence.

2002- Guys like Robitaille, Hasek, etc. entered the scene. Guys who hadn't won a cup before or, like Chelios, Hadn't won the cup in a really really long time.

2008- Dallas Drake. Drake was a hometown boy coming home, cupless. He provided the motivation that the Wings needed to take what is rightfully theirs back to hockey town.

Now in 2011, Mike Modano can fill the Dallas Drake role. The Wings didn't have that type of guy the past couple of seasons that motivated them just by their presence. If they sign Modano, then they do.

i could only imagine if the Rangers won the Cup every time we signed an older, past-his-prime player. we would've won one for Gretzky, Bure, Lindros, Fleury, Jagr.....

Wow. Really?

The guy can still produce - albeit not at the level he has in the past. Just because he doesn't pack it in himself because of the Stars going in a different direction doesn't mean he's being disloyal by joining another club. If he can make a contribution and feels he's up to it, all the more power to him.

It's not like he has to be taken out back to be shot because he's outlived his usefulness
