For some time I have been getting more and more disillusioned with the hobby. I gave up buying basketball years ago when Panini increased prices for that product and with Fanatics taking over baseball and football in my opinion, they are even worse. Example, buying the base set of Topps, if you bought a jumbo box with the exception of one box that was missing a single card I always got a complete set from that one jumbo. This year buying a jumbo box of series one, I was 31 cards short of the set and series two I was 40 cards short of the set. No plans to ever buying base Topps sets again!! Maybe no more baseball ever??

So last week I decided it is time to start selling off part of my collection and to a degree I thought with Fanatics taking over football, no plans to buy any more football as well.

Yesterday I gathered up about 70% of my football collection and took it to the local to sell /trade in too them as they have a big card show coming up this coming weekend and there was some amazing cards I know they can sell at the show.

Cash and trade yielded me a few more boxes of Extended as I wanted to finish the set since once I start something I want to finish and I wanted to finish off UD 1, 2, and Extended.

From Extended I wanted to get the Tribute Retro Bedard and the Canvas Young Guns. I ended up pulling almost everything that I wanted. I ended up 7 cards short of the Tribute set so I bought them on eBay last night. So I finished off the part of the set I had wanted to finish. Didn't care for some of the insert sets and no plans to chase them.

If you saw my earlier post of my first Extended break you saw that I pulled these cards:

Yesterday's break from the traded yielded these:

And, one of the cards I wanted:

I had a few extra young guns with me and I traded them in for two packs of Extended from the open box on the shelf and this was in the first pack

No Canvas Bedard but really I didn't expect to pull it, so instead of trying again to pull it, I will buy one.

At this point, I am trying to decide if I am done with the hobby? Can't make up my mind, it has been a ride for sure and busting hockey as brought me a lot of fun and joy.

Good luck to each of you and may I wish you the best.

Great pulls, Ron! I hope you aren't done with the hobby. I always enjoy seeing your S&T posts. But if you are, thank you for sharing with us. All the best!

Agreed with this. I hope you stick around but completely understand if you don’t. Thanks for always allowing us to live vicariously.

It has gotten to the point that I honestly feel bad for people who buy wax. High prices, next to no return unless you hit the “jackpot” for that season makes it a bleak prospect. That is why I have bought singles only since the 13-14 season save for 1 or 2 boxes of something cheap each year so I can open something.

That being said, I would encourage NOT to leave the hobby- just change how/what you collect so that it can be affordable/fun for YOU. If it’s not fun, it’s not a hobby. I only collect Taylor Hall so I’ll probably get most of his extended stuff for less than the cost of a box, probably not the 1/1.

I remember back in the day, if you were buying The Cup, folks knew that if you wanted to get your money back, you either bought a case or none at all (shout out to everyone who hit big one singles pack purchases). It seems to be this way now with basic boxes. Single boxes MIGHT do well (or not at all) but cases are the way to go. Even then, that's IF you don't get allocated.

Good luck on your decision to stay or leave. It's become harder to stay, that's for sure.

Great pulls!

Done with the hobby??? Say it isn't so, Mr. Horseshoe!

You'll always be welcomed (and lured) back.

I think that there is a middle path between being all-in in the hobby and completely leaving. For me, that middle path is the way to go. I buy my annual box of OPC hobby, and a few small boxes of products that I like from time to time. I started selling low and mid-end stuff on COMC, I will purchase a few specific PC cards with the credits from the sales, and I do some small trades on message boards. I completely stopped participating in group breaks, I am spending much less than before in the hobby, but I am still having fun.

What a great show here. If that is it for the hobby for you, it was a heck of a way to go out. That being said, whichever path you decide to choose I am sure you will enjoy it.
