I'll start this by letting you know that the last item I sold I had the payment held by paypal. The buyer waited 2 months to leave feedback so paypal returned him the funds thinking that I never sent the card without even checking with the buyer or myself. (The buyer was a good guy though and resent me the $ when he realized what happened).

Fast forward to today and I have a similar situation on my hands, I think. I sold a card Sunday and the buyer did something with paypal today. My eBay sold items only gives me the option to "View Paypal Transaction". When I click on that it takes me to a paypal site that tells me "Sign up to claim your payment", and it wants me to create a new account. I'm stumped, it doesn't look like there is any way around creating a new account. When I open a new page and sign into my account normally there is no evidence of any payment or pending payment. Anyone have this issue?

Sounds like it could be a phishing scheme if they want you to input your info again.

Run a virus scan?

Could be the opposite of that, and be nothing, but I wouldn't input a screen name and password ever in situations like this.

That's the thing though. It's not a phishing scheme. I have not gotten a single email from paypal or eBay. On my My eBay page where it lists my sold items the little basket is filled in saying the buyer went through checkout, but instead of a $ there is an hourglass. Next to that it says "View Paypal Transaction" and when I click that it takes me to paypal to sign up for an account to claim my payment.

Maybe your PayPal account became un-synced with eBay and it's trying to get you to sign up for a new account, not realizing you have a current account? I have no idea. Good luck with it, though.

Hmm, didn't think of that. I'll have to look into that. Whatever it is, it's very irritating.

Check to see if the buyer sent it to your correct email address. I'll bet he didn't and paypal is trying to find the address he used. It was probably a typo on his part.

How would that happen if he went through eBay's checkout which has my paypal on file?

Also, now when I click the "View Transaction Details" link on my eBay sold page, it takes me to paypal and instead of trying to get me to sign up for an account to claim the payment it says that the transaction I have tried to view is invalid. Very weird.

Sometimes when I have a payment with the hourglass, it's an e-check so it's "in progress" and it will stay that way for 7-8 days - don't send until you get the message saying that it's CLEARED.

An e-check would explain it, hopefully that's what it is, never had one before.

thanks,

It usually tells me that I've been sent an eCheck though. Nothing else changes with PayPal. I get the full emails and everything, and another email when it does clear.

Sometimes its possible to pay for eBay items by not going through the e-bay checkout system.

Its happened to me when trying to submit payment at one point. Basically, it involves paying through paypal and then making a change at some point during the payment process (not sure which point). What happens then is that the Paypal form resets and allows the user to make changes to the seller's s/h value and other values as well, like e-mail address, but not the value of the item.

Its been years since I've gone through Paypal to submit an eBay item that I don't know if it can be done anymore. Just posting here in case this is the issue.

In which case, do make sure that it was sent to your registered account and not to some third party account. In any case, until that hourglass changes, do not mail the item.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Mystery finally solved. Apparently my Paypal account and eBay account stopped communicating when I made a few preference changes/email address changes. So the buyer was trying to send a payment to my old paypal email address and it was not working.

Thanks for everyone's input.
