Short story - Expo rocked hard!

Long Story...

Thursday dinner at Jack Astor's was more intimate than usual as we had what was probably our smallest turnout to date. But that did allow for more conversations annnndddd more packs for each person to rip thanks to the crew from UD who came out and joined us for much of the evening.

I ripped my 2nd pack of SPA and pulled this which I had not yet acquired a copy so it became my first PC pickup of the weekend. Pretty cool that this is the card I pull!

Thanks to Billy, Diane, James and Jeff for joining us and talking hockey cards which we all love to do.

Early to bed that night as the show opened to vendors at 7:30 am for set up and I happened to be the 2nd guy there at around 7:15 eager for doors to enter. I like to get things set up as much as i can so that I go hunting for both PC pickups and cards to move later at the show or other shows.

But as happens, as soon as you have showcases out people start to window shop and deals start to happen.

My first deal of the show was a sale to a dude named Tyler who picked up a sweet mix of pieces including a Kuznetsov Future Watch Auto Patch, a Barzal Showcase ARP, Draisaitl SPx Auto and two Crosby autos; a Glacial Graphs and a BAP.

Then I went on a little walk and found a couple of the Series 1 UD Game Jersey Patches /15. I really like these cards this year and have since picked up a few more but still on teh fence whether I want to take on another large project (over 90 cards I think). But here i picked up the Greenway and a sick Seabrook feather piece.

The I happened by Karlos' booth and he offered a great deal on this bad boy...

img162.jpg

I once before owned a copy of this card but moved it a long time ago and regretted it ever since. So I made sure to grab this because i knew it wouldn't last very long. One of the benefits of getting there early :groove:

Back at my table I moved a Brodeur Artifacts Honored Members patch /27 to a guy who was working on the set. Always happy to help someone with a project like that!

Next sale was to Ameet's buddy from South FLA who grabbed a pretty sweet Tom Brady Optic Pink parallel that I had graded a PSA 10.

Then a regular customer of mine swung by and put some holes in my showcase by grabbing a SPA Perreault RC, PSA PArent, PSA 9 Gartner, PSA Alfredsson SP, PSA Hasek Pakhurst, PSA Linden OPC and PSA 10 Gary Roberts.

Followed by someone buying a McGinn Cup ARP.

Then a Federko PSA 8 RC was purchased from me followed by an 11 card CUP ARP sale to HI's own Tuukkatime! Ever wonder where he gets all his sweet cardboard, the man knows how to work an Expo!

Another sale to HI's own JTMcCool (Brian) who found a Mogilny Premier PSA 10 that he coveted.

Next sale was a nice one as I moved a decent sized stack of lower end cards that added up to a few hundred dollars.

Then I had a guy go thorugh my box of Cup ARP commons and pick out 15 of them to further lighten my load.

Someone needed a couple Cup non-patch RC's in Reimer and Perrault.

The I moved a McDavid BGS Graded SPx RC that I'd had for a few years that I got from Ravman way back.

Next up was a pre-made deal for a Perron Cp RC that the dude made good on.

Then I did my first cash and trade deal of the show where i got a Draisatl 25 Under 25 Patch and a little cash for a sick Belfour Supreme Patch

2018-UDs1-U25-7.jpg

Then I had a pretty serious collector purchase four nice PSA 9 80's rookies; Kurri, Messier, Bourque and Coffey.

My next deal was a purchase at the booth from a guy who cracked a case of Cup and a case of Premier, didn't like his return and wanted to get rid of it all. So while I already moved the Mittlestadt CUP ARP, The Heiskanen and Hart Premier ARP's I am still left with these two sweet holdings...

img163.jpg

img164.jpg

The next deal was a sale that replenished the cash I had just laid out as away went a PSA Gretzky RC and a BGS 9 Chara SP RC.

Then I moved three no-name Sabre Cup ARP's followed by Hasek UD PSA 10 RC and a Bowman Tiffany Belfour RC whose grade I cannot remember.

Next deal was the sale of a Selanne Property Of that I'd had for a few years but never really made it a PC piece so mixed feelings letting it go but the dude who bought it always dumps off a wad at my booth so I was cool with saying goodbye to the piece.

Then that same dude's dad grabbed a Howe Enshrinemenst and a LEmieux Brilliance out of my showcase. Good people them Pick's.

My next deal was a trade that I made without knowing much about the cards I was trading for. I just felt there was something special about one of them so I gave away a couple mass produced Young Guns of very noteworthy players that I can easily replace any day of the week for these...

1998-SPXTPR38.jpg

1998-UDPQ2-P9.jpg

and the card that could be a grand slam as it is /10, Oilers Uni, licensed and just plain gorgeous in hand - trust me the scan does it no justice...anyone seen any of these before? I'd love to pick your brain on the rarity of this beaut!
1999-BAPMHEH18.jpg

Then my boy Ralph bought my Tomas Tatarrrrrrr Cup ARP.

And then, as the Friday was winding down, I bought this stack of 13 cards off an Instagram hobby friend who I met in person and unbeknownst to me happened to be a member here too. Great guy KAB-1993. Thank you sir for the selling me these beauties and getting to know you was

And that was the end of a very successful first day of Expo. All in all I did 26 deals on the Friday.

Was a late exit from the show so nothing to tell about that evening as I ordered Uber Eats to my room after considering a stop at Zet's but they were lined up out the door and I hadn't eaten since 7am.

Saturday started off with a bang!

Sold a PSA 7 Gretzky RC followed by a PSA 6 Copy. Decent start to the day

Then I sold a Fleury/RC Rookie Update that also featured Patty Roy's auto!

Next sale was a Foegele SPGU True RC and a Marner BGS 9.5 Young Guns.

Then someone was feeling nostalgic and bought my Don Cherry Ice Scripts

Then an Ovechkin Ultra RC was bought followed shortly after by a PSA 5 Glenn Hall RC .

Then someone bought my Point Premier ARP and teh Hart Premier that I had acquired the day before.

Moved a PSA Linden RC and then a Gaudreau OPC Platinum parallel /199.

Then a series of single card sales including a Sprong Cup ARP. Brett Hull PSA 9 RC, Chris Tierney Cup ARP, a Mike Bossy PSA 6 RC, and a Peter Stastny PSA 9, an Anton Stastny PSA 9.

I had picked up a 2000 All-Star Patch Auto from Darren of MLS in Calgary a couple weeks earlier which I converted into some cash and three Minty Young Guns - MacKinnon, Toews and Kane.

Then tuukkatime came back and snagged seven more CUP ARP's off me all with sick patches.

That was followed up quickly with one of the Dave & Adams buyers coming by and purchasing 11 cards for one of their repack products. I always like selling to them or BG from Leaf or even UD for what ever repack or buy back products they are planning.

Made a major purchase shortly after for what is the bnicest PSA 5.5 Orr Rookie I've seen. It's actually nicer that any 6 or 6.5's I've seen. But you just cannot go wrong buying quality blue chip cards like that.

Then my boy Rourke came back and snagged 11 more Cup ARP's while his pops grabbed two more.

My man Tony from New York grabbed up my Donskoi and DeAngelo Cup ARPS' for some cash and I also got two more Series 1 patches.

img165.jpg

img166.jpg

Then the Saturday ended so fast it felt like it hadn't even started. I asked Ameet what time it was thinking it was like 1:00/1:15. Nope, it was 5:30! Time flies at Expo!

To finish off the day I sold a PSA 10 McDavid Young Gunsand then a Aho SPA Future Watch Auto Patch.

Saturday night was dinner at the Keg with the regular crew. All in all a productive Saturday with 29 deals consummated.

While Sunday was decent for sales too, it was great for buying!

First purchase was from Vic for this card for my hoard
200542.jpg

Then as I was walking around prior to the show opening to the public I came across these that I had to grab...

2016-Fleer-Showcase-MU11.jpg

2016-Fleer-Showcase-MU3-2.jpg

2016-Fleer-Showcase-MUV33.jpg

The Aho is /5 and to me, may be his best RC.

Then I grabbed these off Mike from Lower Level in Winnipeg on my way back to my booth:

BK1996fleer-Metal212.jpg

BK1997fleerzforce1794.jpg

Speaking of Winnipeg, AJ stopped by and picked up a nice assortment of Jets cards including a Morrissey Premier Gold ARP, Hellebuyck Diamond card, Lowry Cup ARP, a Scheifele Ice RC /99 PSA 9 and a couple others. Always a great guy to deal with.

Then a bunch of sales as follows:
Crosby NT Numbers patch (a triple for me) /87, a Jake Allen Cup ARP, Lazar and Kozun and Hammond Cup ARP's, a Ciccarelli PSA 9 RC, a Cirelli US S2 patch /25, a Montour Cup ARP, a Tkachuk Rookie Gear Cup booklet, Eddie Lack Cup RC, Gambrell SPGU True RC, Kuemper Cup RC.

Then I bought a Selanne for my PC just cuz these cards are rare now and they used to sell for hundreds of dollars each and this one is jersey numbered and the price was good so....

1ud-ud-2005-PTS.jpg

At this point the show was winding down and I had a bunch of cards I wanted to move so managed to sell to my buddy Mike from Eastridge a few stacks of cards including a bunch of graded and more. Go check out his store for his singles selection many of which were provided by yours truly! :D

A few more deals still though...sold one guy my Scott Stevens PSA 9 and Chelios PSA 9 RC's. Then Grant brought this by after I mentioned to him that if he pulls a patch in his S1 case to bring it over so I ended up buying this from him...

img167.jpg

And then as afinal deal for the show, a card I'd had my eye on from Norm's booth all weekend that we finally shook hands on...

201058.jpg

And that was the end of Expo. 20 deals on the Sunday. While my deal count was down from a few past Expo's this one was better for sales and for buying I felt. Seemed like people were spending money and the vibe and energy was just awesome.

Finished off the weekend with dinner at Zet's with Danny (great8) Steve (Quincy) and The Mayor of Canada. Appropriate ending to an amazing weekend.

random memory - Leafs cards were not hot at all. No one really wanted Matthews or Marner and everyone seemed to be selling Nylander and Kapanen, you could have bought tons of their cards off the people walking the room. Hopefully that all changes for Spring Expo with the new coach in place and their winning ways apparently back.

Didn't snap many pics through the weekend but here are couple...

That handsome devil in the blue hoody is the world famous Mayor of Canada!

That's it. Expo was two weeks ago and last weekend was the awesome WCSCC show in Langley BC that was also amazing. I'll try to get a thread done for that one too.

Thanks all for stopping by and hope to see y'all at a card show in the not-too-distant future!

And wow, I just realized after reviewing this thread that I did not pick up any vintage! That is rare for me. Ah well, when you love cards from 1910 - 2019, you can't get'em all!

And a special shout-out to dlowthers' son Drake for including me in his coffee and lunch runs on Saturday and Sunday, was much appreciated, fine sir!

Thanks for taking the time to do a breakdown like this. I appreciate it year after year. Takes me right into the hall and on the floor.

I am so happy to see inserts and parallels as a driving force in your PC these days. Huge fan of all of the colour in this post.

Can’t wait to see your write up from the other show as well.

Great write up  one of these years I will have to make the trip to expo, I have never been to one.

Very nice. I am also interested in info on the West coast show. Thanks big wheel!

Wow what a show! Those are some awesome cards. I’d you ever want to move the Matthews platinum emerald or synergy base let me know!

Awesome for sure. I like that McDavid auto...let me know if available and if I have anything you like.

Sounds like a good expo my friend, love the deal break down. Come out to Banff, we’ll have a coffee and cardboard day, lol

Love you posting your EXPO experiences and hopefully more members will consider attending, love the SITE
Never too late to start planning for next year's SHOW.
Always a pleasure to interact with some of the regular attendees.
THANK YOU for the purchase and never an issue but much appreciate.
IF serious about the UD1 Patch #/15, I have Doughty that might be of interest.
Hope to see YA in the spring!

Great to hear about your Expo deals. Now where is that Orr rc, even though you claimed to not have picked up any vintage. Show me that beauty. :foottap:

Jeremy

A most informative EXPO recap. Great to see that you realized the Hawerchuk SOTT out of your box.

Those UD Game Patches are mighty sweet.

Thanks for the show.

Jeremy, it's alway a good time. The last few expos have been a bit of tailspin in terms of telling the stories.. But its a good time as always..

Thanks Scott. Ido it for the members like you! Also appreciate your appreciation of the colorful pickups I had. They just put smiles on my face and that is why I hobby. I'll get to a WCSCC recap post hopefully one evening this week after the kids are in bed. Cheers!

Great show and I agree, this years UD patches are the best yet.

Thanks for looking in and commenting!

Incredible show and story! I'm jealous of that Stastny patch you picked up!

Happy to see you here and I'm still on fence about these patches as a PC project so hit me up with a PM in a week or so and perhaps we can make it yours!

That's a lot of great stuff! My favorite is the Beliveau, but the low #ed Gretzky are sweet too.

Awesome SHOW ……...and TELL.
