There is one person who I am constantly going up against for Tanguay patches. I don't mind when I lose one the first time, but in this case, it's the same one over and over again. The first time was a few months ago when I lost out on an unbelievable Limited Logo's patch of Tanguay /50. I wrote it off , since I bid over $200 and lost it I figured it was an anomaly, and I would get another one. I even went so far as to strike up a conversation with the buyer and see if he would consider parting with it. He responded to my initial inquiries, but when I popped the question if it was available he suddenly stopped writing. Oh well.

Lo and behold an almost identical card shows up last week....

Sweet Patch

The same bidder, same result......I was a little perturbed, but figured maybe something happened and he never got the first one, or he got it and it ended up damaged I never even got a bid in because the bidding got up over my snipe amount. No worries, a similar one was on eBay at the same time. I set my snipe again....

.....and lost again

I'm beginning to wonder if this guy has any intention of letting these past him. He's really skewing the market on the premium patches for sure. Anybody else have any eBay nemesis' that they contend with on a regular basis?

That's frustrating... especially cards with sweet patches like that!

I had (key word "had") two nemeses... choppinbroccoli (Chad) was one for King Richard stuff, but we've since become friends and have traded several nice cards to each other for our PCs... and wreckintheneck (Scott) was one for SPx stuff, but we've also come to know each other over email and talked a couple times on the phone... a really nice guy. I've helped him with a couple cards too.

Other than that... my only nemesis seems to be myself missing setting snipes! Damn that's frustrating... :(

I can only imagine how frustrating that would be Rob. Theres one person who seems to bid on all the same Dubnyk stuff as I. Normally I win, but if for some reason I'm not around when the auction ends, I put in my max bid before I go to work or whatever. 9 time out of 10 I come home to see they've outbid me. I have a suspicion it's someone on the other site, but don't know for certain. They also seem to bid way too much for show stamped cards.

I usually make it a point to try and strike up a conversation with the other Tanguay collectors, since as you alluded to, you can sometimes help each other out. First there was Ross (stuffedhummingbird) who has since dropped out of the hobby, then there was Keiji (kuroinu1) who has prolly also gone up against some Zetty collectors on here. There was also Rob (who is/was a member on here....his eBay ID was sf49erscoloradoavalanche), and TanguayCards (his name escapes me at the moment). The only one who has really rebuffed any conversation is this guy. Who knows, maybe he'll come around.....I hope so. I'd really like to land one of these Stallion patches...

I hope you'll forgive the observation, but it seemeth me you're getting...thrifty at the wrong time. If you want the patch - particularly those ones - snipe hard. You were clearly willing to go higher on the first one - so why go so much lower on the second one?

That's really frustrating... I've had also an enemy, back then when I collected Martin Gerber.
There was one guy on Ebay who always outbid me... He also bought 3 copies of the same card. It was really hard to get the limited stuff... So I decided to ask him, why he always gets these cards. He told me that he was doing that for Martin Gerber itself!

Sorry for my bad english, but Gerber collects himself too (yeah that's right!). No wonder I haven't a chance to outbid him...

Because I have bigger fish to fry at the moment ;) I believe we discussed a variation of this theme the other day, did we not? LOL

And actually when I lost out on the very first one way back when, I spent my money elsewhere....I think your son crapped in some of it a couple of weeks ago....LOL :D.

I am hoping that one more shows up, say about 2 months from now. Then I'll win it, come hell or high water....

Yes, there is a small group of Jagr collectors who tend to be at the top of the list for money spent. However, there is one in particular from Japan that has beat me on several things. I can deal with losing on patches, but luckily my "whale" cards are older ones in a Pens uni. I think the other bidder is mainly interested in Rangers cards. Lucky me.

Rob tough luck man, I am not sure what is the other card your trying to pick up but the odds of such an amazing patch popping up twice is difficult let alone now a 3rd. I would have went harder at #2 then you did for #1 just to either lock it up finally or make him pay out the you know what for his "spare". Fighting the Jagr collectors for the high end stuff is the 1 thing I do not miss that is for sure, I remember there were times where I would snipe 3-4x the ending price of a Jagr card I wanted and was pleasantly surprised then a couple days later I would assume I was doing the same routine and I would come up 2nd on the bid list, I guess it depends who is crazier that day :D

I think the common denominator is most of the players mentioned do not have a huge hobby following. So this will lead you to possibly see the same few names rather than one of the hundreds who collect Gretzky or Lemieux. I do see a few as I invest in bigger lots but the good thing for me is there will always be another lot. For a limited card such as the Tanguay, the supply could dry up.

Yep. I see the same 2-3 names for Morrow stuff every time I bid on things (hi Morpheus! I see you!). It gets annoying, but with limited or high end stuff, you just have to be willing to outbid them.

At least with those guys, though, I know they're collectors who want that piece because they care about the card, not someone picking it up for resale. I also know their bidding habits, so I can guess if they'll come in with their max bid early, will nibble bid or like to jump in and snipe at the end. It makes the auction a little more predictable.

I find it much more annoying to bid on multi-player cards where I don't know the other bidders involved. Leads to a lot more losses.

i think i'm fortunate enough that there aren't too many bigger lundqvist collectors to compete with. there are a few regulars but even then, i'm perfectly fine with another collector winning rather than a dealer. as for multiples, unless i'm upgrading, i generally don't go after more than 1 and leave the next card to someone else.

it's also very fortunate that the lundqvist collectors on here and beckett seem to be the next coming of another gaborik-type mafia. i trade and talk with a few of them consistently and (not counting very high end cards) try not to bid on items i know they are bidding on.

i know i'm debating moving some stuff in the coming months and they will all have first crack at it. i'd rather move something a little cheaper to a fellow lundy collector than get more from a dealer.

An update to this story....guess who sent me a message today? LOL

Maybe this could work out in my favor?? We'll wait and see. He didn't mention any of the Limited Logos, but he did have a couple of questions for me about Tanguay cards....
