I grew up a child of '70s, turning six in '1970. Thus, my collecting of baseball cards started in '72, increased in '73, and hit a peak which was maintained from '74 thru '79. Like so many others, I got rid of my cards in young adulthood, keeping only my favorite team collections of the A's (live in CA in early '70s) and Cowboys. Over the years, I have added to those, branched to other things, and started to rebuild those sets of the '70s which I had as a kid and am very close to finishing the '76 set (my second favorite set from those years). It's fun, though a very long term task for me.
As I have gotten older, like many, nostalgia seems to have set in a bit, recently giving birth to an idea for a project that will be expensive, but extremely satisfying. I want to purchase at some point an unopened box of 1974 Topps baseball, probably my favorite set from those years, and open those fresh packs as I did when a kid. Of course, this time each will be carefully handled and kept in its "pack fresh" condition. This should yield hopefully somewhere near half of the set. From that point on, I will add to the set, but only from unopened packs or boxes. Each card will be my own pull, no secondary acquisitions, just like the old days. Off center, print dots, and all. This will take me beyond simply checking off numbers from a list. Of course, I may never finish the set, just like it was as a kid, as buying new packs will become cost prohibitive with the small odds of pulling cards I still "need."
I'm getting old and crazy, but for some reason I find this an interesting approach for just one of those sets. For the others sets from those years, good old wantlists and trading will work just fine. But '74 will be special, and hey, wasn't it pretty special being a ten year old out of school in the summer back in the day.
