In the past year there has been two incidents of massive flooding and destruction in two major hockey markets. The two events I think of are Hurricane Sandy in the NY/NJ areas and the flooding in Calgary. I am not trying to reduce the severity these events had on the people in these areas, many lives are effected and suffer from ongoing impacts.
The two effects on the hobby that I can immediately see are:
1) collectors leaving the hobby
2) loss of the cards in collections that end up below water
1) Some people even if they have home insurance will not get re-reimbursed for collections. Plus they need to refocus money towards rebuilding rather than a hobby. businesses - card shops - loosing whole inventories may cause closure.
2)the cards themselves- rookies, high graded cards, ultra low printruns, 1/1.
I was thinking of this watch the feature about the flames getting the Saddledome cleaned up for the season. They showed the team photos, jerseys and other stuff that was trashed and couldn't be replaced.
