Near paypal disaster...

Well, I am on vacation right now but this is a big enough issue that I figured I'd post it.

Somehow someone got ahold of my paypal password and used my account to try to buy a $600 item on eBay. The seller thankfully realized it was an unauthorized payment (because the guy sent him a message with an address in London, UK to send the item to) and refunded the money back into my account. So I think in the end I will not lose anything. I have also changed my paypal password and security questions and filed an unauthorized use of my account claim with paypal. Does anyone know of anything else I should do?

No word from eBay. It's more of a paypal issue since the guy only accessed my paypal account and not my eBay account. Paypal should be getting back to me "within 10 days" about the unauthorized use of my account claim. When I get home I will be putting some calls in.

Did you respond to one of those "Update your info" emails?? Theyre usually a scam.

I had someone hack my ebay and paypal account once. The guy bought 13 laptops. I almost passed out when I saw the email receipts in my outlook.

I got everything back, but couldn't track the guy to press charges, he was also in the UK. (around three years ago)

I canceled everything as I was freakin out lol.

Nope, I never respond to anything fishy. I always go through my account to do anything or make changes. I don't know how he got my password though. It's not easily hackable (and its even harder to hack it now that I changed it). Maybe a keystroke tracking virus? I don't know.
 
I don't know about now of days but about 5 years ago I Hacked into paypal when I was 18. Just to see if I could never did any damage to anyones account but I did have a list of 500 peoples account emails/passwords. I am sure they have updated it sense then but it was pretty simple before
 
Something else worth noting - Russian name. I'm not painting ALL Russians as evil gits BUT there are a lot of Russians among the Evil Computer Git community. Just pointing it out as interesting.

Interesting. I didn't think about the hack being on their end. That is a definite possibility, and it would at least be semi-solved with me changing my password (unless the hack hasn't been detected and they get all the updates of people changing their passwords, oy).

You can explain that someone living at the above address used your PayPal account without your consent. Also, remember that we're 7 hours behind you, time-wise. When I posted this it was 12:08PM for me!

Keep in mind, the damage could be worse. If they had access to your account, that means they had access to your bank account number and credit card number. You need to be keeping a tight watch on those, if not cancelling them and having new accounts issued.

I think in the end what we all need to do is only drink pure grain alcohol and avoid flouridization. ;)

That's what struck me too - maybe Vic can help us on this case? :dance:
 
When I get home on Tuesday I will put a call in to paypal and the guys police dept. and see what happens. As of right now the $ is still being held by paypal until it clears leaving my checking account. After it does that I believe I will be able to put it all back in.

From what i have read up on the scammers is that the Nigerian scammers often use the UK as shipping point. Once it arrives at a destination there, they have it shipped to them in nigeria, by contacting the company shipping it and having the destination changed, or having their contact in the UK accept it and then ship it to them.

I ignore the security questions and just mash the keyboard. If I forget my password its my own fault.
With enough time (scammers have all the time in the world), they can figure out the answer.
Favourite color, City of birth, anything like that is useless, and easy to find.

As for paypal, I would say empty out all your funds from there directly into your bank account. Also, keep an eye on your bank account because they may have had access to your bank account number and any other account number that is on there. I
have also read stories where something like this has happened to other people. Because their paypal account was involved in this sort of activity, any big purchases you make with paypal, may be put on hold untill they investigate it to make sure it is a legit purchase. Could take weeks untill they finish it too. Also anyone that has dealt with you on paypal, their account, including yours could be put on hold untill they finish investigating it. I had mine put on hold for a bit because someone that bought something off of me a year before, their account was taken over by a scammer. For some reaon paypal felt the need to put my account on hold. I had less then $5 in there, so it didnt bother me.
 
FYI be sure to do a complete virus and spyware check on any computer you access paypal and ebay on. This happened a while ago to me when the wife managed to get the ole laptop infected (not blaming her, its surprisingly easy to get something like this onto your PC). It was a keytracker that sent out username/password info.

Mine was a little worse as they managed to hack my ebay, and hotmail account at the same time.

Thankfully I hadn't logged into my paypal account in a while so it ended up being safe. They still went ahead and purchased a ton of stuff on my ebay account (mostly buy it nows), from everything to razors, to violins....

They then sent out fake spoofed paypal notices through my email stating that payment had been made hoping the people would just send out the goods without verifying their paypal account.

Took a while to get everything recovered back to me (especially the email as they are smart enough to go in and change all backup passwords in the email as well as personal info so that you can't auto-recover it).


Not saying this has happened here but works as a good reminder to be careful with your own PC (scan often), and as well be extremely careful accessing ebay or paypal with public shared computers (hotels, universitys, etc..) as its much easier for someone to throw a key logged onto one of those computers than your home PC...
