Need an opinion on this Cup card!

I just received this 09-10 The Cup Iginla Backlund Dual Signature Patch card in the mail today, and I noticed a strange yellow area around the Iginla patch window. Has anyone ever seen this before? Or does anyone known why it might look this way?
I also noticed the swatch is placed pretty crooked, my intital thought was a possible repatch job gone wrong, but it's not a very exciting patch. So I don't think that was the case...

There might have been a nice juicy 4 Clr 4 break patch in there that someone thought would look better in another card? I dunno about the discoloured part though, maybe they used something to melt the glue?
Or not.

That's an interesting thought. I was trying to research the patch, and the only thing I can come up with, is it being possibly taken from the bottom corners of the horse logo?

I've seen a couple other cards that are the same as this one and they both have patches that come from the black horse logo jersey

Looks like a print defect to me, the yellow around the window matches the cream yellow on the top border. Also, why would anyone take the effort to swap in that patch, in a card with Backlund. Does not compute.
 
the patch doesnt fill the hole completely, looks like it has moved
I can see white behind the black in the bottom right corner
maybe the stain is glue from UD that got hot/melted thus allowing the jersey to move in the window?
far fetched I know but that or its fake...
 
Id say a very bad patch swap attempt by someone, perhaps getting glue residue on the card. Try some experimenting. Take a similar cheaper card that you don't mine wrecking and put some crazy glue on it and see if it does the same thing. Who was the online seller?
 
Thanks for the input and thoughts everyone. I really hope it's just a mistake UD made, I think I might see if I can experiment with other cards a bit. I guess it would help if I knew the actual process. The sellers eBay name is gustave514. I just asked him if he could tell me the name of the dealer in Montreal that sold him the card and he says that he won't give me that info, and he would rather just have me return the card and get a refund. Makes it a bit suspicious if I can't get that info. Personally I would be happy to keep it if I could confirm it was a screw up on UD's part and not a repatch...
 


Jayden, I have an extra one that we could work into a trade if you want to return that one for a refund. Don't see any yellow on mine.

Yeah very suspicious that he won't give out the sellers name. Seems like he's colluding with the seller. I'd get the refund and not do business with him again. But good luck either way.
 
Thanks Al. I will let you know what happens, good chance I'll be interested in it. I'm just waiting to hear back from the seller and now he seems to have stopped responding to me. I messaged UD as well, and this was their response:

Looking into this picture, there is a number of reasons that something like this could occur either with the production of the card, how the card was handled after being pulled, or how the card was stored after being pulled. Unfortunately we would not have too much information we would be able to provide due to the large array of variables that could lead to this discoloring on this card. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

My guess is that it's some kind of glue residue that somehow either got on the top layer or soaked through from the bottom. It makes no sense that it was tampered with because the patch is still plain, and if it was tampered there'd be actual damage (bends/cuts/wrinkles) to the cardboard.

As for the patch not fitting correctly... I've had plenty of cards where if you held it to an angle you could see the inside of the card behind the patch (patches are not all cut perfect and nor do they ever fit perfect).
 
Thanks for the input Burner. I ended up finding out more info on worthpoint.com, I found out the same card sold in February 2014 and March 2011 as well. The card looked the same as it does now in both listings. 09-10 The Cup was released in August of 2010, so that gives only a 7 month window of possible tampering with the card. I feel much better about those odds, than 7 years. Also, there's more similar looking patches from that card when I did the search. That helps the legitimacy as well. Here's the link to the history:

Is it safe for me to just put it to rest now that it was a production screw up?
